DEDICATION To our Parents: Who have been patient in spite of our short comings, who have set us a pattern to live by, and whose sacrifices have made our school memories, Happy Ones. Our lives are albums written through With good or ill - with false or true And, as the blessed angels turn The pages of our years, God grant they read the good with smiles. And blot the bad with tears. Sponsored by LAS ANIMAS LEADER SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY On a warm summer night in 1963 finds the BCHS graduating class of 53 at their first reunion at the exclusive Club Caddoa, on the shore of Lake Hasty, about 20 miles from Las Animas. Partially hidden by artificial palms are two members of the class, a man and his wife, who are commenting on meeting their old classmates. The woman says to her husband, There’s Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hayward. She was the former Jean McBride, you know. Leo is in the senate now and he also owns the Hayward Standard Service in Las Animas. And look who just came in--Clark Billings and Vance Burton. After Serving in the paratroops they toured Pan America. They’re also rolling in the chips since they bought Clark’s Casino in Reno. And there with them is Melvin Taylor. Melvin is a professor at Mines now. Tap dances at a night club in Golden every night for extra money, too. . Oh, do you see Yoland Meyer? She's the one in the mink. She just flew in from the coast after a Bermuda honeymoon. It's her third marriage, but she says this time it’s for keeps. And there's Mrs. Max Wheeler. She was Judy Taliaferro, you know. She said she left Max at home with their three boys. They hope to have their own basketball team someday. Joan Dimmitt just came in after riding the water skis out on the lake. She is making her 25th picture for Warner Brothers next year. It'll be called My Heart Pines for You. There's Gracie Elmer. She still lives in Las Animas and is trying to make up her mind about a sailor and home town ex-Marine. Who's that dancing out there? Why it’s Mr. and Mrs. John Edgett. She was Donna Canfield. Since she worked his way through college, they have been living on a farm near here. George Fields is still wrestling with the old maid problem. He's dancing with Jean Burger, a kindergarten teacher. He is manager of Safeway and they plan to be married when they feel they can afford it. There's Hazel. Used to be Breckenridge, you know. She is quietly married to a minister. Don't Yoshimi Hasui and Sue Marcum look chic? They should, they're fashion directors at the Denver Dry Goods. Nona Gay Sallee came from her ranch in Tucson. She will stay until the State Fair when she appears as trick rider of Nelson's Nimble Tricksters. Beverly Glasscoe is modeling for Breck Shampoo ads. The photographers cna't keep their minds on their work, either. Remember that junk yard we passed outside of town? Don White, Tim McChesney, and Kenneth Arnold own it. They are developing a rocket ship out of old cars. There's Joan Lingle over by the orchestra. She is married to Dave Terboss now and they live in New York state. Barbara Shriver is married too, to a Marine captain. Mollie Thomas has succeeded Mr. Thurston in the science department at BCHS. And, oh, Ron Losey just made an appearance. He is number 99 on the Navy football team. There's Larry Tucker, too. He owns Tuck's General Store near the Fort. And Ed Gillespie and Willie Quarles. They own the Sunbow pop factory now. They call it Peco and Cue's Beverages. Boy, Brad Samuelson has sure changed. He lives in New York and is a bookie taking bets on the Yankees. Joan Akin has gone to the big city, too. She is the blond bombshell of Ziegfield follies in Hollywood. Marjorie Rasmussen just came over on an ocean liner from England, where she is a famous poet. Beulah Platt came with her; she is dressmaker for Queen Elizabeth. Dorothy Carpenter is mother of the Theta Rho girls chapter in Las Animas. That guy playing the trombone in the orchestra is Eugene Bentley. He looks real nice in his tuxedo. Don Phillips is the owner of that new filling station out here, Conoco, of course. Patrick Springstead could hardly find time to come, he's working on a big law suit. He's state DA. Lester Uyeda, leading Bent county truck farmer is raising onions that are known in hamburger joints the world over. What a surprise! There's Mrs. Templeton and Mr. Cooper, our class sponsors. Both have quit teaching; Mrs. Templeton is directing Harvey on Broadway; its third straight year. Mr. Cooper is head of sales promotion for Buster Brown Shoes at their main office in St. Louis. Ralph