Las Animas High School Las Animas, Colorado As the doors close for the school year 1970-1971, we look back trying to remem- ber all that happened during the year. To each person this school year meant some- thing different. To some, it might have meant coming out of their shell and meeting new people, having new experiences, or resolving to meet each day as a new experi- ence. To others it might have been just another year of school”. Whatever it meant to you, we hope that within these pages you will find some memory you had forgotten about this year. Therefore, we are proud to present the '71 TROJAN yearbook with the hope that you will cherish it forever. The part about Homecoming, besides the tremendous football team, was the feeling that belonged to all” who attended L. A. H. S. Everyone had the spirit; all students and faculty worked together to make the 1970-1971 Homecoming a truly wonderful event. - Trojan Get-Together Captain prophecies Trojan Victory. Homecoming Queen Jeriann Wagner Below; Coach LaSalle adds spirit 14 Miss Toni Hale and Miss Susie Anderson Miss Barb Moody Faculty skit featuring The Cat Behind the leadership of Mike W. Montoya, Mike R. Montoya, and David Turner, the powerful Trojan football team and its fans captured a hard-fought victory over the Walsenburg Panthers. The students chose Jeriann Wagner to reign over the cele- bration. Her Senior Attendants were Susie Anderson, Toni Hale, and Barb Moody. Class Representatives were Linda Melchoir (Jr.), Barb Estrada (Soph.), and Lorraine Quintana (Frosh). 15 The cry was beat Walsenburg, beat Walsenburg and Linda Melchoir tells these freshmen to do three more for her. The Freshmen are Edith Southern and Margaret Switzler. Ed Groomer having a good time at the get together. Below: the pom-pom girls march in the parade. Old tradition such as freshman buttoning for the last time mixed with new tradition brought about an exciting Homecoming week. The Seniors brought forth the new traditions in the form of a Sunrise Dance, renewed the old Snake-dance after the bonfire custom and planned a get together after the bonfire. The get together was very much of a success with approximately 300 spirited people attending. Everyone was ready for a Homecoming Victory over Walsenburg!! Trojan Victory Trojan's Can't Be Beat The Victory came to the Las Animas Trojans. A victory shared not only among the foot- ball team, but also belonged to each and every student. All students were joined together at this time by a common spirit. This fantastic School Spirit we feel played an important part in the achievement of a Trojan Victory. The Juniors decorate their float. Below Lyndell and Tim listen attentively as Coach Lasalle speaks of Victory! The Trojan marching bandpasses in review during the Homecoming parade. 17 The members of Y-Teens and their dates enjoyed another lovely Christmas Formal. The girls chose My Christmas Wish as the theme for their dance. The%auditorium was decorated in Christmas colors red, green and silver. Hard work and a lot of urging from President Barb Moody brought about an auditorium finished on time waiting and ready for the big dance. Jerry and Elizabeth have a wonderful time at the Y-teen formal. What happened to the boys? Dave helps himself to the Punch. Winter Sports The Winter Sports celebration got under way with a poster and spirit contest among the four classes. Each class was also required to perform a skit during the Friday Pep Assembly. Competition was keen and school spirit high as each class prepared their skits. The first place skit went to both the junior and senior classes with the junior class placing first in the poster contest. Sherry Hunke was chosen to reign over the winter sports festivities by the student body. Although the celebration was slightly spoiled by the Rocky Ford wrestlers the Trojan basketball team came back the next night to beat La Junta in a very exciting game. The Prom was opened once again to juniors, seniors, and their dates. Evening in Vienna was chosen by the junior class as this year's theme. The decorations for the dance were done in silver and gold with silver stars on blue for the ceiling. Pink Carnations were used as table center pieces and an authentic looking gondola drifted alone in the center of the dance floor. Something must really be interesting. A pretty girl (Linda Melchoir), A nice corsage, A beautiful dress and we're off to the Prom. Below: All had a fantastic time dancing at the beautifully decorated Junior-Senior Prom. Trail Day Successful A fast fading Santa Fe Trail Day was restored to most of its old time glory by the student body and their community. Side walk bazaar type booths were added to the program this year. It was held in the down town section of sixth street. The Ranchburger sponsored by the hardworking class of 71 served a crowd of approximatley 750 persons. The only mounted cavalry in the U. S. performed at the rodeo, drawing a full stadium. 28 New Events Parachutists from the Air Force Academy jumped into the arena as the rodeo got underway. The second annual pony express ride was won by Randy Rose of Kim. He ran the route from La Junta to Las Animas in 36 minutes and 10 seconds. The Student Council acquired the Walsenburg High School Spanish Dancers for the evenings entertainment after the square dance contest. First place in the square dance competition went to the sophomore class, sec- ond were the seniors, third were the freshmen and fourth were the juniors. Above: Mounted Cavalry from Fort Carson. Recognition Day Recognition Day was held May 11, 1971 in the high school gym. On this day many outstanding students were rewarded for the long hours of labor they had con- tributed to the school during the past year. Class offi- cers, office assistants, tutors, club officers, and many other awards too numerous to mention were given at the assembly. This year was a year of breaking with old and setting new tradition. Students listened at- tentively as Mr. Vern Hale presented the coveted A award to not one but two outstanding and deserving senior boys. The boys receiving the A award were Mike Nicklos and Allen Medina. Sherry Hunke was the unanimous choice as the girls' A award recipient. Above: Tutors receive awards. The Seniors of 71 have achieved throughout their four years of high school countless victories; Some individually, some as a group. They stood