Afte completing his grammar-school education, he moved to Portland witl his family in 1907. Here, he enrolled in the old Portland Trade Schoc where he was a member of the Band and Baseball team. ln 1911 hi was graduated as a cabinet-maker in the first class to receive diploma from the school. From early boyhood, Mr. Kuhns had always been interested ii working with wood, and summer vacations found him employed il local furniture factories, or building houses with an uncle, a contractor The year followinggraduation, he joined the Portland Trade Schoc faculty as an apprentice teacher. With the exception of a year as 1 manual-training instruction at Mount Tabor School, he has been R member of the Benson Faculty throughout his entire teaching career On June 10, 1918, he enlisted in the Navy where he served abou two-and one-half years, being discharged with rating of Carp. Matt 1st. cl. ln his 44 years of teaching, many thousands of studen-ts havl passed through Mr. Kuhns' classes, and he seldom fails to recognizt each one and call him by name. Mr. Kuhns married o Benson English teacher, Lucille Atchison, il 1922. They have one son, David, who was graduated from Benson il 1945. Two young grandchildren promise to keep life from becoming too boring. Retirement plans include more time for a gardening hobby as wel as frequent visits to Kuhns' Nest, the summer cottage at Neskowil Beach. fNote: It is only a stone's-throw from a beautiful golf course!
