LAID BY THE M.W. GRAND LODGE OF COLORADO A.F. A.M. JULY JL 1967 Table of Cont ent s Page STUDENT LI F EHiio SPORTS 134 ASSOC I ATED STUDENTS AND F A C U L T YHHHH64 PRO F I L ESI GREG McADAM-EDITOR Change isn't always synonymous with progress, but it's evident that the 1967-68 school year has brought many changes which mean a better future for those who walk these halls and study in these classrooms. The new building created an excitement and a fresh pride in the school few students experienced. Moving over a weekend was an experience the teachers and students will not forgt or wish to relive. New trends in edu- cation, extended offerings in academic areas, and a pleasanter envior- ment are only a few benefits shared by faculty and students because of the new facility. Other changes will affect students at Las Animas. Having a winning football team since “Who can remember when? or seeing our baseball team win a state championship might be a direct result of a league switch from AAA-AA. The manner of selecting queens at LAHS, a long stand- ing tradition was changed to guarantee a senior queen with underclassmen as attendants. These are only three changes in the atmosphere at LAHS. There were others but they need not be mentioned here. The staff members of the 1968 yearbook have spent innumberable hours on this book, hoping to record with dignity one page in the history of our school—one academic year. We hope you find many of your most pleasant memories mirrored in the pages of this—the 1968 TROJAN. Pep Club, one of the largest and most active clubs at Las Animas High School, gave their whole- hearted support by following the var- ious teams wherever they went. They attended the games even though it meant traveling through rain, wind, and snow. The bus trips for the freshmen were something new and exciting while the seniors had become ac- quainted with the procedure. Paint- ing the windows downtown became a weekly project. Pep assemblies had that extra push to give spirit to the student body. Posters were featured as weekly wall paper. Confetti was cut every Friday morning for good luck. All in all this was the main part of Pep Club. As in years past, mum corsages were sold at Homecoming. A float for Homecoming, completed about five minutes before the start of the parade, made it in at the tail end of the parade. During basketball sea- son, Trojan boosters pins were sold. SCHOOL BOARD Proud traditions are the foundation upon which we base many of our fondest memories. Your experience of occupying the new high school this year should be one of great memories with a feeling of satisfaction to one and all. It is hoped that the many fine proud tradi- tions will continue in the new high school. Great efforts have been made and will continue to be made to provide you with all the necessary tools and implements so that you will have the opportunity to receive a good educa- tion. As a Trojan the opportunities presented to you were unlimited. They not only include the formal academic pursuits in the classroom, but also the activities, the athletic program, the recreational features, the hall- ways, the coke machine, and the office, just to mention 66 APPROVES NEW BU a few. Each part must have a favorable imprint upon your life, and it is hoped the sum total of these experi- ences will be of such a nature that you will be an asset to society. Mrs. Vera Summer, regular P. E. teacher, was not able to teach the entire 67-68 school year be- cause of injuries to her leg. Mrs. Shirley Quarrels filled the vacancy. Eighteen of these years were in the Las Animas system. Mrs. Wade taught five years at McClave and eight years in other states. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Mrs. Wade, re- ceived her B. A. and her M. She has also attended many other schools during her career; including University of Colorado, Mexico City College, University of London, University of San Fran- cisco, and in 1963, Colorado State College. While she taught at LAHS, Mrs. Wade was active as a club sponsor in the student's extra- curricular activities. She sponsored Y-Teens for 14 years; Latin Club for 15 years; Spanish Club for 13 years. Mrs. Wade, the yearbook staff of 1968 wishes you a pleasant and fruitful retirement and thank you for the many years of service to Las Animas High School. The movement was spurred by the idea that buttoning was “utterly ridiculous.” Following the pretest movement, freshmen again surprised fellow LAHSers when their candidate, Mary Logan, was crowned Homecoming Queen. To round out the year, the class of seventy-one faced the problem of moving to a new school. The Sophomores entered their second year in L AHS with a new sense of security and be- longing. Along with all other students they greatly looked forward to their semester in the new school yet felt a sense of nostalgia at leaving many mem- ories in the old building. The second semester of school was almost like being freshmen again to the sophomores — wandering through unfamiliar halls into the wrong classrooms. Yet after a few weeks, all seemed normal, and the school days sped on. The class of ’70 moved through the school year with a series of money-making pro- jects. Pop bottle raids, car washes, and helping the juniors with the Ranchburger Dinner on Santa Fe Trail Day set the class on their way to their jun- ior year. I wondered why It left familiar things behind. A hand caught mine... I paid no mind. The stranger never once did say Just what had brought him on my way. On we went, and some afraid I wished I hadn't come, but stayed. All the friends that I once knew Took a road named Goodbye too. There were no two roads just the same Though all were called Goodbye by name. The road went on; we went on too, And I was sad, for then I knew That never could I be the same Having walked down Goodbye Land. And though I couldn't understand We walked together hand in hand. We said no words, but just walked on, I thought of things now past and gone. I thought of games Ed lost and won, 1 thought of all the things I’d done, I thought of those I loved and cared. Of times we’d had, of things we'd shared. 1 thought of those I’d come to know. Just knowing them —they’d helped me so. I thought of things, of tears I'd shed ... Those same things now brought smiles instead. The tasks I'd done, those left to do, 1 wondered how I’d make it through When something inside seems to say, The best you can from day to day. The way was rough; 1 knew the score, It never ends ... there’s always more. But now I know that all in all Each thing in its won place will fall. I thought of all the happy days, The sad ones now just seemed a haze, And in a flash I came to see How much the past had meant to me. We walked along—I wondered where The future led and what was there. The past still echoed from behind I was its, and it was mine. But in my heart was still a fear. And in my eye a shining tear; Yet on my face there was a smile, And we walked forward all the while I walked along the road Goodbye. I looked back once ... I heaved a sigh Then I remembered at my side — My silent, but my constant guide. The stranger's hand 1 felt in mine. I looked into his face this time. I asked his name —he turned just so. He smiled and said, “I’m called Hello.” llj HIS IS NOT THE END IT IS NOT EVEN THE BEGINNING OF THE END.
