Text from Pages 1 - 92 of the 1956 volume:

When you open this book in the years to come and see upon these pages those whom you thought you had forgotten, we hope that it may bring back many cherished memories of the year 1956. The Yearbook Staff finds that this will be the only record of this year you will have in the future. If you forget a face or a name it is here always preserved for you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. INTRODUCING t.A« 9S6 MRS. KATHLEEN RIGGS, Bruegel. MR. E. E. BRUEGEL, B. A. Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa; B. S. The Senior Class, money-minded as usual, has held very successful ten-cent dinners and bake sales throughout the year. The Class held a chili supper and has had concessions at basketball games. There are many cars around town with Trojan stickers on them, thanks to the diligence and good salesmanship of the Senior Class. Believe it or not, the first old classmate I saw was sober! He was Dale Dooley, president of Alcoholics Anonymous; with him were two of his recent converts, Everett Lusk and Jerry Brooks. A loud crash shook the modem club where we had agreed to meet as the bartender, John Fimple, dropped a tray of glasses containing his original drink -- Fimple's Factory Whistle (one blow and you're through for the day) -- when Hollywood's newest sexation, Nancey Billings, appeared in the doorway. The proprietor of this bustling establishment, Doug Dyck, made his way to our table to greet some of his old friends; Thelma Field, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Alice Cooper, one-time manager of Las Animas Hardware; Ph D. Mary Hill, Dean of Zoological Sciences at Tumbleweed Junction Junior College; and the former Joan McVay, her husband, and their little basketball team. Sharon Stewart, center for the Redheads, was giving Joan's children a demonstration on how to shoot hook shots. Watching her was another famous figure in the sports world, Albert Coffey, middleweight champion wrestler of the world. Talking about ball teams! Here come Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Chambers; she is the former Earlene Johnston, and their minature football squad. At the next table Harry Uyeda, television's most famous wrestler; George Marquez, catcher for the Cleveland Giants; and Larry Turner, first baseman with the Brooklyn Yankees, are telling a few of their experiences in the world of sports to a group of admirers, who are respectively; Mary Ann Bruegel, singing sensation of the Grand Ol' Opry; Pat Kenworthy, head of a subversive labor organization -- The Molly Maguires; lone Rose, bubbledancing queen of the Greenwich Village Little Theater; Hope Estrada, Secretary of State in the cabinet of President Little; June Montoya, owner of Montoya, Montoya, and Montoya -- formerly Pruett, Thaxton, and Clark; and Marilyn Harris, M. D., famous hang-nail specialist. Suddenly with a clatter and a bang Zeke Villa's band, the Kool Kats — with Benny (Merle) Baublits on the clarinet, Dorsey (Robin) Crites on trombone, and Liberace (Glen) Sweany complete with candlebra on piano --struck up Anchors Away” and from a far corner of the room Rear Admiral Lonnie Kaufman, Ensign Ray Sanchez, Corporal Betty Bracken, and Lieutenant Mary Lou Roberts began to serenade our group with the Navy song. During the last chorus Melvin Kenworthy, owner of Saks 5th Avenue, appeared with two beautiful dolls on each arm. On closer inspection they turned out to be the four most famous models of the day: Myrl Elmer, Shirle) Sharpe, Margaret Avila, and Dee Ann Harman. Following rignt on their heels were several reporters for the New York Newsweek -- Harvey Allen, Alex Armijo, and Emery Murray, who were trying to get interview dates with the girls. Carla Nelson, editor of the Newsweek, and her printer, Tom Pawlish, were also in the crowd around Mel and his models. Sally Strobridge, world-renouned yodeler, just ran into the room screaming about Speed King's new sports car, The Supersonic Sphere, which had screeched to a halt outside. Everyone rushed out to congratulate Vernal and his passenger Melvin Coats, Professor of Fine Arts at Vassar. While we were admiring tne new car, designed by Louis Gallegos and manufactured by the Stephens, Seal, and Sena Sports Car Co., Inc.; who should gallop up but Bob West, world-champion cowboy, shouting Hi-ho, Platinum! Well, guess who just joined our group! Allen Main, basketball coach at U. C. L. A. He’s discussing the hard life of a school teacher with Doyle Beamer, who's coaching football at Harvard now. Their conversation was drowned out as the Kool Kats began to play again and everyone filed back inside to dance. The cigarette girls have just made their appearance. More old classmates! Donnita Cox, Julia Abdulla, Barbara Pryor, and Marcella Ferrell tonight are selling only one brand of cigarettes, Bar-B, developed in the research laboratories of Jack Barbee and Gayle Riegel. There are some more familiar faces! Don Canfield, eminent dentist is bopping with Nancy McGee, who has just completed five years of study with Christian Dior; Bob Wheeler, disc jockey on KLMR-TV, is discussing the art of music with Leo James, who now has his own fifteen-minute show over Channel 17; Rosalie Voss, Sonja Quarles, Betty Sue Ridley, and Joan Miller are telling Susan Diaz, another career woman, about their new store — a combination of Penney's, Gambles, and Wood’s Fair; and physicists Barbara Gayman and Ann Purvis are going over Newton’s Third Law of Motion with Harry Atkinson and James Jeffreys, one-time scientists who have now turned to safe-cracking as a more profitable vocation. Everyone was starved by now, so Connie Hoffman, hostess of Doug's Place, began seating the guests. While we were waiting for our food we were entertained by the Flat-Tops -- Alfred Martinez, John Marlman, Joe Allen Keller, and Delbert Lusk, who sang several popular songs. Then the delicious dinner, prepared by chef Fred Abel with ingredients donated by Tom Whatley — owner of a chain of supermarkets — was served. While we were eating, our honorable guests arrived. They are none other than Mr. and Mrs. Wade and Mr. and Mrs. Thurston, all of whom just returned from Africa. Mr. Thurston had been spending three years studying plant life, there, and assisted by Mrs. Thurston, he discovered a new theory on plants. Mr. Wade is the U. S. Ambassador to Africa and Mrs. Wade has taken a leave of absence from her job of teaching English to the natives. The enjoyable evening was almost over but everyone had a chance to renew their lasting friendships Back row; Sponsor Mr. Stiverson, Johnston, Bruegel, Dyck, Wygle, Purvis, Weber, Sweany, Sakai, Furse, Russel.
