E Benson's teachers also joined in the Centenn competition as Mr. Richards, Mr. Andersen a Mr. White all tied for first place in the mei division while Mrs. Gordon was awarded baseball bat for her Centennial costume. 'GLI- aff' Gary Ogle 'ix 421 x lx In Memoriam Gary Ogle, a well-known, well-liked Senior, met with a fatal automobile accident during Spring vacation. During his four years at Benson, Gary was a major in Aviation. Mr. Nichols, Aviation instructor, states that Gary was a hard worker, who usually completed what he set out to do. Gary was a member of the Headers of Portland, a hot rod club formed in Portland to promote safety on the road. Gary was noted for having a safe and well- kept car. Per is Benson's foreign exchange student from Norway. He has been living with the Marshall Malden Family. At Benson, Per has maintained a 3.8 ever- age, and is number one man on the Benson Tennis Team. He is also an accomplished skier, winning the junior division expert class in the Oregon Centennial Ski Meet at Mt. Hood. We have enjoyed having Per at Benson this year, and all of us wish him the best of luck in the future. Out of six games played the young Techmen won five and lost one. The only loss was to the baby Madison 11 by 1 point. The freshmen displayed a lot of spirit, and should furnish many fine football players for future varsity teams. Coach Dick Gray Benson is very proud of its basketball coach M Dick Gray Mr Gray came to Benson from Oregon State College where he graduated in 1951 Since that time he has coached many boys in the fundamentals and fine points of basketball as well as the sense of fair play Mr Gray is respected by the players and the coaches of other P I L teams as well as by his own boys Captain Bob Woodle of this years squad says this about Mr Gray I have only the deepest respect for Mr Gray as a coach as a teacher and a gentleman I only wish we could have performed better this year to make up for all of the effort Mr Gray put forth for us The Bluep mt staff salutes Mr Gray for the hard work and time he devotes to Benson basketball I s our belief that with a little desire and hustle by the play ers next year could be another banner year for Mr Gray and the Benson hoopsters vxnsrrv STANDINGS JEFFERSON FRANKLIN CLEVE LAND MADISON WILSON BENSON ROOSEVELT LINCOLN WASHINGTON VARSITY BASKETBALL The Benson Tech hoopsters had a so-so year. Overall, their record was 9 wins against 12 defeats. Benson floored a fairly young team in a rather tough PIL. Coach Gray's squad showed flases of brilliancy, but lack of consistency seemed to be the downfall. The Engineers were led for the second year in a row by All City guard Bob Woodle. Woodle averaged 15.6 points pr game for 40 games spanning two sea- sons. Other stellar performances were turned in by Bob Lytle and Allen Brooks. Mike Bye and Rudy Cunningham contributed well to the Tech cause also. Bright spots for next year will be seen in the return of 6'8 Bob Edeline, 6'4 Steve Muir, and 6'3 Rudy Cunningham. In the backcourt will be Dwight Lyons, who showed very good promise, Biily Young, and Charales White. In all, 10 men will be retum- ing next year, plus the addition of some fine J.V. graduates. The blueprint staff salutes this year's team for a fine effort, and wishes the 1959- 60 squad the best of luck. I . ,,, BENSON VS. CLEVELAND The Cleveland Indians barely edged out a 72- 68 victory agains the Techmen in their second encounter. The tall Indians did not have an easy time in disposing the scrappy Techmen. The Tribe held slender 2 point margins at the end of the first two quarters. Then the Indians pulled out to what seemd to be a safe lead, 57-46, but the Graymen fought back to within one point be- fore a basket and free throw decided the con- test. The two Bobs, Lytle and Woodle hit 15 points apiece for the Engineers. BENSON VS. VVILSON VVilson avenged an earlier defeat to the Tech- men by downing the visiting Engineers 64-48. Wilson led at all quarter stops in posting their victory. Dwight Lyons. filling in for 'injured Bob VVoodle, canned 9 points for the Techmen and Rudy Vunningham followed with 8. Hugh Weber hit 18 for XVilson. BENSON VS. GRANT The quick Grant Generals jumped out into a commanding lead from the very start. and never reliquished it. By halftime. the count stood 41- 25. Grant increased their advantage in each quarter until the final gun sounded. The final was Grant 76---Benson 54. Bob VVoodle. having his best night of the year tallied 25 for the Engineers. .lim Lemery topped the General five witli 16 points. S BENSON VS. JEFFERSON The Techmen faced their second tough test in a week and fell at the hands of the league leading Jefferson Democrats 58-42. Jefferson held forth at all quarter stops, but held only a narrow four point lead at halftime, 29-25. The third quarter proved the difference, as the Demo's forged into a commanding 46-31 lead. Bob Woodle topped the Tech scoring with 19 points. Terry Baker garnered 23 for the victorious Jeff quint. 