llVft 4 Annual King and Queen Gene Rita Ho rak Barreras Each year, as the preparations for the TROJAN get underway, there are a number of selections to make. The selection of a cover, the selection of a theme, the selection of the editor, the selection of the staff and the selection of Annual King and Queen. The titles of Annual King and Queen are given to two Journalism students. Juniors or Seniors, who by various services to the TRO- JAN SPIRIT and the TROJAN have shown that they are worthy of the honor. Their names are submitted by the Journalism sponsor and they are voted on by the Journalism students. The selected students typify the highest standards of Journalism. While Pat Kipper looks on. Dale Kortz receives award for editor. Benjie Rodriquez shows Debbie Penn how a layout is done. Mike Nicklos receives the award for outstanding first year Journalism stu- dent. This year Drama Club produced for the Junior class, The Little Dog Laughed and for the Seniors Bringing Up Mother. To produce these plays Drama Club members spent some ten individual hours, over a period of five weeks, working on sets, putting on make-up, and preparing their parts. Both of these plays were a success and ended another successful year for Drama Club. BARTON 6 PRACTICAL COURSE: FAMILY LIVING 7 FRANK EVAN’S UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN STEVE WATTS -ALL WRAPPED UP IN HIS WORK In the pre-season poll of the Santa Fe AA League coaches, LA was picked no better than third place due to the loss of several important lettermen. Rocky Ford and Fowler were favored to fight for League honors. In the first game of the season, the 1968 Trojan team sounded a warning for the rest of the league by defeating Class AAA Canon City Abbey 20-12. The following week the Trojan team shutout the Holly Wildcats 25-0, and were beginning to raise heads. Traveling to Lewis Palmer they again won a victory by a score of 19-13. When Las Animas trav- eled to Fowler the following week the game had now been rated a toss-up, but the spirited Trojans downed the Grizzlies and grabbed the league lead with a 1-0 record. Riding a three game winning streak, the Trojans faced a hungry AAA Lamar eleven and were beaten 40-6. After the loss, the Trojans met the Rocky Ford Meloneers in what was termed as the League cham- pionship game and the Trojans were again beaten badly 41-12, which seemed to end all title hopes. Trojan Andy Medina breaks into the clear. 108 Tno ans Shane LA defense puts it to a Trinidad ball carrier. Tri-Captains L to R Andy Medina, David Hyatt and Tom Medina. The Trojans came back stronger than ever the following week and defeated the Trinidad Catholic team, 26-0 for a very successful Homecoming victory and were still half a game behind Rocky Ford. In the next to the last game of the season, the Trojans were victorious with a score of 27-13. The same night, Fowler was beaten by Rocky Ford 20-14 and this tied them with LA but gained the assurance of a state berth with a victory over Walsenburg accomplished by a score of 27-6. It looked as if LA would go to state again by virture of the league tie with Fowler and a victory over them. But fate stepped in and a Trinidad Catholic player was ruled ineligible and a three way tie for the League lead and a play-off developed. Las Animas, Rocky Ford, and Fowler were in- volved in the play-off and Las Animas was beaten in the first half by 12-7 and Rocky Ford went on to take the state by beating Fowler 7-0. This year’s out- standing Trojan team finished with a 7-2 record and an outstanding job well done. 109 League Title Andy Medina looks for a hole off-tackle. Pep Club innovations such as the Spirit Stick and Spirit Box, with its variety of surprises, kept spirit high. Students' enthusiasm was reflected in brightly painted banners and in the din of noisemakers. All classes had the honor of winning the Spirit Stick while the sophomores and freshmen were the winners of the Spirit Box the three times it was presented. The Spirit Box's Spirit Jug went to the sophomores and the freshmen ended basketball and wrestling season with its wins of the Spirit Turtle and the BOMB. Despite some internal difficulties. Pep Club had a successful year with spirit reaching an all time high. In hopes of having even more success in years to come, the year was ended with amending of the Constitution and officer and cheerleader elections.
