Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1955 volume:

This little fellow you see on this page is Trojan and he represents the Trojan Spirit. The Trojan Spirit is the feelings we have towards our school and its many components. We will all remember our high school days and their memories will be different for everyone. Some of us will remember the award we received for perfect attendance or the exciting game we played with Lajunta. Some of us might even remember the time we were sent to the office for Nothing at all, so we said. All the members of the Annual Staff hope that you will enjoy our annual and we can only say, We Tried. TROIAN Superintendent MR. T.H. PICKENS SCHOOL BOARD Sam Borne, C. A. Watkins, T. H. AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS Nova Dayle Freemeyer o live, that when thy summons the innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death; Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust; Approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams. Canon City Abbey (32-9) The Trojans won their first game of the season by beating Canon City Abbey. The Trojans looked very sharp considering only two weeks of practice. Walsenburg (39-6) Revenge is sweet. That was our motto for the Walsenburg game. The team really showed them who was the boss on the field. The Trojans had a field day and gave the Panthers a good tromping. Springfield (34-6) The Longhorns had a rough night when they came to Las Animas. The Trojans won an easy victory while using substitutes freely. Lamar (6-26) The undefeated Trojans met their first loss at the hand of the Lamar Savages. The game was a heart breaker to the many loyal Trojan fans who accompanied the team to Lamar. Rocky Ford (6-21) The Trojans lost their second league game in a row to Rocky Ford. The Trojans played tough football, but the big Meloneers were too powerful. Florence (51-6) The Trojans showed strong team work when they defeated the Florence Huskes. Everything went right for the Trojans and they had an easy victory. La Junta (19-6) The hardest fought and most exciting game of the season was a victory for Las Animas. The Trojans were in top shape and played their best ball of the year. District 70 (40-6) This concrete game proved to be the spark that built the Trojans up for the La Junta-Las Animas game. The District 70 Hornets were at the mercy of the thundering Trojans. Canon City (14-6) The Bent County boys brought home the meat after venturing to Canon City. The game was hard fought but the Trojans came through in good shape. Walsenburg St. Marys (32-7) The Trojans won their last game of season in fine shape. This game the Trojans a season record of 8 wins and 2 losses. Coot?? ConJ i J tt-Te's UK I f CLASS OF 1955 'THIS I PREDICT.............. Would you like to know today what the Class of 1955 will be doing in 1965, ten years from now? PoffI Poofl Ah.it's coming in clear now.Yes, this is the way I see it; this, is the way I see it all. Sit right down there on that cloud and take a glide with me down main street, in Las Animas. Boy, there's quite a commotion over there! Well, guess what? It's only BEVERLY and Ralph showing off their third set of twins. It seems they named them Gret- chen Lou and Rose Mae Alice. Real cute, eh? kitchie, kitchie koo. Gosh, if it isn't KAREN HICKEY and her team of Eskimo dogs pulling into town. And there's WALT RIDGE driving Karen and the team! I wonder how their marriage turned out? Man, what a crowd of people just to see those twins. The town's old maids, JANET T. and MARY M. are there. And so is the local barber, CHARLIE P. I don't know the rest of those people. Well, floating on along down the street here, I can see JACK L. and BUCK H. 's kids fighting over marbles. JOE B, and ROBERT E. are having a gas war it looks like. CHET C. and his band are serenading MARCELLA B. and VIRGINIA F. who are still waiting for certain fellows to graduate. HARRY S. and HAROLD C. are having a race with their tractors now. Brother, they had better be careful or Sheriff ELLIOTT will run them la. OOOPPS, it's getting colder up there; I guess I'd better fly a little lower. Over there is BILL G. and PETE WILLIAMS' sporting goods store. JUDY G. and SHIRLEY T. have recently opened up their Ladles' Athletic center. There’s All-American RITCHHART coming out of WHATLEY'S Super Market. EEEYYOOOWWWW? Watch your heads! I'd better watch where I'm flying. HENRY A., the jet ace almost hit me I That seems to be the only familiar faces I see here in town. But I reckon I ought to tell you where the rest of the gang is now that I've started; so make yourself comfortable. DON K. and RICHARD M. are working for the La Junta Cattlemen's Association. ROSA D. and SUE D. are still teaching school (poor kids). DON C. and JIM B. are making out in Hollywood