Binam is out there cutting a rug. He is head engineer here at the dam. Ann Dillon and her ex-airman husband are going to town on a large farm out south. Jean Muniz is head buyer for the Woolworth's store in Denver, thread department. Joyce Funk, with her sweet disposition, is getting to be well known in the UN. She assists Mrs. Roosevelt. Oscar Ferguson was recently voted LA's most eligible bachelor. He is still slaying the women with his mysteriousness. A. C. Rowan is busy perfecting a new type of AC current, which will benefit chemists in their lab work. Butvh Setchfield has just come back from the Cattlemen's Association meeting in Cheyenne. He’s president, and is arguing for socialized veterinary medicine. Melvin Shriver and his wife, Helen, are now managers of the Country Club north of Las Animas. Floyd Trujillo just came in. He recently finished his world wrestling tour. He didn't lose a match, either, with his full-Nelson. Standing over there at the punch bowl is John Salas, Bruce Beaman and Wilbur Thomas. John has a regular KLMR program now. He is top entertainer with his Jerry Lewis and Donald Duck imitations. John has made so much money that he is running two horses in the Kentucky Derby this year. Just look at those classy cowboy togs of Bruce’s. He owns a thousand acre ranch in Texas now. Drove down in his new Cadillac, which he says is merely transportation. Wilbur is married and is Las Animas Chief of Police. Traffic accidents in the old town have been reduced by 837o. • There's Mary Christensen and Audrey McBride. After graduating from Vassar, they own the leading grocery in town, A M's Market. Oh, look. Zelma Poole and Esther Voss just flew in. After fooling around with cars for several years, they're new hobby is airplanes. Mable Lutz is assistant manager of Cliff's AG. I heard they were thinking of changing the name to Cliff’s and Mable's. Look who staggered in. There's Ken Jantzen, Harry Vandiver, Tom Cragen, and Harold Canfield. Ken, with his way with the women, is a cosmetic salesman. He says he knew his learning in Mr. Cooper's coordination class would be good for something. Harry, for some unknown reason, is living in La Junta. He owns what was formerly Marshall's Cafe and has named it Harry's Hangout, but it is better known as Harry's Hangover. Tommy is branch manager of International Harvester sales in Rocky Ford. Harold, dressed classy as ever, is over there flirting with some of the women. Stanfield is center for Phillips 66 basketball team. Diane Burner is working for the Rocky Mountain News. It is rumored that she is Molly Mayf ield. Dixie Lee Blakeley is a home economist for Swift and Co. Harold Jeffreys is operating an experimental farm out in Horse-creek for Colorado A M. Further, a closer look at the scores shows the team had to get most of their wins the hard way. They had to come from behind in many of their games and won two thrillers from Lamar and La Junta by single points. All the members of the Las Animas squad played together as a unit and therein lies the reason for their success. While not an exceptional or sensational team, they were able to rise to the occasion when the going was rough. The Trojans won second place honors in the Southern Colorado League, losing only to the Rocky Ford Meloneers. The Las Animas Team will be hit hard by graduation by losing nine seniors from the squad. However a good B Squad which won four games, lost two, and tied one will bolster next year's team. For the second consecutive year Mothers have been invited to attend the annual football banquet because of their patience when the boys came home late for supper. Fred Sisk was the master of ceremonies who kept the crowd laughing with his wonderful sense of humor. Dal Ward was the main speaker of the evening. s p R I N G F I E L D BROOKS BARRELS FOR SIX POINTS The Trojans got off the 1952 season to a roaring start with a lop-sided 43-0 win over the Springfield Longhorns. In holding the visitors scoreless the defensive work of Harry Vandiver, Doyle Beamer, Larry Holstlau, and Vance Burton stood-out. The Trojans were able to score at will and the reserves played a good portion of the game. Joe Brooks completed 7 out of 12 passes and two were for touchdowns. Curley ran 80 yards on an intercepted pass behind fine blocking. The game indicated that the Trojans would be strong this season. A rugged Trojan football team avenged two previous defeats and broke a 25 game winning streak by defeating the Manzanola Bobcats 27-19. A fired-up bunch of Trojans had to battle all the way for this well-earned victory. In a rough