One of the reasons for the unexpected good season was the exceptional improve- ment in the hitting department. Tom Garland, Claude Willianis, and Pete Rhodes accounted for a large percentage of the Tigers' success with Tom Garland leading the team in homers with three, in hits with 17. and in batting average with seventeen hits in forty-three times at bat for a .395 average.
