School BESS HAGGARD, Business Manager Pictured above - Richard Jorgenson, Harry Allen, Superintendent, Roy Cooper, Ed The 1964-65 school term was marked by much activity concerning the educational program and the building needs to appropriately house this program. The instructional program needs were thoroughly outlined early in the year by the teaching staff after a citizens committee had submitted recommendations for the curriculum. For evaluation of the buildings, the district employed an architect. Through the architect, complete engineering surveys were conducted which gave detailed status reports of the structural, electrical and mechanical conditions of the buildings. Working in cooperation with the architect, the Board of Directors developed a building plan which was designed to meet the most pressing needs of the instructional program. The plan which was adopted by the Board for referral to the electorate pro- vided for the construction of a new high school building. This proposal was submitted to the electorate of the school dis- trict in a bond proposal on February 23, 1965. The proposal failed to receive ratification by the electorate; therefore, a complete re-study and the structuring of a new proposal was indicated. A regular biennial school election was conducted on the first Tuesday in May, 1965. Three new members were elected to the Board and these new members took office immediately to serve with the three remaining members of the old board. The first major item of business taken under consideration by the newly organized board was the study of the building needs of the school district. It is anticipated that a building plan will be developed and a bond issue proposed to finance the plan during the early part of the 1965-66 school term. -6- CBoarcf Blackburn, Mrs. Noel Kerr, Richard Klett, Dr. W. If any class had the most fun this past year, it must have been the sophomores. By our second year we knew most of the rules and idiosyncrasies of LAHS, and we are yet to experience the trials and tribulations of the homework the juniors and seniors receive. Our sophomore year was made especially memorable when our candidate, Lenda Long, was crowned Homecoming Queen. Accuse any senior of having acted like a freshman once, and he'll deny it to the death. The truth is, however, that all of us went through the bewilderment and befuddlement that the fresh- men experienced this year. They enter LAHS eager to find out what high school is all about, and their infectious eagerness seems to spread through- out the school. The whole year is a time of firsts; first football games where they can really root for the Trojans, first sock hops, first contact with the more mature world of the upperclassmen. Their enthusiasm for anything they undertake is amazing, especially to the tired seniors, who by now would rather watch than work. If we could have a wish for the class of '68 it would be that they always retain the freshness and vigor that they have shown this year. -56- Jd)e;re the hreshmen Rita Apodaca Bob Arguello Molly Atkinson Jean Atoman Hope Avila Mary Helen Avila Audrey Barks Karma Bennett Bob Blackburn Jean Castro Stacy Castro Tommy Catlin Carolyn Coffey Kathleen Cover Jean Curry Terry Cutler Susan Darrah Connie Davis Mike Dean Grace Diaz -57- 7)etier 7 ian 7rea . . . The fresh- men could hardly wait to get rid of those awful beanies! How they had to work to earn their title of full-fledged frosh! Homecoming is the first big event of a new school year. As the seniors experience their last homecom- ing, they pause to contemplate how and when they will return to the homecoming game of a younger generation. Thus the attitude of a senior toward homecoming is more one of nostalgia, while to a freshman it is a wonderfully new and exciting experi- ence . Jfo ome The bonfire, built by the freshmen, was set off as everyone cheered. A number of yells were done, and Coach Brad- field gave a short pep talk. Then it was off to crash the show, McClintock, in the usual snake dance. The braver and more ambitious underclassmen ran, while the wiser upperclassmen rode in cars. comincj TsJeeJ? Tuesday was Dress- up day, and everyone looked very nice. Wednesday was Beatle day, and no one could recognize his best friend. Thurs- day was Clash day, and no one wanted to be seen with his best friend. Friday night the Twirp Dance climaxed the week. The winning Beatles were: Ron Woods, Joe Horak, Ester Montono, Judy Ato- man, John Lopez, Karyl Calhoun, Peg- gy Conklin, and Richard Lightcap. This page courtesy of CLINE MOTOR CO. Award, receives a certificate of recognition from Mrs. Marquez. -122- Susie Good and Joe Davalos, recipients of the A AWARD. For devotion above and beyond the call of duty... Late in the school year an assembly is held to honor those students of LAHS who have distin- guished themselves and deserve recognition. At a separate assembly the athletic awards are given out. Possibly the highest honor a senior at Las Animas High School can receive is the A Award. This year Susie Good, senior class presi- dent. and Joe Davalos, student body president, were selected by the faculty as senior girl and boy best representing the spirit and aspirations of our school. A special award, which you see Mrs. Bryning, annual staff sponsor, presenting Mr. Cunningham on the left, was given this year by the yearbook staff in grateful appreciation to Mr. Cunningham, Frank Barnett, Joe Davalos, Tom Moore, and Joe Pettus for their photographic contribution to this annual. -123- This page courtesy of HUB CLOTHING T ro ri Q ueen an cfJG n9 -124- The group of people pictured below consider themselves to be some of the hardest- working individuals in Las Animas High School. The product you are now reading is the result of much blood, sweat, and tears. Once the panic of meeting this year's deadlines is over, the surviving members of annual staff start work on next year's yearbook. It's a never ending cycle, but the feeling of satisfaction this work gives seems to make it all worthwhile. STANDING: John Rice, Tim Asbury, Joe Pettus, Karen Woods; SEATED: Judi Nelson, Jane Neely, Judy Richards, Phyllis Woods, Bob Bruegel, Becky Watkins, Gerald Moody, Susan Watkins, Alice Greve, Diana Neely. This book would not have been possible without the dedicated help of the yearbook staff, Mrs. Bryning, Mrs. Riggs, Mr. Bruegel, and many, many others. We hope that you, the students of Las Animas High School, get as much enjoyment and satisfaction out of reading the 1965 TROJAN as we did bringing it to you. 5 TfliiyDag courtes o lM T ISFER 78 cS eniors i Hey, Ray, how do you get such personalized service? -126- Dr. John Turano explaining to the sen- iors that Good Things Are Expensive. Judy Richards, Gwen Martz, Charles Malouff, Dorothy McIntosh, Susie Good, Bob Bruegel, Betty Belcher, Frank Barnett, and Sharon Bain comprised the top ten percent of the graduat- ing class and were entitled to wear special honor cords. Qracfuate in 1965 Commencement is an event that brings all our fears, joys, hopes and aspirations into sharp focus. If our faces are solemn, it is because we have suddenly realized each step we take down that aisle is a step away from the good life we have led, and one closer to the frightening reality of life - and death. It is a step we know must be made, however, and as we cross the stage with our diploma, our step quickens and our eyes raise, confident that Every man is the architect of his future. This scholarship, which is to be awarded to a graduating senior, will be perpetuated by the junior, sophomore, and freshman classes. -127- Although high school does have many lighter and enjoyable moments, it is largely a perplexing search to discover ourselves and our relationship to our world. It is the hope of the 1965 Trojan Staff that all of the l.AHS graduates looking at this annual ten years from now will feel that their search for truth and themselves was successful. c5 tucfenl A_ Akin, Sue, So. 49,89,97,106.