wide open game played in a driving rain, the team was forced to get their yardage through the middle the hard way. HAYWARD HAULS TWO BOBCATS AND THE BALL ACROSS c A N 0 N C 1 T Y HULSE IN-A-HURRY (CALLED BACK, DARN IT) The team went to Canon City and brought back their third straight victory, tho the win was not too impressive. The big Tiger’s held the Trojan’s ground game in check and only Hayward’s catches kept the offense rolling. The defense operated well and led by Hulse, Canfield, and Holt, held the Tiger to three first-downs and a touchdown. The team had gained confidence and looked tough to beat. With four injured first-stringers out, the Trojans still played top-notch football by downing Limon. Leading 6-0 at the half, the Trojans swamped Limon with four touchdowns to win 32-0. Third-string Rice scored twice, leading the offensive with Coates, Price, Beamer, and Yother. The game was profitable in that Coach Winningham was able to experiment and use many boys who had not seen action before. The underclassmen showed will and indicated a good football future in Las Animas. CURLEY BADGERS A BADGER L I M O N Sponsored by BENNETT’S GIFT SHOP mckenzies MUSIC BURTON MOVES IN FOR THE KILL Meeting an inspired Savage team the Trojans were able to eek out a 26-25 win at Lamar. A large homecoming crowd witnessed the thrilling game that saw Lamar leading 12-6 at halftime and the locals battling back with two touchdowns in the third quarter and the clincher in the fourth. It was the defensive work of Billings which turned the tide for the men of Troy. It was the fifth win for the Trojans. The big, experienced, and powerful Rocky Ford Meloneers proved too much for the injury-riddled BCHS Trojans and the team went down to their first defeat of the season. The big Meloneer line stopped our running offensive and Trojan mistakes and mis-cues contributed to the visitor's scores. Trailing 26-0 at the half, the BCHS boys held Rocky Ford to six points the second half and scored on a sixty yard pass interception by Ron Losey. Rocky Ford went on to win the league crown. F L O R E N C E HOLT MEANS BUSINESS The Trojans returned to winning ways in downing a scrappy Florence 13-2. A pass from Brooks to Can-field scored in the second scored and the home team went on to dominate the game. The defensive work of the line was good as Florence lost over 60 yards in running plays. Holt, Terboss, Edgett, Burton, and Canfield were the defensive stars of the game. Florence never threatened although they trapped Joe Brooks in the end zone for a safety. The Trojans defeated the highly favored Miners by a score of 20-6. It was a case of the Trinidad team making the yardage and the Trojans making the touchdowns. In fact statistics showed 18 first downs for Trinidad and £ for the Trojans. The team was very tough when the visitors threatened after long marches and the Trojans employed a tricky attack that caught the miners flattooted at times. The victory was gratifying in that it showed the fine team spirit of the Trojans paying off for a victory. TERBOSS REMOVES A MINER AS LOSEY SCORES. Playing the game of the year the Trojans blocked and tackled with precision and determination and were able to come from behind in the closing minutes to beat the Tigers 20-19. It was the big game for the Trojans and they came through in fine style. In commenting on the game Coach Winningham declared that he was unable to pick out individuals stars. It was a great Team victory. Although the Walsenberg Panthers failed to win a game in their league schedule, they almost upset die highly favored Trojans on our field in the last game of the season. It was a pass interception by Leo Hayward in the fourth quarter that enabled the Las Animas boys to come from behind to win 31-26. The win was especially gratifying for the nine seniors who were playing their last game. COATS, EDGETT, AND FIELD PLAY CATCH A CAT. In a sport that is gaining in popularity at Las.Animas, there were some fine records turned in last year. The Trojans qualified eight men for the state meet in Boulder last year. These men were Vandiver, shotput, Billings, pole vault and mile. Dale Curley, high jump, George Field, high hurdles, and the 880 relay team composed of Gillespie, Losey, Richards and Terboss. The Trojans won a Tri-angular meet with Manzanola and Swink, placed fifth in the Rocky Ford Invitational meet, and fourth in the Lamar Invitational. They also participated in the La Junta Relays and the league meet. Sponsored by BENT BUILDERS and JOE BROOKS A LITHOGRAPHED 7'€Uftcnr9H c(e YEARBOOK DALLAS • TEXAS LA JUNTA ,
