if gi' Retirin Teachers Mrs Sylvxa Kylen came to Benson Polytechmc School m 1937 after teachmg at Grant Hrgh Mrs Kylen started out at Benson by teachmg math and after she completed an M A degree rn Econo-fnrcs she swrtched to socral studtes Mrs Kylen rs retrrrng rn her 16th year as a coun sellor the fourth as Head Counsellor At the end of the school year she wtll be lookmg forward to lrvrng near the water at Seavrew, Washrngton wrth her husband After a brref rest there, they both plan to travel lv Mr Roy Stephens After 587 wears of servrce to the Portland school sys tem Roy Stewens retrred Three years after startrng at Benson Stevens helped burld KFIF radro statron Later the statrons call letters were changed to KBPS when the school system took over the statron for broadcastrng educatronal programs to stu dents rn other schools He was also the advrsor for the radro club and was the orrprnator of the slrde rule classes at Benson He rs xlso well remembered hy ex Bensonrtes who took phxsrcs courses under hrm In connection wrth thrs he helped burld thc electrrc drstrrbutron panel rn hrs old room to facrlrtate better physrcs courses whrch would enable students to engage rn more exactrng proyects Stesens attended Ranrer Oregon Hrgh School and the L of O where he recened hrs physrcs degree Mrs Sylvia Kylen Mrs Kylen has always been well lrked by both the ad mmrstratron and the students and she rn turn has been lmpressed by the steadrly rncreasmg caltber of the Benson students She feels that the boys are more serrous mrnded both their studies and thexr future work now than they were a few years ago Davrd Laney one ot Bensons mechanrcal drawrng teachers rs retrrrng rn june of 1959 Laney has been teachrng mechanrcal drawmg at Benson smce September of 1921 He has always taught rn room 28 except for two years durrng the war when he was Drrecfor of Extended Dax Care and four years when he was rn room Y Laney has been Presrdcnt ot the Teacher s Assocratron faculty advrsor for the Camera Club and he used to be rn charge of the candy machrnes rn the burldrng Many changes have taken place srnce Laney frrst came to Benson Most rmportant ot the changes were the addr non of the present audrtorrum gymnasrum and cafeterra The old audrtorrum and cafe-terra occupred the present prrnt shop area Mr Laney has always taught Mechanrcal Drawmg but rn recent years he has also taught advanced drawrng, whrch rncluded sheet metal machrne and arrcraft draftmg He also has handled EE classes for four years Mr Davrd Laney
