Later we will surely say, These were the best years of our lives! My thanks to my staff and sponsor, Mr. Norm Barden, for the many hours of work they performed. Without them, this annual would not have been possible. MR. E. E. BRUEGEL Editor's Note We dedicate this 1972 Annual to our Princi- pal, Mr. E. E. Bruegel, who’s leadership over the years has been dedicated to the students of Las Animas High School. We wish to sincerely thank him for his years of devotion. Our best wishes go with he and Mrs. Bruegel for a wonderful retirement. Getting in shape. Trojan Football 1971 Las Animas football started out the 1971 season with easy victories over Florence and Holly. The going be- came tougher however as 1971 A A state champs, Salida, knocked off L. A. at a 41-19 clip. The following week the Trojans took it on the chin again as they were defeated by a scrappy Lamar eleven. The Trojans soundly defeated Cheyenne Wells but were defeated by a very active Walsenburg team. The Trojans came on to take care of Rocky Ford, Raton and Fowler in the latter part of the season. This put them in a three way tie for the league championship. The play- off for the state berth was held in La Junta with L.A. and Rocky Ford meeting in the first half. Las Animas was defeated in the first half of the game by a score of 6 to 7 thus ending their state hopes. 42 Starts, starts, and more starts. Going to the boards is the name of the game and the Trojans did an outstanding job on the boards this year. With their more than adequate bench strength, in the form of Gary Shiba, Ken Lingle, Robert Saiz, and Steve Klett, the Trojans posed a tre- mendous threat to any opponent. S3 Get that tip-off. The team dwindled in number, though not in spirit, un- til only twelve wrestlers remained. From an observers standpoint the team seemed to greatly improve as the season progressed. Behind the strong right arm of Ben Gallegos and the hard hitting bats of the Trojans, LA defeated the Rams of Sheridan 11-2 to claim the title. This ended another great season for the Trojans as they fin- ished with a fine 16-2 record. The Las Animas nine opened their sea- son in La Junta, (cont.) Barney gets congratulated for another homer. L.A. had split with Crowley to even their league record. This was to be L. A. 's last defeat as they finished the season with a 14 game winning streak. James B. Wilson Holy Communion 11:10 a.m. THE GOOD EARTH This is the soil, the good earth without which man could not exist. Suppose we woke up tomorrow to find a concrete world. Flowers would wilt, plants would die and famine would sweep the land. God, in His infinitely wise planning, gave us the earth to make use of — to care for. Without this care, the soil and fields become barren. People are not very different. We need three kinds of :are if we are to flourish — physical, mental and spiritual. Unfortunately the last, in many ways the most important, is often most neglected. The spirit is a great part of you! Nurture it by attending the church of your choice. 156 BENT COUNTY MOTOR Sales — Service Parts CHRYSLER CORPORATION Plymouth • Dodge • Chrysler • Imperial 24 Hour Towing Service Come in and see us any time.
