A time to keep silence and a time to speak; A time to break down, A time to build up; om 5 This 1974 Annual Is Dedicated to Kay Riggs She's in the office all day long And is ready to help if things go wrong. Her face is wreathed in smiles; Her voice, in understanding She has a deep abiding love And an open mind that cares She has made our school much happier And all are better for knowing her In the 19 years that she's been here. She's bettered the memories of every year. Since she's done so much more This binding of memories is hers She's made each moment fuller. And every day brighter; And none will forget her, Because we all love her. The group of six LAHS students and their sponsor made a trip that was to be the most memorable ex- perience of their life. It didn't seem possible that it would ever happen to as small a club as ours, but we made it only by the dedication, and determination of our club president. With much more to say but so little space, we would like to dedicate this page to Mrs. Kana Martin Estrada for making our dream come true. With best wishes for her future .... This was a hard fought game, which in reality turned out to be the game that decided the Santa Fe League championship. The Trojans downed a good Raton team 14-7 in their season opener. The big blue then journeyed to the San Luis Valley where they won over Centauri. Next was AAA Harrison who quickly silenced the Trojan dreams of an undefeated season with a 23-0 win. League action started with the Trojan team out fighting a strong Rocky Ford team to a 7-0 victory. Next came the Rye High Thunderbolts who gave the Trojans all they wanted before losing out in the final seconds 19-14. The Trojan eleven finally got a breather in a very easy win over the Fountain Valley Danes 56-0. This led up to the game of the year with the Fowler team for the Santa Fe league title. In one of the finest exhibition of high school football, the Trojans of Las Animas lost a heartbreaker that could have very easily went the other way, with 3 minutes left in the game the big blue moved the ball 53 yards down the field to a first and goal from the Fowler six yard line. But on the first down a fumble occured and the Trojan's brilliant comback ended in sadness. The team finished the season with victories over Crowley and Walsenburg to finish the year successfully but not in the situation that they had worked for all-year long. The team played six in the al I-conference team to tie up the pigskin season. Above: Pixler looks for running room. TROJAN BASKETBALL Hey, what's happening at the other end? The Las Animas Trojan basket- ball had a rough and tough season where four or five contests which ended in close defeats cost the team the real division standings that they could have won. The team played their best ball and put forth a super effort on several occasions. Led by team captain, Oliver Vigil, the team compiled a record of 4-15 and the squad was domi- nated by the up-coming junior roster. The team ended their sea- son in the district or league tournament which was held in Pueblo County's gym. The Las Animas five drew second seeded Fowler and lost to end the season. One bright spot was the build- ing of a stronger team for the next few years and that is of interest to all Trojan supporters. The las Animas junior varsity under the direction of Vern Hale played to a 6-11 record but made an impress- ive showing in their last few contests as they won three of four and finished strongly. The entire squad made a good improvement and finished in fourth place in the league race with a record of 4-8. They finished fourth in the district meet and sent four wrestlers to the state competition. The top wrestler of the year was Phil Montoya as he went to state and recorded a second place finish in the 105 lb. division. The season seemed to go so fast and the team improved greatly as they advanced by leaps and bounds behind the reins of Head Coach Don Brown and Assistant Coach Joe Tanner. Gordon Everson, Greg Montoya, Joe Miller and Phil Montoya qualified for the state competition. They all did an out- standing job at the meet and proved to the people that they could carry the name of Las Animas proudly. It was a good year for the grapplers of 1973-74. The team was defeated by Fowler who advanced to the finals but lost to Valley High 11-2. The team had a losing season as they recorded a record of 8-10 with a Santa Fe League mark of 7-3. That gave the team a second place spot which was shared with the Walsenburg Panthers. The team placed four of their players on the All-Conference team. Those making the top fifteen were: AI De|atorre catcher; Dalton Pixler, centerfield; Jerry Berber, first base and pitcher, and Robert Smith, shortstop and pitcher. The squad as a whole showed much improvement from the begin- ning of the season until its close with a doubleheader with the Rocky Ford Meloneers. The Trojans showed considerable hitting power as they banged out eight home runs along with numerous other extra base hits. Phil Quarrleswho played third base won the batting trophy as he batted over .400. Robert Smith received the most improved player award while Dalton Pixler was voted as the most valuable player. Pixler set a new record for stolen bases in one year. He finished the season with a total of 24 while the old mark was 14. Robert Smith tied the Trojan record for the most doubles with six and he had the best pitching record on the team. All factors considered the year was affected by a few bad breaks and a host of mental mistakes. But the big blue will return. 106 Tom Dean fouls off a strike In the intersquad game, ALL CONFERENCE 108 A Season of Mixed Results Ready and waiting, two sophs. The rabbit with the worst base record. Theteam came away on the short end of the stick with a losing score. But from that point onward the team's outlook was only up and up they did go. First it was winning a meet over Walsenburg, Crowley and Fountain Valley and grabbing sixth in the Florence Invitiational. Then the squad recorded a fourth place finish at the Centennial Relays. Next they won their own invititional before entering the district meet. The thinclads recorded a second place and qualified seven for state. The following weekend in Boulder the team placed eighth behind the strong performance of Hector Gonzalez who won the 100 and placed third in the 220. Ray Pearcey added a third in the 880 and James Lockhart place eighth in the pole vault. It was a very good season for the tracksters. Below: Mike Davy.
