Student Council Student council is the student government organization of L. A.H.S. The council meets to discuss and help solve the problems of L.A .H. S. The biggest issue facing the council during the year was the smoking problem. L.A.H.S. also hosted the League Student Council meeting in December of '75. The anual Sante Fe Trail Day was the major project of the 1975-76 Student Council. A., Future Business Leaders of America, is designed to help Business students improve their skill while in competition. F.B. L.A. attended a District Contest where there were many entrants from the area. There were 19 winners in the District Contest. Many of these winners attended a state contest at the Broadmore in Colorado Springs on April 4,5, and 6. Winners in the State Contest were Fred Marleman, Caroline Auffrey, and Shelly Hale . Five other people received honorable mentions. FFA provides leadership and citizenship training for individuals in High School. This year FFA had many activities. They sponsored the donkey basketball game and slave sale, the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry for their fathers, and judged contests at district and state levels. In the spring the FFA went to Grand Junction for state convention, and had their annual fishing trip after gradua- tion. This year they also helped the community by painting tractors for the local farmers, shocking feed, picking popcorn, building benches for the halls at LAHS, and building the 76 you see on the water tower. The Las Animas Future Farmers of America finished off the year with a Banquet where awards were presented to special people who have achieved good ratings in FFA. Sponsors are: Charles Donkle and student teacher Chris Dixon. 128 129 130 FHA F.H.A., Future Homemakers of America, is an organization centered around the Home Ec classes of the High School. This club is for students who want to broaden their knowledge of homemaking skills. F.H.A. was probably one of the busiest clubs during the 1975-76 school year with their money making and service projects and their competition in several contests. They held carmelled apple and donut sales, a valentine cake raffle, and a bake sale for money making projects. Their service projects included a dinner for the staff members, making valentine cards for the nursing home, and sponsoring the film Sasquatch . The club also held a hayride and cookout, made two floats, held a family supper, and made Easter cards and May Day baskets. The members participated in a chorus and talent show, attended the State F.H.A. Convention, and attended several meetings. They held their annual Christmas and and Spring concerts, and also did a benefit concert to raise money for the hospital. They traveled to Pueblo in November to march in a parade of bands. S. chorus had an active year. The chorus gave several per- formances during the year. They sang for area students, Music Boosters, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Nursing Home and the Lajunta Elks. The chorus was also featured at the High School Christmas Concert, Bent County Hospital Benefit Concert, and Spring Concert and also prepared for the Bi-Centennial con- cert July 4. The chorus attended the Mozart Festival and performed with the Youth Symphony in Pueblo. In the spring they went to contest in Lamar. IRC participated in two events this year. The major event was the Model UN at USC in Pueblo representing South Africa, Mauritania, and Democratic Yemen. IRC also sponsored the selling of Valentines for Valentines Day as a money making project. (Distributive Education) is a program of study at the High School in preparing students for employment. It centers around three activities: classroom, club, and the job. Some of the students went to District and brought home four trophies and one certificate. The people bringing home trophies were: Kathy Miles in Public Speaking, Chester Horber in Retail Case Problems, Diane Stover in Cash Register and Jodi Coleman brought home a certificate. Chester also brought home a trophy for bowling. These students and others went on to state but did not place. They also purchased a new candy machine and had a raffle during Valentine week. At the end of the year the students had an employee-employer dinner in apprecia- tion to their bosses. All in all, D. E. had a very busy and interesting year. These students get a credit for working and also a credit for their classes. Along with getting a credit for working they also get paid. Their activities included a Bi-centennial Bean Bake, a slide show from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on The Heritage of American Art , and an art exhibit of the Students' works. Greg Haws Y-Teens Y-Teens is a girls' service organization of LAHS. New members are accepted at the beginning of each year. Y-Teens began the year by holding a Coke party for interested members. Y-Teens also sponsored the Trojan Get- together before Homecoming. To help make money for the formal, the girls held a bake sale early in December. Y-Teens' major event early in the year was the Y-Teen Formal. This year it was held on the second Saturday in December, and was based on the theme An Old-Fashioned Love Song. GAD's motto is, You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. Some of the projects they have done this year are feeding some of the elderly people in the nursing home, pro- viding companionship to patients at Fort Lyon, and providing big brothers and sisters to the elementary students who desire this type of contact.
