VERNON HALE Instructor of mathematics, Teacher of athletics and sportsmanship, Friend to all - Truly a worthy man. 5 High school is undoubtedly a vivid, exciting time in any person's life. It is a time of changes - children become young adults, learn to adjust to and meet to the best of their abilities the pressures of new and more demanding situations. They become a more vital part of society, individuals demanding the privileges of individuals. This is life and learning to meet the problems of life. Even though high school is indelibly printed on our minds, we sometimes need a more tangible catalyst to refresh our memories. We have it - THE TROJAN, it was for you - the students - that the TROJAN was created, and it is with the hope that you will cherish the memories within these pages that we proudly present the 1964 Trojan. 6 BESS HAGGARD, Business Manager (above); MARJORIE HUTCHINSON, JOSEPHINE BOWMAN, ' Secretaries to the Superintendent School Board RAY HOCKETT MRS. JEWEL KERR HARRY ALLEN, SUPT. ED BLACKBURN ROY COOPER RICHARD KLETT RICHARD JORGENSON Meeting nearly every Monday evening during the school year, the Las Animas School Board discusses such pertinent issues as the Citizen's Advisory Committee's recommendations, pros and cons concerning the inadequacy of school facilities, curriculum committee reports, school lunch programs and bus transportation. Harry A. Allen 9 E. E BRUEGEL, Principal Busy, busy, busy! That's the way to describe Mrs. Riggs. Even as busy as she is she's never too busy to help when teachers or students need some- thing done urgently to get them out of a fix. SOPHISTICATED SENIORS Our last year in high school - it doesn't seem possible. For many of us it means col- lege while for others it means going out in- to the world to work. It seems like’the end, leaving all of our old friends and fellow classmates, but it is only the beginning. It doesn't matter how far we go away from our school we will always have the memories. Our sophomore year we weren't doing much except causing trouble. As Juniors we were very busy. We had the Prom and liked picking out our class rings. Our busiest year is our senior year. The team in action The 1963-64 Varsity Basketball team started out fairly well at the beginning of the season and slacked off during the middle. They are to be congratulated for their fine sportsmanship and spirit. They made a very impressive showing at District and took home a third place trophy. The graduating Seniors helped the team spirit and kept the underclassmen going. From the spirit and enthusiasm showed by the B squad and freshman teams, it looks like our team will be equally as qualified in future years. Junior Play: Mr. Barry's Etchings 'Made it! The Griswolds and our family are very close. This year the class of '65 presented Mr. Barry's Etchings, a modern comedy. Mr. Barry (Joe Pettus), a soldier of fortune who comes home to live with his sister Bess (Kathy Mitchell), makes etchings as a hobby. One of his better works is a perfect replica of a fifty dollar bill. When Mrs. Griswold (Elsie Losey) declares that her husband, a funeral palace baron, will win the next election hands down, Mr. Barry decides to subsidize the campaign of her husband's op- ponent, a young war veteran named Sam Jorden (Robby Thaxton). Sam wins the election, but a neighborhood boy named Bud (Kenny Brandon) picks up a phony fifty and unwittingly hands it to two no- torious counterfeiters, Fifty Ferris (Susie Good) and Sawbuck Sam (Jim Davis). Carrie Stanwich (Norma Huyck) also tries to find the source of the bills but is unsuccessful. When the Treasury Department is notified of the phodonies, ’’ they send investigator Tom A little more gam, honey. ” Crosby (Pat Irish) on a special mission. While he's on the mission he also finds time to woo Bess's daughter Evelyn (Kathy Warmbir) away from the bank president’s son, Marvin Pritchard (Bob Bruegal). To keep their identities secret both he and Daisy Dayton (Phyllis Woods), the police chief's daughter, pose as Life reporters. Sawbuck Sam and Fifty Ferris reach Mr. Barry first and propose a deal. He holds them off with a toy machine gun and turns everyone including him- self, over to the law. Evelyn becomes engaged to Tom, and a movie producer, Kenneth Plunkett (George Dyck) offers to redeem all of the phony fifties, thus, everything finally turns out for the best and everyone lives hap- pily ever after. The Importance of Being Earnest, an English Farce by Oscar Wilde, was presented by the Senior class this year. The play revolves around a case of mistaken identity. John Worthing (Jim Harris), who lives in the country, comes into London often to visit Algernon Moncrieff (Jeff Vondersmith). Jack gives the people at home the excuse that he is visiting his sick