all right I guess. Jim's latest production is Kiss Me Quick. WALT BRAY is still studying to be a mortitlan so that he can be Las Animas’ friendly undertaker, (Incidently, he has been practicing on JOHN F. and JOHN D.) What's this we hear about PAULINE A. ? Rumor has it she's working down at the Dry Ice plant as a chemist. Wonder what brew she is concocting now??? So SHIRLEY A. has gotten a promotion, eh? She's now in charge of the button and pin department at Woolworth’s in New York. FRANKLIN Caruso KELLER seems to be making good on Broadway. His latest hit was North Atlantic. CHARLENE C. and ZELLA MAE are still housewives; but there's ELSIE F. She is still playing the field. Seems ESTELLA S. has really gone places with her good looks; she recently won the Mrs. Bent County contest. CAROLYNN Y. and BETTY JEAN are still trying to learn how to ride a horse backwards like WAYNE M. does. It's amazing how those girls fall for him. JUNE ANN is still studying at Greeley—they say she's killing herself by degrees. LAVERNE MYERS has tooted her way to fame—she's now head of the flute department at La Junta Junior College. STELLA MARTINEZ has run onto the answer for pre-season swimmers, fur-lined bathing suits. By the way, Stella is also modeling them at LOUISE J. s fashion shop. It seems sales at Louise's have sky-rocketed to the point of driving Bookkeeper ART ESTRADA crazy. BUTCH GLASSCOE has finally reached his ambition in life; he is the batboy for the Cleveland Indians. JANET H. is the local swimming instructor at the YMCA. ANGEL A. is her star pupil by the way. He cap do the double jack-knife turn-away with ease. ANDY PAWUSH has been promoted just recently to Engineer on the super-chief. He always said he would take up engineering. Who's this lonely hermit that lives deep in the cedars? Can it be BILL RICE— still hunting uranium? MARGIE ESQUIBEL has gone the farthest—all the way to Paris where she is helping design Christian Dior. Seems Margie is influencing the latest knee-lenth fashions. CLAUDIA HAM's interest in international relations has led to an outstanding position in the U.N. Claudia is the interpreter for the Russian delegate. Quite influential, so we hear. FRANCIS B. has finally developed his body to the point where he recently won the Mr. America Contest. ANTONIA T. and JUANITA O. are now running a baby-sitting agency. I hear they are getting rich. JEAN Mc-CLAIN is still booking toward higher politics. Besides recently winning the office of Mayor, she is now running for police magistrate. The local pool shark, of course, is DAVID S. SHIRLEY McGEE and JANICE M. are selling real estate and insurance. PHILIP MONTOYA is still driving tractors, but he's over at JERRY C. 's farm now. FERN P. and MARLYS S. are taking a correspondence course in child psychology. PETE WILL BURN and KIN NY T. are in Alaska manufacturing frozen ice cubes, DEAN OWENS and JAMES OWENS have really climbed to success 1 They are the famous Owen Boys' that do that popular dancing on T.V. By George, that's exactly the way I see it. Just wait and see how close I came!!! A LITHOGRAPHED — YEARBOOK DALLAS • TEXAS Darkhorse Trojans Win State The genius of Sam Landrum’s coaching and the skill, spirit and depth of his BCHS Trojan basketball team was too much for the other Class A teams in the Colorado State Basketball Tournament last weekend. The Trojans upset Glenwood Springs 39-34, then the Durango team 65 48, then the highly rated Fort Morgan team 74-65 to win the Class A trophy. They completely surprised most everyone at the tournament, except Las Animas fans who knew the Trojans could win the championship if they could only keep from getting a chill like the one that struck them in the second quarter of the Lamar game in the district finals. The big city newspapers and sportscasters acted as if they hardly knew the Trojans were in Denver even after they drubbed Glenwood, which was supposed to be the toughest team in the tourney, next to Fort Morgan. Many local fans were bitter about the Denver Post’s coverage of the Trojans, which gave them its biggest headline to say they were one of Coach Clayton Gray’s two teams in the tourney. While fans like Gray, who left here last year to go to Sterling, they’re crazy about Sam Landrum, and they didn’t like the Post’s story which left the impression their success was not due to Landrum’s efforts. 39- ,G e ood 34 La 55. 3o 6 fAo 9°n 65 Klinkerman Was High Scorer For Trojans Here is how the Trojans scored as individuals in the state basketball tournament: wo u 2 n o 5 3 3 K 3 2 o ST o o . a 7Q 03 ! i i i • ■ 3 i Klinkerman __ . -- 9 16 14 39 Richeson 6 14 18 38 Joe Brooks — 4 8 20 32 Ritchhart __ . ... 14 14 28 Litle — 4 5 8 17 Trujillo 2 5 4 11 Dyck ___ — 0 0 10 10 Main 3 0 3 Willburn . 0 0 0 Jerry Brooks 0 0 0 Left to right, top to bottom-.
