As little as we thought of it at the time, our teachers and par¬ ents whose care we were in, were guiding us and doing their best to show us the way to suc¬ cess. Our principal, Mr. Oscar W. Broome, who has a very important job and a great responsibility, has always en¬ deavored to plan an educational program and activities as well, that will be most beneficial to us now and in later life. This is the final year in our high school education and as we look back in years past in the lower grades, we can see many opportunities that we let slip by, but I think we can proudly say that we have had more achievements than failures, because we would not be at the close of the twelfth year of high school if this were not true. Let’s look back now in the days gone by when out of the past came the Senior Class of ’54. The class had a membership of seventy-one in the beginning. Our most loyal teachers during this period were the following: Mrs. Baxter Benton, Mrs. Lydia Griffin—First Grade; Mrs. Alice Hawthorne, Mrs. Dale Moore—Second Grade; Mrs. Elizabeth Harrell, Mrs. James E. Hogan—Third Grade; Miss Mildred Outen, Mrs. Reba McCollum—Fourth Grade; Mrs. Flay Griffin, Miss Pat Benton—Fifth Grade; Miss Annie Williams, Miss Margaret Love—Sixth Grade; Mrs. Ruby Bivens, Mrs. Nell Correll—Seventh Grade; Mrs. Lane Teeter, Miss Christine Whitley—Eighth Grade. Thus far has completed our primary and grammar grades. FRESHMAN YEAR: Now this being the year of 1949 and our first year of high school we entered the Freshman class with a mem¬ bership of forty-five with Mrs. B. B. Craig as sponsor. As class officers we selected Monte Helms—President; Maurice Baker—Vice President; and Betty Ann McGinnis —Secretary and Treasurer. Our Student Council Rep¬ resentatives were Evelyn Wooten and Bud Mullis. This year proved to be most exciting as we were beginning to learn a little about high school. SOPHOMORE YEAR: We entered the Sophomore year with Mr. Everette Hatley as sponsor. As we began the second year in high school our class was beginning to stand out and partici¬ pate in the activities and various clubs. This year the class elected the following officers: Mau¬ rice Baker—President; Monte Helms—Vice President; and Evelyn Wooten—Secretary and Treasurer. The Student Council Representatives were Coleen Moore and Bill Helms. Monte Helms was also secretary of the Student Council. The Beta Club claimed ten new members out of the class this year with the initiation of Betty Ann Mc¬ Ginnis, Geneva Helms, Jerry Weir, Shirley Craig, Leon- elle Mangum, Shirley Haigler, Monte Helms, Bud Mul¬ lis, Ervin Elms, and David Terry. Mary Lena Graham, who came from Denton, North Carolina, joined the class this year. JUNIOR YEAR: In the eleventh year, Mrs. Linda F. Hilton served as sponsor. We received the following new members this year: Shirley McGinnis and Ruth Neal McClellan from Monroe High School and Ruth Simpson from Fairview High School. Donald Rummage, who had been out of school for three years serving in the United States Navy, came back to join our class this year also. We elected as class officers: Maurice Baker—Presi¬ dent; Jerry Weir—Vice President; Donald Rummage- Secretary; Ruth Neal McClellan—Treasurer; and Geneva Helms—Reporter. Monte Helms was Vice-President of the Student Council and Shirley Craig and Bud Mullis were class representatives. The Beta Club accepted Joanne Helms and Shirley McGinnis. Donald Rummage was reinstated as an active member. We were fortunate in having Reverend A. J. Cox, Pas¬ tor of the First Methodist Church in Monroe, as Guest speaker at the Junior-Senior Banquet in which the Fac¬ ulty, Juniors and Seniors had a wonderful time together. SENIOR YEAR: Again in the final year Mrs. Hilton served as spon¬ sor. The class officers were Bud Mullis—President; Jerry Weir—Vice President; Shirley McGinnis—Secretary; Ruth Simpson — Treasurer; Kay Kerley — Reporter; Geneva Helms—Social Chairman; and Maurice Baker—Historian. Donald Rummage was President of the Student Council with Geneva Helms and Bill Helms serving as class rep¬ resentatives. Helen Laney who came from Prospect High School re¬ ceived a welcome into the class. The class now being thirty-six strong could have never reached the end of its High School journey if it had not been for the most capable leaders that we have had in these twelve years. To Mr. Broome goes our deepest appreciation for his most capable leadership in assisting us during our school life. Now as we go out to face life on our own, some will leave home and some will stay, while others will go to college and continue their education. As we face our tasks from day to day may we face them as a Benton Heights Alumni should.
