New Events Parachutists from the Air Force Academy jumped into the arena as the rodeo got underway. The second annual pony express ride was won by Randy Rose of Kim. He ran the route from La Junta to Las Animas in 36 minutes and 10 seconds. The Student Council acquired the Walsenburg High School Spanish Dancers for the evenings entertainment after the square dance contest. First place in the square dance competition went to the sophomore class, sec- ond were the seniors, third were the freshmen and fourth were the juniors. Above: Mounted Cavalry from Fort Carson. Trail Day Successful A fast fading Santa Fe Trail Day was restored to most of its old time glory by the student body and their community. Side walk bazaar type booths were added to the program this year. It was held in the down town section of sixth street. The Ranchburger sponsored by the hardworking class of 71 served a crowd of approximatley 750 persons. The only mounted cavalry in the U. S. performed at the rodeo, drawing a full stadium. 28

Santa Fe Trail Day The fifty dollar price for first prize for the over- all class participation also went to the sophomores. The seniors were second, freshmen third and juniors fourth. To end a perfect Santa Fe Trail Day Mr. Gerald C. Bryning was given, on behalf of the stu- dent body, the Special Recognition Award. 30
