So choose your goal And don’t give in, For a winner never quits And a quitter never wins. Broome ,our principal, began his first year at Benton Heights in 1942. The first grade teachers were Mrs. Baxter Benton and Mrs. Lydia Griffin. Mrs. Griffin retired in 1953. During our first year we had seventy-two members. During our primary and grammar grade years, we had, many teachers. One of the main events during our grammar grades was our trip to Raleigh. Our teachers, Mrs. Mattie B. Cobb and Mrs. Ruby Bivens, and several of our mothers went with us. On this trip we visited many interesting places, including the Planetarium at Chapel Hill, The School for the Blind in Raleigh, and the University of North Carolina. Then came one of the happiest moments of our life. At last we were in high school and changing classes. Our number, then, was sixty-two. Our home room teachers were Mrs. B. B. Craig and Mrs. Everette Hatley. We were happy to have Bruce Bradley from Hamlet and Myra Tucker Poplin from Monroe, North Carolina, to join us. Our student council representatives were Junior Simpson and Pat Monroe. In the tenth grade our home room teachers were Mrs. N. B. Nicholson and Mr. Everette Hatley. We wer happy to have Charles Gordon, Aline Terry, Reba Price Moser, Joyce Shuman Whitaker, Pat Monroe, Frankie Herring and Nancy Hasty to become members of the Beta Club. We had one member of our class, Frankie Herring, to become a member of the Monogram Club. Our student council representatives were Reba Price Moser and Max Hargett. Mrs. Betty Lathan Morgan and Mr. Richard Hamilton were our home room teachers in the eleventh grade. Mrs. B. B. Craig directed our Junior Play, entitled “Aunt Cathie’s Cat,” which went over with a bang. The Juniors gave the Seniors a banquet at the Country Club. The theme was “Oriental Gardens.” The guest speaker was Mrs. Cleo Griggs Horne. Hugh Mac Watkins, Emmette Brooks, Harry Boone, Charles Gordon, Ronald Helms, Jean Tarlton, Carol Smith, Joyce Shuman Whitaker, and Louise Williams were our new members to the Monogram Club. Two of our members, Jim Long and Junior Simpson, went into the Army during our Junior year. Our student council representatives for the year were Carol Smith and Junior Simpson. We were glad to have Emmette Brooks come to Benton Heights from the Walter Bickett High School, Monroe, N. C. Then came our last year in school. Our home room teacher and sponsor was Mrs. Linda F. Hilton. Our grade mothers were Mrs. Walter Hasty, Mrs. Willie C. Helms, Mrs. Hazel G. Tucker, Mrs. Glenn Tarlton, and Mrs. Harold Smith. Our class officers were Charles Gordon, President; Kenneth. Huneycutt, Vice-President; Louise Williams, Secretary; Harry Boone, Treasurer; Reba Price Moser, Historian; and Bruce Bradley, Reporter. We were happy to have Melvin Graham from Tar Heel High. Kenneth Huneycutt and Charles Gordon went to Boys’ State in the summer of 1954 and reported a very nice and profitable trip. ' , Nancy Hasty was chosen Miss Benton Heights and Aline Terry won the title of Miss Hi-Miss. The student council representatives were Aline Terry and Hugh Mac Watkins. Charles Gordon was President of the student council. A terrible incident that occurred during our Senior Year was the fire that destroyed our building. But we continued our education, using different buildings for our classrooms, hoping to get a new building soon. REBA PRICE MOSER Historian [ 19 ] CLASS PROPHECY After a whirlwind of getting the little “McCauleys” off to school, I sat down almost in a daze and could hardly believe that it was 1965, ten years since I had graduated from high school. I began to wonder if their twelve years in school would be as happy as mine were. Suddenly it seemed as if a cloud had engulfed me and there before me was an image of each classmate. Each began to tell me what each one had derived in life. Harry Boone has succeeded Douglas Edwards as news commentator for C. B. S. Bruce Bradley has just completed his rocket ship and will leave soon for the Moon. Dorothy Broome is a well known consultant on “Teen-Age Love Problems,” she seems to know every angle. Carol Smith has become a lady bull-fighter and has thrilled many people by fighting the most ferocious bulls in North Carolina. Jean Tarlton is working with Candy Jones, the director for Conover Beauty School, in New York. Aline Terry is now living in Brooklyn; she’s still trying to “catch” the catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hugh Mac Watkins has just replaced “Dusty” Rhodes of the New York Giants.