together, sharing exciting and eventful occasions as they posted mile stone after mile stone, always looking ahead to when they would be 'seniors'. Has Great Season Las Animas, led by the determination, attitude and spirit of the '71 seniors, pounded its way through a rough schedule and ended up its season playing St. Josephs of Denver in the State Semi- finals game. Their season ended at a more than respect- able 9-2 record. They stomped the once proud Fow- ler Grizzlies 48-14. The Big Blue reached their peak with a dramatic closing of regular season play by beat- ing the '69 state champs, at Rocky Ford Nov. 13, 1970, 16-6. This started off the long string of league cham- pionships in the 1970-71 school year. Mike Montoya talks over game strategy with Coach LaSalle Ben Gallegos leads Mike Montoya around end for a valuable gain against Rocky Ford. 82 The Trojans were led all year by such standouts as all conference players Mike W. Montoya (Quarterback), Steve Watts (Guard), Ben Gallegos (End), John Abdulla (Defensive Halfback), and all staters Kim Wagner (Tackle), Tim Eck (Full- back), and Mike Muniz (Guard). Jerry Wilson (Tail- back), Mike Nicklos (Line- backer), and Dave Turner (Tackle) were honorable mention all conference players. There was also a scrappy bunch of defensive football players known as the bandits, who saw a lot of action. The Ban- dits were led by defensive standout Dave Sobeck. Through the combined efforts of all, with fine coaching from head mentor Jack LaSalle-assisted by Quentin Delaney, Larry Barton, and Norman Barden- the Trojans finished with one of the finest seasons Las Animas has seen in a long, long time. The Trojans started off fine by beating nine of their first ten opponents, losing only to Walsh. They had defeated the Walsh Eagles the second game of the season. They soundly defeated the big team from the north, the Center Vikings. In league play they lost only to Crowley County and Fowler. In the final two games of the regular season play they walloped Crowley 75-58 for a shot at the league title. They traveled to Fowler and defeated them 52-47 to tie for the league championship. They then met Fowler in a play-off game to decide which team would host the Southern Peaks cham- pions. L. A. lost to Fowler at Rocky Ford 54-50. The following week the Trojans traveled to Monte Vista to play the Center Vikings. The Vikings proved to be a little too much for the Trojans and defeated them 54-50. Mike Nicklos was named most valuable player of the season, had the best free throw percentage, was captain, and all-conference forward. Other all-conference players were Mike W. JV Team Finishes Third The Trojan Junior Varsity basketball team had an up and down year. They had an eight win and ten loss record on the year. They were in every ball game right down to the final buzzer but they lost several games by a 1 or 2 point margin. One interesting aspect about the fifteen member team was that each member got to start at least one game during the season. Leading the Trojan J. Football, basketball, and then the big one- Baseball The one thing heard throughout the season at Memorial Field or wherever the Trojans played- Push-pull-blue! This season was a little different for the Trojan Baseballers. For the first time in six years they were the underdogs. It was said they had no pitching corps. But it was the strong arm of Ben Gallegos and the stingy relief roles of Mike W. Montoya that carried the team. The league cham- pionship wasn’t decided until the last game the last inning, and the last out of the regular season. This being the game played at home against the Walsenberg Panthers. (corn. pg. 98) Coach Joe Slobko and Coach Carl Spinden ready for the state quarter-finals trip to Grand Junction. Trojan Hitting Leads The Way The Trojan bats once again boomed loudly. They were led throughout the year by big Dave Turner at first base (.408), Tim Eck at third base (. 340), Ben Gallegos pitcher (. 368), and Mike Gallegos at shortstop (. 340). The Trojans offensively were a constant machine on the move. They had 153 hits to the opponents 92. They scored 127 times to the oppositions 68. The Trojans, coached by Joe Slobko, for the fifth consecutive year took the league championship out of the hands of the opposing Santa Fe League members in the final 2 games of the season. The Big Blue played the Wal- senburg Panthers at home and swept both ends of the doubleheader-6-0 and 3-1. The Panthers needed only one game to take the title away from the Trojans. Ben Gallegos shut them out the first game and then came in relief in the second game to help Montoya win his fourth game of the season. ■■HR Coach Slobko discussing ground rules with the officials and the Monte coaches. Trojans To State Playoffs The following week the Trojans advanced to the quarterfinals in L. A. to play the Monte Vista Pi- rates. They defeated the Pirates by a score of 5-1. Ben Gallegos yielded one hit and struck out fifteen batters to raise his season mark to eight wins and two losses. The next stop was at Grand Junction. The Big Blue met the Palisade High School Bulldogs in the state AA semi-finals. Grand Junction again proved to be a jinx for the second straight year. At the end of three innings of play the Trojans were behind 4-0. Doug Ferguson, shortstop for the Bull- dogs, hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning which proved to be the clincher for Palisade. The Trojans staged a fantastic comeback in the top of the seventh inning. Mike Gallegos scored the fourth run with nobody out and Mike Nicklos ad- vanced to third on a stolen base and a sacrifice fly. Nicklos attempted to steal home and was called out at the plate on a close disputed play that ended the season for the Trojans. Below Harry Wilson runs the bases and to the right Dave Turner and Ben Gallegos are on their way. 99 1971 Baseball Record The Trojan baseball team had a very good record during the 1971 sea- son. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . .. ALL FOR THE CHURCH The church is the greatest factor on earth for the building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civiliza- tion can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (l) For his own sake. (2) For his children’s sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily. 139 Sixth and Locust Rev. James B. Wilson Holy Communion 11:10 a.m. FRANK’S L. P.