brother, Ernest. Algh, who thought that Jack’s name was Ernest, discovers that he is using a false name and accuses him of Bunburying, Algh's pet name for getting away from home by using a false excuse. In the meantime Jack has been romancing Algy’s cousin, Gwendoline Fairfax (Martha Hayter). Her mother. Lady Fairfax (Rosellen Kipper) does not approve of the romance, though. Jack returns home, but is followed by Algy, who falls in love with Jack’s ward, Cecily Cardew (Pam Joyce). Gwendoline comes to visit Jack and meets Cecily. They have both been under the impression that their suitors were named Ernest, a special name, but the actual truth that they have two imposters on their hands is soon exposed. Dr. Chausable (Sam Palomino) and Miss Prism (Joan Plinn) com- plicate the plot even farther. It seems that Miss Prism was a nurse for Lady Fairfax's brother nearly 35 years ago, and just happened to lose a baby. That baby was Jack, whose real name turns out to be Ernest Moncrieff, which satisfies Gwendoline and her mother enough to marry. Cecily and Jack's long-lost brother Algy also get married. More humor was added to the play by Jack's butler, Merriman (Tom Evans) and Algy's tippling butler, Lane (Danny Owens.) I I I Homecoming — Festivities Elsie displays her school spirit by stuffing napkins in the big football, the Junior class Homecoming entry. Pam and Joyce support Alamosa's mascot, hoping he'll get the stuffing knocked out of him at the game! i Shadows and dust devils lend a primitive atmosphere to the Freshman Homecoming bonfire. Bob Gibson watches while Homecoming Queen, Connie ] Grasmick, gets a crowning kiss from team captain, John , Holt. 1 Freshmen button gladly. This is the last buttoning they'll have to do and most of them will be glad to be free of their blue and white beanies. The game goes on to a crashing climax, 19-18. Even the one point loss didn’t dampen the dance spirits. 112 Students in Action Crowning Miss Christmas Grand March Time Out At the yearly formal in Action Gwen Martz wins first prize Our version of the Beatles Roaring Twenties' National Assemblies tti I Each year the National School Assemblies Program brings several interesting shows into our school we enjoyed several shows including three Austrian dancers, a trained which are not only educational but are entertaining as well. The Junior class president presented the Prom King and Queen, JOHN HOLT and MARTHA HAY- TER, with floral leis. It isn't a long wait. The walk in seems long and I experience moments of fear, of joy, of doubt, of satisfaction, of nostalgia. The seat, reached without mishap, offers a se- curity from shaky knees, a breathless feel- ing. Listening to Dr. Fred J. Plachy of Adams State College speak on What's Next, I feel impatient but try to be at- tentive. My tassel bobs back and forth with each movement of my head. It seems al- ways to be obstructing my vision or dis- tracting my attention. The robe and the crowd add to a sensation of heat. Out of the corner of my eye I can see parents, Commencement — 1964 relatives and friends standing'and occasionally a baby cries. Often my attention is drawn to a pertinent, thought- provoking remark or a joke by Dr. Plachy, but mostly I'm waiting - waiting through a trombone solo by my friend, Mike Tucker; waiting while the top students scholastically - Lee Herron, Jim Harris, Jay Britton, Christi ODell, Candy Morgan, Rosellen Kipper, Jean Hohman and Joan Flinn - receive their honor certificates; waiting while Joint Honor Scholarships and others are awarded. The waiting is over. The audience is hushed. A few parents stand poised with their cameras. The walk across the stage is short and to the point ... a murmured encouragement from Mr. Allen, a handshake. A handshake from Mr. Brue- gel while he changes my tassel so it can bob in the other eye and then I'm back in my seat. The tense feeling is gone. Four years have passed quickly and all this is symbolized in a small piece of paper. Now I can ponder the question posed by the speaker, What's Next? THE GREATER STRENGTH If now the path ahead seems long and steep. Beset with jagged rock and narrow pass. Relax and rest a moment; do not weep. Look bravely upward toward the greener grass On higher slopes more open to the sun. Glance backward briefly; not the progress made From far down where the climbing was begun. With new perspective, go forth unafraid. Through untold centuries men have sought to win Their way to power by force; but now we see That love has greater strength; has ever been The path of peace and rich fraternity. The goal of peace on earth, and in our time. Inspires the strong to choose the upward climb. Carrie C. Huthsing 126 TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World's Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made .
