Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1985 volume:

LEARN FROM YESTERDAY A wise man once said that the most tragic mistakes are those we repeat. We start making mistakes soon after we're born. We continue to make mistakes 'till the day we die. But if we are wise, the mistakes become rarer and not as serious as they may have been before. We take the good from our past and continue to utilize it. We sift out the bad, and make safeguards to defend ourselves from making the same mistakes again. In our past is our foundation for our future. We look back to our past days to see what we have done for ourselves. We who have learned from our yesterdays have built a sturdy, unbreakable base to build our lives upon. DEDICATION Mrs. Katie Riggs The strength of a Trojan depends upon the strength of all Trojans. Katie has served Las Animas High School for 30 years and is retiring on this the 30th. The 1985 edition of the LAHS yearbook is dedicated to Katie in honor of those diligent years of service to the students, faculty and community. All those endless hours of hard work have helped make LAHS a place for which to be proud. Katie has been the principal's secretary since 1954-55 when she'started under Mr. E.E. Bruegel. It has become her second home and its inhabitants her kids. Not only has she been school secretary but also teacher, counselor, mother, and friend to any and all who have gotten to know her. Katie has touched the hearts of many and her absence will be felt for years to come in these hallowed halls of LAHS. THIS IS LAHS 1985 3 ADMINISTRATION Above: principal Bill Brookfield. Once the older of the two was a fountain of fire — never stopping. Every day he went out and took advantage of the opportunities awaiting him. He lived for the day, and thus did plan his future out. The younger of the two brothers always delayed before he acted. He never lived for the moment. He tried to painfully plan the path of his life. He ended up losing many valuable opportunities. Unlike his brother, he wasn't prepared for his future when it came. And as the two watched the children play, the older of the two brothers smiled when he remembered how good it felt to play like the children. The younger brother frowned and regretted missing the fun. 25 Officers L To R: President Carla Long, Secretary Judy Hoff- man, First Vice President Mark Gallegos, Second Vice Presi- dent Jennifer McAfee, Treasurer Rodger Hudnall. 1985 Graduates Seniors Not Pictured! Not only were there three (barrel races, but one was with a horse without “wheels . Now, how's that for «peed riding? Then its tote that bale and rope the goat and tie it's legs steadfast. •Howdy pardner. It is a horse and is Dan a Statue or did he just pitch a shoe? One thing's sure, all enjoyed these events. 97 98 As evening came throngs poured into the gymnasium to witness the final ceremonies of the day, and they watched as dancers performed square dance turns, a band did play and singers sang. Part of getting rid of this picture of the future is to put tomorrow into a positive light. We all have the custom — to paint rosy pictures of how we would like to be living several years from now. The difference between people is how they prepare themselves to capture that dream. The only way to make tomorrow the way we'd like it to be is to start earning that dream today. We can't sit back and hope to have all our dreams come to us. Instead, we must first prepare ourselves by hardening our blood with hard work. Then, and only then, can we begin to receive and appreciate the dreams that come true. - Bill Davis 102 CITIZEN’S ===™ UTILITIES Hippo Bakery Specialty Cakes Breads Fresh Baked Daily - Full Selection Of Goodies Come Have Coffee Rolls With Us Supplying The Electricity In Trojan Sports 510 Carson 456-1562 Las Animas Country 320 6 Las Animas ................... 456-1393 C OWB.U n ify B11 le honk Bible Class 9:15 AM Worship 10:30 AM Christ In The Heart Is Heaven On Earth 103 Powell-Kuhns Mortuary “It’s an area where K Ip fine Kawasaki |UQ MOTORCYCLES 8c PRODUCTS SINCE 1965 PETROLEUM PRODUCTS SINCE 1 950 Frank s L.P.
