Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1984 volume:

DEDICATION Charles Morley The 1984 Las Animas High School Yearbook is dedicated to Science Teacher Charles Morley, who passed away June 5, 1984. Since 1969 Mr. Morley had taught math and science at Las Animas High School. He was a dedicated and quiet man who worked hard to teach scientific methods to high school students. He was a tireless worker who volunteered many hours to school activities. 1936-1984 Mr. Morley was born August 9, 1936 in Villegreen, Colo. He was married to Lorna Annell Abbott in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Las Animas Education Association, the Colorado Education Association and the National Education Association. He was pastor of the Parkview Southern Baptist Church. Mr. Morley (far right) is pictured after being chosen Trojan of the Month, an honor recognizing outstanding teachers and students. He was selected with Wes Smith, Connie Cook and Judy Hoffman. Challenge, Ac, Always Success ... The desire to succeed has been the driving force behind man’s existence since his primal birth. Success has always been the nectar and ambrosia that has fed countless dreamers. We are now a new generation of dreamers striving to overcome all difficulties that lead us away from success. We set our goals for life, all hinging upon our being successful in all our endeavors. Yet, true success is not bred by a desire to win its honor. Indeed, in order to first succeed one must first delve into his own soul, for in that vast expanse lies the true meaning of success and failure. A content man will seldom fall prey to greed, and then his own doom. A wise man learns from his mistakes. He then uses his experience throughout his life. This man will be a success. We who are now leaving the halls of education should take a lesson from the wise man and learn from others’ failures as well as our own. A Dragon lives in the world today. His name is Failure. Men and women alike are terrified of this beast, for he goads them onward to their destruction. Failure can be defeated, however, by the weakest of men. He who learns how to symbolize Failure, not the man who fears and tries blindly to avoid the dragon, will always succeed. —Bill Davis 2 Clockwise, from top left: Todd Davidson, Ted Orteea and Leslie Gabehardt ham it up during Santa Fe Trail Day; Kristi Biggers, Tiffany Tull and Celeste Cardenas are winners; Joy Marquez is escorted by Brian Cada during Winter Sports; LA students leave the Knowledge Bowl in Lamar. They had a lot of school spirit anyway, and won most of the pep assemblies. They had a lot to look forward to during the 1983-84 school year, such as the Homecoming bonfire, decorating the goal posts, and building floats. The class of 1987 successfully completed many projects and were looking forward to the next year. More football... 48 The Trojan football team had yet another winning season under the guidance of football coach Jack LaSalle. An excellent offensive line gave quarterback Martin Sauceda and Wes Smith time to pass and opened large holes for the running game. The defensive line also did a good job. As a whole Las Animas had a good season, except against powerhouses Trinidad and Lamar. This was the question that arose last fall, and although the tradition of buttoning was discontinued, the Home- coming Spirit never let up. The spirit was shown as the Trojans battled the Miners in a tough game. Even though the Trojans sacrificed 30 pounds per man, our boys never backed down. Our spirit was also shown in the crowning of Homecoming Queen Lisa Rice. The homecoming dance concluded the memorable day. Trucking around on the dance floor. In December, members grabbed their axes and shovels and headed for the Cedars where they cut Christmas trees and sold them for a money-making project. Their spring fund-raiser was a roller hockey game that pitted local firemen and ministers against FFA members. The FFA won many awards during the year, but the highlight came at the State Convention in Durango where Las Animas claimed three top awards. Michael Vincent earned the state title in extemporaneous speaking and was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the State FFA organiza- tion. Also earning a gold award at state was the parliamentary procedure team composed of Susan Waring, chairman, Calvin Feik, Tina Phillips, Tammy Smith, Roy Davis and Cheri Cook. The team brought the trophy home to Las Animas for the first time in 30 years. Ho ho ho... Albert Phillips gets into the Christmas spirit. Could you hold still David? ECHANGE STUDENTS ...a new country, new lifestyle Luis Lenis of Medellin, Colombia and Claudia Borges of Lisbon. Portugal came to Las Animas full of excitement about experiencing a new culture and lifestyle. They found their new home and host families extremely friendly and became immediately involved in student activities. Luis enjoyed cross country track, a new sport this year, while Claudia became involved in journalism and the Trojan Spirit. In addition to learning about the U.S. culture, the two students enlightened many here about the customs and traditions of their countries. They left happy to return to their own families yet sad to leave so many friends behind. Claudia Vieina Gaues de Lopes Borges...and that's a mouth full!
