Records of all kinds were kept, correspondence sent out, staff evaluations made, curriculum and scheduling discussed and problems re- solved, counseling performed and countless other tasks large and small were carried out. The work at times seemed endless but it got done. Appre- ciation for their work was seldom ex- pressed by most of us but let it be known, we did feel it. One great advantage of a small school such as ours was that it was easy to establish a close relationship between the office staff, students and faculty. Because of that, the school tended to run more smoothly. Losses at key posi- tions due to graduation seemed to support those doubts. Through hard work and great team spirit, our boys surprised everyone by going undefeated during their first 3 hall games. Because of their successes, our boys were way up for La Junta, as they matched them both offen- sively and defensively before falling by 10 points. After such a game a let down often follows as it did against Fountain, and L.A. lost. The Trojans bounced hack as they heat Walsenburg, Rocky Ford, and Abbey. The last game of the season against Lamar was a must win situation for L.A. in order to be in the playoffs. It was not to be as Lamar scored on a controversial play. This ended the season for the Trojans who were praised for their efforts. 1st row: T. Parsons, T. Quintana, J. Miller, J. Ga legos, J. Hopper, T. McGee, B.J. Roberts, A. Gallegos, C. Magana, J. As it turned out, the Trojans girls did not fare so well de- spite gallant efforts on their part. The girls showed flashes of the skills they possessed but not in a consistent manner. Many of the games went to the tie-breaker only to have the oppos- ing team come with the victory. A couple of bright spots emerged from the season, our girls placed 2nd in the volleyball tournament in Granada partway through the season and there were a sufficient number of girls out and gaining experience so that next year’s team may fulfil I the expecta- tions of Las Animas fans and of the girls themselves. „ „ „ 1st row: C. It was held in order to aquaint the Freshmen with the upper classmen and to help them adjust to their new en t iro- men t. The activities for Homecoming included the fol- lowing: Fifties Day, Senior Si- lence Day, Toga Day, Fictional Character Day, and Blue and W hite Day. Sen- ior Silence Day was the during which seniors could not talk to anyone except their teachers and senior classmates. Along with the above, events were held prior to lunch. Examples were a grape eating contest, bottle feeding contest, and other such events. In the bottle feeding contest, the sophomores nursed their way to victory. The theme was “W'e are Trojans, W'e are Proud.” The freshmen emerged victorious in the float competion on Friday, Oct. 10, as they built a peacock on their float to go along with the saying “Proud as a Peacock” which was then tied into the theme. Queen Candidates and Class Representatives were nominated and for the first time, King Candidates were selected. Candidates for queen were Shari Bauhlits, Trudie Davidson, Jill Nicklos, and Lisa Pennock. Class Representa- tives chosen were Patricia Fernandez, Frosh; Joanna Smith, Soph.; Brenda Grasmick, Jr. King Candidates were Ron Barks, Jon Car- denas, Anthony Martinezs and Victor Vial- pando. Jill Nicklos was named Homecoming Queen during halftime ceremonies at Trojan Field. Ron Barks was named Homecoming King at a Volleyball game. At the Homecoming Dance, Jill and Ron were crowned Queen and King. The Homecom- ing Dance, extremely well attended by alumni and students, ended an eventful and happy but tiring week. Disappointedly, it didn’t turn out that way. George Schaffer a state finisher last year injured a shoulder during practice and sat out the season. Other wrestlers fell by the wayside because of injury and other reasons. The team was re- duced to seven members, but they made up for this with determination. Las An- imas managed to win some matches de- spite many forfeits. During the District Tournament, John Gallegos took First and was the sole representative from Las Animas at State. Unfortunately, he was beaten in the first round. Congratulations must be given to our Trojan Wrestlers for their stick-to-iti- veness during a trying year. Sta- cey Davis was sidelined for several games with a back problem; Jamie Jones was out with a knee injury; Xta- linda Denton, Lisa Pennock, and Bar- bara Palomino also suffered injuries during the season. Despite these handicaps the girls maintained a good attutide and were able to stay in several ball games only to falter during the later stages of the games and losing by a deceiving mar- gin. The girls provided many hours of en- tertainment for their loyal fans. Al- though it was a disappointing season; it wasn9t through lack of effort. Toward the end of the season the victories started coming and the girls beat Walsenburg to advance to the sub- districts against Lamar. Gallegos Competitive spirit and hustle is the phrase that best described the Trojan boys basketball team during the year. Coach Terry Witty and his fellow coaches Dave Vigil and Terry McGee drove the boys hard. The team gave a good account of themselves in the first ball game against Springfield as they stayed with a very good team before falling by a small margin. As the season pro- gressed, flashes of the ability shown in the first game showed up from time to time. Despite this fact and the great effort the boys put out, we had a losing season. It must be pointed out however, that the junior varsity enjoyed some success and the freshmen had a tremendous year as they won all of their ball games but one during the season and lost in the finals of their tournament by a few points. The Trojans and the coaches should be praised for all the hard work and a never-say-die attitude they exhibited all year. One can certainly look forward to next year as many members of the var- sity and the freshmen group, LAHS should have a good year in basketball. Coaches Aaberg, McGee, and Sinclair seemed to enjoy the track season this year although there were no home meets be- cause of the condition of the track. This year the District track meet was at Pueblo. This was a very impor- tant meet because this showed who would qualify for state. This resulted in Margie Alvarez, a freshman in track for her first year, qualifying for the 1600 and the 3200 run. She managed to place 9th out of 24 in the 1600. Ma- linda Denton also qualified for the high jump but failed to place. The boys track team was not large in size but was very competitive. Darrell Childers and Roger Hudnall, two freshmen members, showed promise for the next years track team. Because of injuries this year, the boys track team didn