I h FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL One of the greatest misconceptions which students have concerning education is the belief that it is free. This belief is surely not true. Educa- tion most certainly is not free. It is very costly. Real education requires the greatest investment on the part of the recipient and society. Let us examine what this investment is. First of all, society is pour- ing billions of dollars into the educational program. This amount is growing each year and is never sufficient. But this is the smallest and least important part of the investment which any real education requires. The most important part is that required from the students. It con- sists of time and effort. Every student who graduates this year has invested at least twelve years of his time. This represents from 15 to 20? of an average life time. Any of you who has acquired real education has also invested a great deal of effort. In fact, your education can be measured more accurately by the amount of effort expended than by your diploma. No education is possible without this work and effort. For you, who have really worked and learned, this investment in education is the best you will ever make. lt will pay dividends as long as you live in terms of material success, personal satisfaction, and service to society. Like all good investors you must re-invest much of your dividends in further education. This will guarantee the safety of the investment you have already made. 1 CC
