Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1961 volume:

I am Education. I bear the torch that enlightens the world, fires the imagination of man and feeds the flames of genius. I give wings to dreams and might to brawn and brain. From out the silent shadows of the past I come, wearing the scars of struggle and the stripes of soil, but bearing in triumph the wisdom of all ages. Man, because of me, holds dominion over earth, air and sea; it is for him I leash the lightning, plumb the deep and shackle the waves of ether. I am the parent of progress, the creator of culture and the molder of destiny. Philosophy, science and art are my handiworks. I banish ignorance, discourage vice, disarm anarchy. Thus have I become freedom's citadel, the arm of democracy, the hope of youth, the pride of adolescence, the joy of age. Fortunate the nations and happy the homes that welcome me. The school is my workshop; here I stir ambitions, stimulate ideals, forge the keys that open the door to opportunity, the master of human destiny. I am the source of inspiration, and aid of aspiration, for I am Irresistible Power. 1870 )ent Gou i yJlnj i 1961 A private or subscription school was opened at Boggsville (one mile south of Las Animas) in the fall of 1869. by Miss Mattie Smith. That building, located on the corner of Vigil Avenue and Seventh Street - a two-story, three-roomed, adobe structure, was the foundation of our present school system. In April, 1870, Bent County was organized and on April 25, 1870, School District No. 1 was organized. In 1871 Bent County was 110 miles long and 84 miles wide. The first and only school district at that time was No. 1, which included Boggsville. The first public school was held in the fall of 1871 at Boggsville. The Las Animas high school students went to high school in the old Frey School building close to the site of Memorial School. In 1915, the new Bent County High School was completed and occupied for the first time. (Old section of present Bent County High) Today, Bent County High School has a fast-growing curriculum. The approximate number of students attending today is three hundred forty-nine. Because of the steady pace of growth and development, there is a demand for advanced courses which are being added, giving us a more rounded curriculum. Including 1960, two thousand four hundred sixty-three students have graduated from Bent County High School. Serving as class sponsor, you have always been willing to give your advice and help to the class members. Our International Relations Club was started through your living interest in world affairs. Today, in its sixth year, under your leadership and guidance, the club has gained prestige at the Model United Nations Assembly held annually at Adams State College. To add to your admirable list of accomplishments, you are now Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Division Department of Classroom Teachers in the Colorado Education Association. You have often said, I feel my day is successful if I have put across one new point. If this is the case, then we, as your students, know that you have had many successful days. This 1961 Trojan Annual is dedicated to you, Mrs. Crites, and with it goes our deepest admiration and respect. The 1961 Trojan Staff International Relations Club ADMINISTRATION The Trojan from whom we get our name was characterized by his spirit, courage, resolution, endurance and determined energy. The need for these honored attributes has increased with the passage of time and with the many challenges that confront us today. We watch with appreciation and gratitude as we see you, the students of our schools, the modern Trojans, meet these challenges and prepare yourselves in order to adequately meet the challenges that will confront us in the future. In ever increasing measure our fate, our hope for the future, rests with you who shall make the future. We are encouraged and cheered by the spirit and resolution which you demonstrate in meeting this future. We gain courage to know that you have the determined energy to meet and shape our world and the endurance to face and conquer a complex and unfolding universe. Sincerely, SCHOOL BOARD: Carl Earl, Hazel Martin, Mrs. George Jacobs, Gene Holt, Roger Nelson, Harry Allen. MARJORIE HUTCHINSON. Editor's Note: Well, it looks like we have more space than pictures so I'll have to think of something to fill the space at the bottom of this page so it won't look so bare and spoil the looks of the page because that wouldn't be the right thing to do at all, but I am having trouble thinking of anything to say of a worthwhile nature because I never was good at making extemporaneous speeches and things like that and it is quite a strain as I am sure you will all agree, so 1 thought I would say something witty or of great political weight, but there isn’t much a gal like me can say about things like that that can be printed anyhow so I won't say any of those things either, and don't you think we are having lovely weather today, but it looks like it might rain, but to get back to the subject at hand, here comes Mr. Bruegel and he looks real mad about something so I had better get back to work or he'll get a lot madder and since I'm running out of space and things to say anyhow I guess I won't say anything more except you had better quit chewing gum or Mrs. Crites might see you and then you would have to renew your subscription to the National Geographic.