V do as well but we’re looking for a successful year in the future. “Gosh, nobody ever talks to me. Las Animas baseball provided many enjoyable and exciting times as the Trojans marched to the Santa Fe League Championship. Pre-season indications didn 7 prom- ise a league champion but surprises were in store for fans. The season started off on a losing note as Trinidad beat us handily. From that point on, the Trojans won eight straight, beating Crowley and sweeping Rocky Ford, Walsenburg and Lamar before losing a close one to Rocky in the second round of games. LA clinched the title against Wal- senburg but lost their last two games to Lamar. In the State Playoffs, the team couldn't overcome a big Monte lead and lost 8 to 5. In 1982, Annual Staff started the year by attending a workshop in Lamar sponsored by Jostens Yearbook Company. The work- shop was very well presented and enjoyed by all of our members. We then proceeded to work enthusiastical- ly on the LAHS annual. As always, the Annual Staff strug- gled to complete the annual by the end of the year, but w ound up working past that time as activities piled up on one another. Finances continued to be a major problem as more money was spent producing the annual than was taken in. In 1982, Annual Staff had a class scheduled during the school day which helped relieve some of the time pres- sure every staff feels each year. For the first time since 1946, a male cheerleader was selected for the squad. Ted Ortega had that distinction and carried out his responsibilities rather well. Although they were nervous for their first pep assembly, they soon worked into the groove and did a fine job cheering the Trojan son. This squad introduced activities to promote sportsmanship between the opposing schools as they invited the opposing cheerleaders to help raise the flag and provided them with soft drinks during half-time, ft was felt that this was a nice gesture and should be continued. Though more work had to be put out, the cheerleaders enjoyed the additional cheering for the girls. The Cheerleaders attended a clinic in Denver to do routines and cheers for the half-time at the Denver Nuggets Basketball game. The Cheerleaders en- joyed it tremendously. They also brought home a number of new cheers and chants. The cheerleaders did a great job cheering on the Trojans throughout the active season, and should be given credit for all the support, spirit, and hard work they put out. In addition to the H concert band consisting of band ■ members only, Mr. LeFebre formed the Jazz band and the pep band. The concert hand performed at three concerts during the year, and were well appreciated for their performances. The Jazz band performed also at three concerts, the Homecoming pep rally, and Santa Fe Trail Day awards cere- mony. They played both rock and country western music. The pep band performed at all home football and bas- ketball games, and at pep assemblies. Their performances added to the atmo- sphere at games and were also very much enjoyed by the fans. Anthony giving his last talk to the mem- bers of the hand. The choir for the year- of 1981-82 performed sev- eral times during the year at Christmas con- certs and Spring con- certs along with the band. The group also attended the music festival in Lamar receiving a “2” as a rating with “1” as the best. The choir started off the year with Mrs. Susan Russell who then moved. Miss Wilkins came to replace Mrs. Russell and has done a good job orga- nizing the choir again. DO RE ME Miss Wilkins directing the choir. 1st row: L. Elder, Mrs. Hoffman, C. This year they performed at the Las Animas Education Association which was very enjoyable. BOE □ ne of the most education- al business classes at LAHS is BOE. ft’s com- posed of all seniors who attend school in the morning and work in the afternoon. A total of two school credits is allowed for the class. This year BOE purchased very nice office chairs. They purchased these chairs with various money making pro- jects among which the biggest money- maker was a gas reffle. They also had bake sales, slaves sales, and sold ads for the back of the sports programs. 1st row: K. Bogner, T. Davidson. C. Medina. 2nd row: L. Carr, D. Cole, S. Camilli, Y. Medina, D. Morlan, V. Being the first year in some time since such a club has been active, the numbers in the club were small; however, they did manage to go on a couple of nice trips with their sponsor. Taos was the destination of one of their travels while Pueblo, a bit closer, was the other. Miss Montoya started teach- ing members of the club Mexican dances and hoped that next year more would join so that a dance group can be formed. Leggy Leslie. LA FAMILIA 1st row: R. Lisa Pennock. welcomed the students, especially the freshmen to school the first day of school. Dr. Conroy, Su- perintendent, also spoke to the student body and wished them a successful year. Bill Boggess, an ex-criminal who was convicted for murder, talked to the stu- dent body about his experiences with drugs and alcohol and how they led him to the wrong way of life. He stressed the importance of education and respect of others and their rights. Max Armstrong, an illusionist and magician put on a magic show. Lisa Pennock and Barb Palomino were given the impossible task of separat- ing three interlocking rings. Elaine Hed- gecoke, scared out of her wits, had her hand locked in a device by Mr. Armstrong who then proceeded to force a blade through her wrist, or so it appeared to the audience. It was a very entertaining pro- gram. Pep assemblies, recognition day and Student Council elections were also scheduled as assemblies. 115 GRADUATION 1982 Graduation night approached much too slowly for some sen- iors and too rapidly for others. Haring spent approximately two full years of their lires in the high school building as students, some had already been making plans for the fu- ture. Other members of the class were prob- ably not sure and possible a bit insecure as to what the future held for them. Most of the seniors probably looked back at the actirities and experiences they shared with a great deal of enjoyment and possibly with some regret about things that were in the past. Another word used often in place of graduation is the word commencement which means “the beginning.’ As with the He buggers? end to any experience there must be a begin- ning to another, and so it was in the case of the LAHSgraduates. They will become more independent and develop their skills through further education as they prepare for their future. Though many of us hated to hare them leave, we wished them success in life. 1The Little Rascals Aren’t I pretty! 116 Take it easy on the hair mom! We finally made it!! A NEW BEGINNING 1st row: K.
