THE BLACK 'AND B ORANGE CLASS I-IISTGRY An undercurrent of excitement pervaded the crowd. Everyone was tense awaiting the send-off. The propeller was wound. Chief Pilot Miss Rice, hopped in and tuned up her motor, and with a whirl of the propeller and a roar of the engine the Freshman Plane took off amid shouts of Goodby and Good luck ! Our plane carried forty passengers. During our trip we made one stop which was for the initiation party given to us by the Sophomores. Six of our pas- sengers on this trip bailed out with their parachutes never to be seen again. Our plane landed in the Sophomore field from which we obtained a new plane and a new pilot, Mr. Smith. Taking on one new passenger we started out with thirty-five. After our experience of one year, we felt we were capable of initiating the Freshmen. Our plane stopped long enough for us to give a Military drill in the High School Minstrel. This year two other passengers bailed out and left us. i Stopping to refuel, we were notified that a larger plane was in readiness because many new passengers were joining us. This was to be our lunior Plane with a new pilot, Mr. Sutliff. Gaining sixteen passengers from Fishing Creek Township, two from Greenwood Township, and seven from Sugarloaf Township, we started out again with fifty-eight. Some of our athletes stopped long enough to participate in Basketball and Soccer. Our Drama, Be Your- self was a success. Our class rings were purchased during the trip. We had a refreshment stand at the school games and earned thirty dollars which was considerably more than other years. Our plane landed for the big formal affair, the Iunior-Senior Banquet, which was sponsored. We lost five more passengers. A Making a forced landing, our plane crashed, but fortunately no one was injured. Obtaining a new one which was our Senior Plane with a new pilot, Mr. Miller, we started the last round of our trip with fifty-three passengers. We were given some-very good advice during our Senior Year by our -pilot. Our Senior Drama, Big Hearted Herbert, was a great success, due to the capable coaching of Mrs. McHenry. Having a class of fifty-three members to graduate makes us the largest class that has been graduated from Benton High. Our four years have been successful through the guidance of all our instructors. We hail no select few as our champions of attainment, we laud no individual as a superior. The class is a community of equals wherein each one excels in some trait or purpose.