141 BENSON VS. CLEVELAND The Cleveland Indians edged the Techmen 54-48 in a tight contest at the new Tribe gym. The Engineers started out very well with an 8-O lead. Cleveland jumped back within one, 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. Benson held forth in the next two quarters, but faltered in the stretch drive to lose their first PIL contest. Bob Woodle again led the Tech cause with 17 points, backed up by Allen Brooks with 13 counters. BENSON VS. GRANT Grant, the number one ranked team in the state, dropped the Techmen 58-43 on the Tech floor. The game was a matter of too many tall Grantonians. The Engineers edged out to a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter, but that was the extent of the Tech drive. At halftime the score stood 33-22 Grant. Jim Lemery led the Grant attack with 16, while Woodle dropped in 20 for the Techmen. BENSON VS. JEFFERSON The Graymen faced another rugged opponent in the Democrats of Jefferson, and ended up on the short end of a 64-42 score. The game was a case of too much Baker on the inside and Nickel- berry on the outside for Jefferson. All State Baker dropped in 22 points. Benson was on the short end at every quarter stop. The two Bob's, Woodle and Lytle dropped in a dozen a piece for the Engineers. BENSON VS. MADISON The Benson Techmen made a strong bid for their third league victory, but were repelled by an improved Madison quint. The Techmen started slow, falling behind 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. However, near the end of the game the Graymen made a determined bid to overtake the Senators, but time ran out. Woodle and Brooks led the Engineers with 18 and 10. Jack Lawrence tallied 18 for the Senators. BENSON VS. WASHINGTON The Tech slump continued for another game, as they fell at the hands of Washington 59-49. The Colonials blazed out to a 19-8 lead at the end of 8 minutes, and carried a 27-20 halftime bulge. Art Pierce caught fire for the Cols by dropping in 16 points in the second half to preserve the Colonial lead. Woodle and Lytle topped Tech scoring with 14 and 10. BENSON VS. FRANKLIN Despite a valiant try, the Techmen receipted for their fifth loss against the tall Quakers. Benson led off to a 12-8 lead in the opening stanza, but fell behind 25-24 at half. Franklin held a slight edge through the remainder of the game and pulled out in the final minutes. Al Brooks canned 23 points for Tech, while Berg- strom dropped through 22 points for Franklin. BENSON VS. LINCOLN The Benson Tech offense finally hit high gear, as the Lincoln Cardinals fell 66-38. There was no doubt about the outcome as Tech pulled out to a 19-5 first quarter lead. This lead was in- creased to 35-17 at halftime. Mike Bye con- tributed 16 Tech points in the first half. The Benson reserves saw plenty of action also, and continued to outpoint the undermanned Cards. Mike Bye finished the contest with 20 counters, followed by Bob Woodle with 16. Ralph Marke- witz tallied half of Lincoln's points, 19. BENSON VS. ROOSEVELT The Engineers made it two in a row over Roosevelt by downing the Teddies 59-55. Tech jumped out quickly to a 20-12 advantage at first quarter's end, but Roosevelt squared matters 29 all at halftime. The contest see-sawed until the final minute, when Tech edged out to its final advantage. Bob Lytle dropped in 16 and Woodle hit for 13 for the Techmen. Olsen and Shrunk garnered 20 and 19 respectively. BENSON VS. MADISON The Engineers finally pulled out an upset win at the hands of Madison, 49-46. Tech screamed out into a 9-0 lead and held forth at first quarter's end 19-10. This nine point advantage lasted until the start of the fourth quarter when Madi- son took the lead 36-34. Benson roared back, though, and were leading 49-46 at the final horn. Woodle dropped through 15 counters for Tech, while Hattenhauer and Holmes hit 14 apiece for the visitors. The Engineers gunned out into a sizable 17-6 first quarter lead, and carried a 33-12 halftime advantage. Tech subs saw a lot of action in the last half, Bob Woodle re- tired at the end of the third quarter with game scoring honors at 17. Junior Dwight Lyons pumped in 10 counters. BENSON VS. FRANKLIN The Franklin Quakers kept their tourney hopes alive by dropping the Engineers 62--19. Bensoirs hopes were drubbed in the first quarter, as Franklin jumped out to a 23-3 lead. Tech whittled away at this lead. but could not over- come the deficit. Bob VVoodle dropped through 12 points. followed by Cunningham and Bye with 11 apiece. Jerry Bergstrom hit a PIL season high of 39 for the Quakers. BENSON VS. LINFOLN Benson closed the 1959-59 hoop campaign by dumping the Lincoln Cards 46-33. Jim Max- well, a consistent winner in javelin, should go a long way towards improving his own city duel meet record of 184' 3 . Most of the sprinting will be done by Paul Wolfe, Allen Brooks, and Joshua Polk. Because of the many retuming lettermen, and a lot of good runners coming up from the J.V.'s Coach Simmons can look for- ward to a good season next year.
