Belles Frank Yost T. C. Smith Eli McHenry William B. Fritz Thomas Cole The Board of Education is composed of capable and efficient men from the community who are active in the management of our school. This year they have made plans for the construction of a gymnasium which will be the greatest improvement to our school plant in a number of years. On account of an increase in enrollment the Board of Edu- cation found it necessary to add a new teacher to our permanent faculty, also they have secured a certified physical education instructor. We want to extend our appreciation for the Work done by Mr. E. E. Shultz, who retired from the Board last December. The Senior Class wishes to express its gratitude for the educational opportunities these men have made possible in our community. Page 10 L. RAY APPLEMAN Principal School is one of the commonest of all common experiences. When the word school is used, it is understood from a background of rich experiences rather than from a well-phrased dictionary definition, and this understanding is lighted by vivid and colorful memories. What are these colorful and vivid memories? Schools are established and maintained for training us in certain knowledges, skills and attitudes that society deems necessary. It would seem to follow then that the memories would be mostly of the knowl- edges in history and geography, skills in writing and arithmetic, and the attitudes of honesty, fair play and such. But they are not of these things. Instead they are memories of the people with whom we worked and played, of the things they did and said, both the foolish and the wise. This year book is an effort to gather as many as possible of these delightful incidents and to print and bind them into a book for your pleasure and satisfaction. The staff has worked long and faithfully at their task and hope this book may continue to give you pleasant hours in increasing measure throughout the years. Page 12 1 l 1 CLASSES Jin Qlbzmoriam gr is with a feeling of deepest regret that we record the death of Carl Elmer Diltz, on April 9, 19 37. As a member of our class, he was a line student, popular boy, and true friend. His associates are all richer for having known him. CLASS HISTORY All the world's a stage And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrancesg And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. -Shakespeare. QQL- h . ! . P, . . . . I lg ts ction Curtain. commanded Directoress Miss Crist, and the curtain s ow- ly rose on the first act of the four-act play, School Days, presented by the fifty-six members of the class of '38. In the opening scene, we were initiated by the Sophomores. During this scene, ten of our members were seized with stage fright, and made uncalled- for exits, never to be seen again. Two other scenes depicted the Sophomore Return Party and the All-School Party. With much prompting from our Directoress, we wor- ried through the first act, presenting as the final scene the Freshman Picnic, and the cur- tain dropped for a three months' intermission until the second act. In September, '35, the warning buzzer notified us that act two was ready to begin, and we rushed to our places as the curtain rose. We found that during intermission our Directoress had been replaced by Mr. Smith, with an assistant, Miss Steigerwalt. Mr. Smith soon felt the urge to go with a larger company and left us under the direction of Miss Steigerwalt. With the experience of a year behind us, we felt capable of initiating the Freshmen, which was done with much gusto in the first scene. In the second semester, the directorship was again changed, and this time Miss Hartman took command. The second act was rather monotonous, and ended abruptly without applause. Mr. Sutliif became the Director of the third act, and gave us a much needed pep-talk just before the curtain rose. We were augmented by troupes from Fishing Creek, Green- wood, and Sugarloaf, who put more life into our acting than we had heretofore shown. Some of the athletes took time out between scenes to play soccer and basketball, while others of the troupe held a refreshment stand at the games, and, although the effort was not appreciated by all, nearly thirty dollars was cleared. Our class play, The Big Frontf' was a howling success, as was the minsrrel, in which many of our troupe par- ticipated. Activities were stopped by the sudden death of Carl Diltz, one of the finest boys our class has ever known, and his passing cast a dark cloud over the remainder of the act. The last scene presented the annual Junior-Senior Prom, followed by a picnic. Act four found us under the able guidance of Mr. Miller, whose untiring efforts pro- duced results well worth working for. Our drama, Little Miss Dreamer, was a great success, due to the capable coaching of Mrs. McHenry. Act four finds us with fifty-six members, which makes the largest class ever to be graduated from Benton High. We aim to be democratic in our activitiesg we cultivate no class distinctions, nor bow to any group of dictators. JAMES M. MCHENRY. Every six Weeks they published the school paper, The Junior Broadcaster. The activities of the year were brought to a close with the Junior-Senior Banquet. Page 26 ACTIVITIES seg H S as Yi so HOME ECONOMICS One phase of the home economics work is the serving of meals. During the Freshman year the girls learn to prepare breakfasts. This includes such things as proper cooking of dried fruits, cereals, and eggs. Special emphasis is placed on the serving of different types of luncheons, buffet suppers, and teas, during the Sophomore year. The Juniors prepare and sell the school lunch to those who wish to buy. The Seniors emphasize meal planning and serving under project work. In this way, the pupils learn to manage and economize in the preparation of foods, which is one of the many objectives of the Home Economics Course. Page 2 8 3 ' 4 AGRICULTURE This year the boys of the Agricultural classes were very successful in their judging contests. The accompanying picture, illustrating a judging team at work, is typical of the practical field activities conducted by the boys in our Agricultural Department. During the F. F. A. week at State College, John McMichael ranked first in poultryg Carlton Fritz was tenth in corng and the poultry team ranked fifth. In considering the total points of all contests, our team ranked sixth. In the judging contests at the Bloomsburg Fair, we came out first in dairying, corn and swineg second in general livestockg fourth in potatoes, and fifth in poultry. The boys were high in total points in all contests. The individual highs were William Davis, general livestock, and Wayne McHenry in dairy judging. Closely related to the Agricultural classes is the F. F. A. organization of which every Agricultural student is a member. Throughout the winter this organization has been very active, being responsible for many well planned meetings, a fine judging team, and the annual poultry show held on February 23 at the school building. Early in the year the following F. F. A. officers were elected: FRANK KILB - - ---- President GORDON FINK - Vice President J. If so, you must have realized how indispensable this organization is to our school. The Benton High School Orchestra was organized in nineteen hundred and twenty- seven under the direction of Stanley MCI-lenry and has been a credit to the school ever since. lt entertains at all assemblies, Parent Day programs, Commencement exercises, class plays, and other entertainments. The orchestra aims to instil in all members an understanding and liking for good music. All credit for its continued success is due to Miss Gertrude Leddy, our present direc- toress. However, one must appreciate that the soccer competition in our league is especially keen, and that our boys lacked the knowledge and skill which must be developed over a period of time greater than one short training season. The boys showed remarkable improvement during the early part of the season. After losing the first two games to Huntington Mills and Scott Township, they were success- ful in winning the next two from Millville and Orangeville, thus earning a tie with Orangeville for second place position in the northern division of our County League. On a neutral Held at Scott Township, Orangeville defeated us 3-1 and thereby became eligible to enter the championship playoff games for our County League. To next year's soccer team we pledge our sincere support. Page 37 HS First Row, Left to lilgllff-IUEYIIIOINI Fritz, Clarence Grist-0. Prior to the opening of the 1937 baseball season, few were willing to predict more than a mediocre success for the team, since most of the varsity members had been lost through graduation the year before.
