Now, after many years, a new L.A.H.S. is to be constructed. The class of ’67, this year’s Juniors, will be the last to be graduated from the present school. Since its construction in 1914, many students have passed through its halls, and each one has left his own impression. The walls harbor many memories which will never be forgotten. The newly constructed school will be a place for students to grow in mind, body, and spirit. Here, many new memories will be made, new achievements recorded, and new ideas in education will be developed. Although the school and students have changed through the years, the ideals and goals have not. We must set these goals carefully and then strive to attain them. In order to make our dreams become reality, we must work. Our quest to fulfill these dreams will be difficult, but not impossible. Maturity and flexibility are the primary elements which will determine our success or failure. The world is ever-changing, and in order to succeed we must have the maturity to face it, without qualms, and the flexi- bility to change with it. If we hesitate or become complacent, our dreams will shatter. In closing, we challenge each of you to excel through vision, enlightenment and understanding. As you look back through the pages of the '66 Trojan, may you recognize the significance of a wonderful year. If you students are pleased by this record of your achievements and disappointments, then all our endeavors shall be rewarded. Editor 1966 Trojan -4- DEDfCATTON MBS- SAUJE BRVNIN We have dedicated our yearbook to a woman who is herself dedicated. Mrs. Bryning has been a friend to all her students and has tried to help and understand them, overlooking all the carelessness, forgetfulness, and in- consideration often shown by them. As sponsor of the yearbook she has spent many hours doing the work that the editor and staff “just didn’t seem to get done”. She is the one who has built up confidence on the staff and has encouraged the members to do their best—she has kept us going. With all our admiration, we dedicate this yearbook to you, our Mrs. B.” -5- Mrs. Bryning, in her familiar stance, talks with her class. AD UfMCTRATTON The new Las Animas High School will contain 21 classrooms and li- brary-study hall, gymnasium with a seating capacity of 1000 and a cafe- teria that can be used as an auditor- ium. The junior high will move into the present high school. Left to right: Richard Jorgenson, Wayne Bender, Willard Wight, Harry Allen, Jack Taliaferro, Mack Smith, and Roy Cooper. UORLEY SITE WILL BE LOCATION Superintendent of Schools, HARRY ALLEN ’G S'G G On May 24th the voters of Las Animas School Dis- trict No. Re-1 passed the bond issue for a new high school after two previous bond issues had been voted down. Voters also selected the controversial Morley site as their choice of location. Much credit is due the School Improvement Associa- tion formed after the second issue failed to pass. About 50 high school students held a VOTE FOR A NEW SCHOOL rally downtown a few days before the elec- tion. They, as much as anyone else, were aware of the need for new facilities. Among their many activities during' the school term, the seniors took first place on their Homecoming float. Many senior boys excelled in athletics during the past year. There was at least one out- standing senior in every sport. The senior class has done much to keep Las Animas High School “active and alive.” You’ll really be missed, seniors! HELEN WADE, Sponsor Y-TEENS, one of the largest and most active clubs at Las Animas High School, sponsors many yearly activities. This year’s activities included a foreign bake sale netting $30.00 and a Christmas fruit cake sale netting $130.00. Over half of LAHS's feminine sex belong to Y-Teens, and it takes that many to make the Y-Teen Formal the success it was this last year. December 18th was the big night; Crys- tal Moment was the theme. Tinsel snow flakes drifted below a blue and silver false ceiling. The stage was a winter dream cast in white surrounding a frozen pond. Becky Show alter reigned over this winter scene as 1966 Y-Teen Queen. Another big event for Y-Teens was the annual Talent Show held in April at Memorial School. Thirteen varied numbers were presented by high school students ranging from vocal solos to baton twirling to non-competitive en- tertainment by The Group. Many students felt that the 1966 Talent Show was the best ever.” Seventy-five dol- lars and forty cents was netted from door receipts. Besides preparing two food baskets for needy families and sending money each month to help support an over- seas orphan, these girls had time to organize a Spring Tea for their mothers. At this meeting the new officers were installed: President, Mary Ellen Montoya; Vice-President, Jean Atoman; Secretary, Carolyn Montoya; Treas- urer, Barbara Greve. As Charley's aunt then, this old frump is introduced to the sweethearts, to Jack’s father, and to Stephen Spettigue. The sweethearts hug and kiss Charley's aunt; the two men make love to her. Then the real aunt turns up. In the confusion Lord Babberly tricks Stephen Spettigue into agreeing to the marriage of his ward to Charley, the real aunt marries Jack's father. The house is haunted one night a year by a witch who appears exactly at midnight on November 22nd. The new owners decide to hold a party for the witch that night. The guests include a local doctor and his mother, a relative from Hollywood, a reporter and the maid. The schizophrenic witch makes her appearance and announces that she is going to scare them all out of the house. Her efforts are to no avail because the guests are too interested in the occult to be frightened by it. The witch says she will break up the marriage of the owners as well as the blossoming romance between the doctor and the relative from California if the owners and guests do not move out of the house immediately. She does manage to cause enough trouble to bring about an agreement to move. How- ever, then the Latin words which will destroy the curse on the witch and let her have peace are repeated, the witch disappears, they live happily ever after. Janet and Joe give the audience a laugh as they share the couch. But the sound of laughter, the shuffle of feet, the clat- ter of locker doors and the screech of cars leaving the parking lot cannot entirely fade away. The memories remain in the building The 1966 TROJAN is the reconstruction of the past school year-- the laughter, the disappointments, the special achievements.
