W foreword This year was basically the same as any high school year; we studied, had fun, and experienced sad moments of trial and error. School bonds were passed. There were games and dances; voices were hoarse from Pep Club rooting and singing. There were brief moments of glory for some of us in sports, musical and dramatic productions. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to the loyal Trojan Staff. The Staff, however, has furnished only the outlines of the story that we find when we turn these pages filled with warm smiles of friendship and many happy recollections. The rest is up to the individual. Underclassmen who return to LAHS in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school and strive for improvement. Graduates will go their separate ways using the knowledge they have gained here to reach their successes. It is not only today that we will appreciate THE TROJAN. Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back on 1963, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. The following statement will always hold true; Tis pleasant, sure, to see one's name in print. 4 Susie Good, Anita Sena, Lee Herron, Lucille Sin- clair, Eileen Newcomb, Virginia Halladay. Robert Thaxton, Judy Richards, Candy Morgan, Charlene Lopez, Rebecca Watkins, Norma Schmeiser, Martha Hayter, Charles Malouff, Bob Bruegel, Gerald Moody, Frank Barnett, Dorothy McIntosh, Jerry Warmbir, Pat Nelson. 5 It is certain that we, the student body of Las Animas High School, have grown to depend on you, Mr. Moore and Mr. Byers, for everything. You are always there to lend a helping hand, whether it be false ceilings or posters that need erecting. For the past fifteen years you have been coming to work hours before we arrive, to attend to your regular duties. Somehow, you manage to be at most school activ- ities during the afternoons and evenings. Mr. Byers and Mr. Moore, as a token of our gratitude for your unending de- votion to the students of Las Animas High School, we the 1962-63 Trojan annual staff dedicate this 1962-63 Trojan annual to you. 6 School Board STANDING: Harry Allen, Superintendent; Ray Hockett, Ed Blackburn, Mrs. Noel Kerr, Richard Klett. Allen, Superintendent of Schools With the reorganization of the school districts of Bent County in the fall of 1961 the machinery for making broad changes in the school program were placed in operation. It is the mission of the Las Animas School District No. Re-1 to assist every individual develop real strengths (knowledge, understandings, attitudes, skills and habits of life) to sustain that individual in a manner of living that is personally rewarding and socially beneficial. The total capability of the newly organized school district is being brought to bear toward effectively carrying out this mission. The 1961-62 school term was one devoted to planning and organizing for immediate changes that were to be made at the opening of the 1962-63 school term. A district-wide junior high school program was established with all seventh and eighth grade pupils being placed under a departmental program at Columbian School. The Rixey School was utilized to house a newly organized elementary program (K-6) for pupils who live in the Fort Lyon, Kreybill and Rixey areas. The Melonfield building was utilized to house the third grade sections from the Columbian School service area. To provide for the transportation of pupils, an expanded bus system was inaugu- rated. Fourteen bus routes and three feeder routes are operated to provide transportation services for more than 600 pupils each day. The educational needs of the school community in the fast moving electronic age are being examined by the community through the services of a Citizens Advisory Committee. This committee has the responsibility for defining the curriculum plan required to meet the needs and aspirations of the school district. This curriculum plan will be used as the basis for the development of comprehensive instruction programs, the acquisition and utilization of instructional resources and materials, and the provision of adequate facilities. 9 E. E. BRUEGEL Principal of Las Animas High School Always busy yet always understanding, considerate and willing to help students with their problems, E. E. Bruegel, our principal, spends much of each day work- ing with students, with the faculty, with the organization of myriad details all of which make LAHS a better school, a school meeting the challenges of today’s education. 10 JAMES BIUNDO Assistant Principal MRS. Let there be no sectionalism, no North, South, East or West; you are all dependent one on another ... In one word, be a nation . . . ” George Washington We’re the Seniors, fes Sirree.. Class Officers Leonard Avila, Gerald White, Chester Beck, Victor Britton. Those dresses wrong side-out and men's clodhoppers on our feet . . . The barefoot boys carrying baby bottles, wearing diapers and baby bonnets . . . Freshman initiation - Yes - one of the highlights of our freshman year at LAHS. We all remember how difficult it was to scoot pennies across the gym floor with our noses. Our Sophomore year we won 1st prize for our Homecoming Float as well as Sante Fe Trail Day. And what Senior girl can look back without smiling at being a Black Mammy and serving at the Prom, The Old South that year; all the fellows served as chauffeurs that night and . . . Now came that next to the best, our Junior year. We had lots of hard work and fun on our band trips to Alamosa and Canon City. We chose our class rings; we suffered thru concessions; and, then came that frustrating, exasperating, exhausting, irritating panic Junior- Senior Prom. At 6;00 we were still decorating! And then came the last of everything; the last homecoming; the last Y-Teen Formal; the last athletic events; the last Talent Show; the last pep assemblies; the last drama production; the last Junior- Senior Prom and finally our announcements, our sneak trip, and our commencement. And so we left, 59 big wheels to become 59 little spokes in a big wheel - life. Seniors not pictured: Bill Foster, Jack Foster, and Bill St. Ledger. This was our Junior Class, the last class to go through the ritual of freshman initiation. We have had a lot of fun in our first three years of high school. In our Freshman year we started off nicely by having the first place float in the Home- coming Parade. That year our candidate, Pam Joyce, was the Santa Fe Trail Day Queen. In our Sophomore year we had the first place Santa Fe Trail Day float and won the class participation trophy also. The float was the tallest in many a year. The Tro- jan Horse cleared the stoplights by only three inches. This year we have been very busy. Our candidate, Joyce Jorgenson, was the Homecoming Queen. But we had headaches because our float was locked up and missed the parade. The decorations for our prom Three Coins in a Fountain were beautifully done. On Santa Fe Trail Day we took first place in the class participation contest again and our candidate, Donna Gardner, was the queen. Our picnic will wrap up a fine year, one to be looked back upon with fond memories. This page is sponsored by A. W. In just two short years we have come far. Our Freshman Officers, Bob Baublits, Becky Watkins, Susie Good, and Robert Thaxton, led us to lots of fun and hard work. Our homecoming float Stairsteps to Victory won no prizes but we had so much fun building it! Remember all the good times at the class picnic in La Junta: Dunkings in ice water, riding home in the back of the truck during the storm! This year's Homecoming float did much better, we won first place. Gwen Martz, a sophomore, won the Y-Teen Talent Show this year singing Moon River, and another sophomore, Diana Tali- ferro was selected queen of the Y-Teen Formal. We'll never be able to forget all the hours we spent on our knees buttoning or our first float for Home- coming. We went to our first Sadie Hawkins and never will be the same. We also attended the Y-Teen Formal, Courtwarming and built our float for Santa Fe Trail Day. All in all it's been a long but mem- orable year and we’re sure glad there are three more to go! The Freshmen hated to miss one of their hectic days at school, so they decided to have an 'ole' fashioned school for their Santa Fe Trail Day float. Dan is a bellboy in a resort hotel remotely lo- cated in Exxes, England. Having visited Dora Parker, maid at Mrs. Bramson's, Dan is summoned to the Bramson Cottage. Such is his charm that Mrs. Bramson is immediately taken with him, adding him to her household servants. The murder of a guest at the hotel is traced to Dan by Olivia, an unhappy neice of Mrs. Bramson's, who elects to shield him. Dan, grateful but powerless in the grip of his homicidal instincts, plots the murder of Mrs. Bramson for her money. The police take him away to be hanged, leaving Olivia relieved but desolate.
