With an obviously green team. Coach Winningham tried various combinations before arriving at an all underclass back-field with four experienced Seniors in the line. The team showed a good scoring potential in many of their games, and played good football all season. The low point was their drubbing by the State Champion Manzanola Team and the high point was the walloping of the Lamar Savages. B.C.H.S. finished in a tie for fourth place and had a season record of five wins and five losses. With seventeen lettermen returning to action next year the football picture is indeed rosy. Still, the loss of the two all-conference men in Delbert Lusk and Max Wheeler plus Don Sears, Gene Christensen, Ralph Quarles, and Robert Quarles will be a hard blow to the team. Sponsored by F. H. T. SETCHFIELD Kansas City Life Insurance Although the B squad had a rather unimpressive won-lost record, which included one win, two ties, and four losses, the young Trojans gained much needed experience. They improved well and are expected to bolster next years varsity squad. Coach Darrel Hafling directed the team. A TEAM IS NO STRONGER THAN THE MEN ON THE BENCH Overall team strength certainly is determined by the kind of players that make up the substitutes. The fact that there were twenty-three men lettered on this year's squad shows that competition was keen for first string berths. Good team spirit means not just the spirit of the first eleven but of the whole squad. The Trojans showed the proper hustle and enthusiasm down to the last man. Sponsored by PRUETT THAXTON and CLARK WHEELER AND JANTZEN LOOK FOR LONGHORNS: GALLEGOS SCORES. In the first game of the season, the play of the Trojans was somewhat ragged but scrappy. Starting slow after throwing back three Springfield scoring threats the Bent County boys scored in the second quarter on a reverse by Gallegos. They iced the game in the last quarter on a six yard sprint by Losey. The defensive play of Wheeler was especially good. Bouncing back after the humiliating defeat by Manzanola, the Trojans showed their supporters that they were capable of playing a good brand of football by out playing the highly favored Tigers of Canon City. Five costly fumbles set up Tiger scores while Las Animas was winning the battle of statistics. Outgaining their opponents 202 yards to 148 yards, and 11—4 in first downs the Trojans showed that they would be tougher in the future. The line play was especially bruising with Christenson, Vandiver, and Hayward outstanding. HAYWARD, MARTINEZ, AND VANDIVER PUT STOPPER ON TIGER. FIRST OF THREE TOUCHDOWNS BY LOSEY. Showing an explosive offense for the first time of the season the Las Animas team ran roughshod over the Limon Badgers. Led by Ronald Losey the team found itself and broke away for many long gains. Ken Jantzen and Darrel Beamer did a good job quarterbacking the team and Dale Curley and Melvin Taylow playing fullback also sparked the offense. Vance Burton did a terrific job at defensive linebacker. Playing their best game of the season the Trojans stomped the Savages from Lamar in their first league game by a score of 38—0. The home team could do nothing wrong that night and the play in the line was very good. Led by Delbert Lusk, Max Wheeler, Tony Martinez, George Field, Leo Hayward, and Harry Vandiver, the forward wall was very tough both on offense and defense. They opened great holes for Losey, Beamer, Curley, and Gallegos to gallop through. It was a great team victory! L I M O N SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED ALL NIGHT: A SAVAGE STOPPED FOR NO GAIN. LUSK, MARTINEZ, AND VANDIVER MOVE IN FOR THE KILL. After leading 7—6 beginning the fourth quarter, the bubble burst and the Trojans found themselves at the short end of a 27—7 score. The team ran out of gas the final period and the hard-driving backs of the Meloneers were quick to take advantage of it. Playing below the form showed in the Lamar game, the local team couldn't open the holes in the tough Rocky Ford line. Our score came on an 80 yard interception by Losey. Playing a heads-up brand of ball the Trojans lost a heartbreaker to Florence who scored in the last minute of play on two long passes. The Trojans had come from behind in the last quarter by scoring two touchdowns and seemingly had victory on their grasp. But the Huskies connected on desperation passes and grabbed the game. It was a very well-played and exciting game that could have gone either way. R O C K Y F O R D CURLEY FINDS HOLE FOR 6 POINTS. SNOW-COVERED FIELD MADE THE GOING TOUGH FOR BOTH TEAMS. W A L S E N B U R G Playing the state class A Champions a tough game all the way. The Bent County boys gave a very good account of themselves throughout the game. The Trojans marched 97 yards on running plays late in the second quarter and were behind 13—6 at the half. This was the longest sustained drive of the season against the rugged Tiger line. Ken Jantzen, Ralph Quarles and Don Sears turned in great defensive performances. Using many second and third team players, the football team had an easy time with the Walsenburg Panthers. The game was somewhat ragged and Walsenburg proved to have some scrappy young players. The Trojans were penalized a lot because of over anxious green players who were getting some needed game experience. The game was beneficial because the coach was able to use so many players. LOSEY IS TOUCHDOWN BOUND. BEAMER READY TO SCALP A SAVAGE. Although making many mistakes throughout the season the Trojans learned a lot of football and were a tough ball club at the end of the season. They played an entertaining brand of ball and never gave up. The team was enthusiastically supported by the downtown quarterback club who stayed with them in their ups and downs throughout the season. The club gave the team its annual banquet at the Palace Hotel at which time Coach John Baker of Denver University was the main speaker. CANFIELD GETS GOOD PROTECTION. AN EXAMPLE OF TROIAN TEAM WORK. The banquet was favored by the presence of all mothers of the team members who had been invited by the A-Club of the high school. The season of 1951 can be considered a highly successful year. Sponsored by WARREN GROCERY and JOE BROOKS, Standard Oil Agent. Left to right: Garvey Rodriguez, Kenny Jantzen, Ronny Losey, Dale Curley, Tony Martinez, Melvin Taylor, Max Wheeler, Tom Cragen, Harold Canfield, Leo Hayward, Coach Clayton Grey. With some forty-five reporting for the first basketball practice of 1951-52, the Trojans opened a 16-game schedule. Three returning lettermen were Max Wheeler, Kenny Jantzen and Tony Martinez. The Trojans elected Max Wheeler to captain them through the season. Las Animas 47 Las Animas 41 Las Animas.......... 43 Las Animas Las Animas ...
