RAY MEYER Co-editor kffilk Your Poly Tech was edited by Philip Carrell and Ray Meyer, who were assisted by a small but active staff. The sports section was edited by Darrell Erickson, who also helped a great deal on the remainder of the book. Art work, including the smart looking separation pages, was done by Sam Lee. Franklin Quan did a fine iob selling advertising and by doing so greatly reduced the price of your yearbook. The large amount of photography was ably handled by Philip Carrell, Jack Wetzel, Myrton Nelson, Dennis Johnson and Kris Jensen. The Poly Tech sales were cared for by Darrell Erickson and Ray Meyer. Jim Kamphouse and Richard Betts also helped sell advertising and took care of the financial dealings of the book. We greatly appreciate the fine assistance given to us by Mr. George Hysmith, our advisor, and Mr. Donald Wilkinson, the print shop instructor. To Ryder Printing Company, Mr. Howard Corning, your layout artist, and Gladys Gilbert Studio, our senior class photographer we extend our thanks for their wonderful cooperation in making this year's Poly Tech a success. ts' rym POLY TECH TAFI: h 3 T' if f CZ DARRELL ERICKSON Sports Editor QAM Ll' FRANKLIN QUAN Artust Advertising Manager 'ig 559' i. Performances for school assemblies, P.T.A.'s, service clubs, lodges, and other schools and colleges were all listed among their accomplishments. All in all, a total of almost thiirty appearances were made, highlighted by the annual All-City Choral Festival at the Civic Auditorium. More than 50,000 people will have been audience to our outstanding Ambassadors of Goodwill by the close of school this year. The Men of Note, our double quartet, have made an excellent name for Benson and themselves during the year by giving their services to entertain throughout the city. Benson I2 The Techmen showed a great improvement over their previous play in this game. The first quarter of the game was played in the prep iamboree. The Democrats were a preseason favorite before this game. The Mechanics could have made a win out of this game with a little more time at either the close of the first half or the end of the game. The big Tech line bewildered the Jefferson backs the whole second half by time and again smashing through for hard tackles. Pazeotopoulus being tackled after a short gain in opener played at Kelso. Grant I4 . . . Benson 0 The Generals of Grant handed the Mechanics their first setback of the young season in the second league game. The fast G-Men grabbed an early lead and the Techmen were unable to overcome the fourteen point lead. Even by playing hard, fast football the Mechanics couldn't score. Benson later was awarded this game by forfeiture when it was discovered that Grant used an ineligible player in the tilt. Washington 12 . . . Benson 6 This garne was undoubtedly the poorest exhibition of Tech football throughout the entire season. The Colonials scored on a pass interference play and a blocked kick. The Techrnen capitalized on a long run to chalk up their six points. The Colonials were tirecl up tor this game and caught the confident Techrnen oft balance. George Bardsley driving over for a touchdown against Lincoln in Benson's first win. Benson 20. . . Lincoln 0 The Techinen came back in this garne to show they .were not asleeo by uni.e-ling a stunning grouncl and aerial attack The Dig, tough Benson li-'ie sniashecl fnrougl the Lincoln defense to smother Cardinal ball carriers throughout true ganrie i'v7ean.while Tecir. hacks .were rornping for large gains through the smaller Lincoln fzetense. This gafrie proved Benson: ottensive power. Benson 21 . . . Roosevelt 6 Benson's hard running backs and charging line again proved to be the difference in this game. The Techmen had their own way as they drove for a touchdown on the first series of downs, The rest of the game was more of the same as the Mechanics completely dominated the scoring. Benson's two All-City players, Ed Grenier and George Bardsley, both proved their worth by playing a terrific ball game. This tilt proved to be an easy one for the high-riding Techmen, Jimmy Precious Williams eats up yardage through the Cleveland defense. Cleveland 24 . . . Benson I3 The Indians surprised the Tech squad by scoring twenty-four points in the first half. The Indians displayed a determined ground and air attack, but it was stalled in the second half as the Techmen came to life and scored thirteen points, After the Mechanics got rolling they outplayed the lndians, but time was too short for the Techmen to surpass the point bulge Cleveland had built up. Marshfield 6 The fired up Mechanics traveled to Coos Bay to play the highly favored Marshfield eleven in the semi-finals and upset them l3 to 6. The Techmen, fresh from their overwhelming victory over The Dalles, went on the field to completely outplay the over-confident Pirates. The Techmen were sparked in this game by little George Bardsley who played a great game on both offense and defense. Bob Clark scored the first Tech touchdown on a quarterback sneak from the 8 yard line, late in the first quarter. Ed Grenier calmly split the uprights with the conversion kick. George Bardsley scored the other T.D. on an end run from the Pirate 22 yard line. Grenier failed to kick the extra point. ln the second half with less than 4 minutes played, Tom Crabtree, Marshfield's All-State nominee, scored the Pirates' only touchdown. The Mechanics were looking better with every game in the playoffs. yr fy , , i , I ,a ff if af qi 'Q MW 9 wi' Q ff Af' 1 2: Q aff- if Q J W , Q fy if ' 2 ,Q Om Q5 Q' 3 ' swf. . lx. x Q QW is 'E +e,M , B. When the team was a few points behind, often it was Bob who pulled the game out of the fire with his will to win Bob Clark was one of the reasons for Benson's second place finish this year and he well deserved his selection on the IQ53 All-City team. Other infielders are Billy Bullet Hill- Ken Johnson a transfer- John James first baseman' and Bob Jacobson. Bensons pitching staff could be a league winner if the Mechanics can hold up the hitting department. Pitchers are Jack Hall Dick Fiske Dennis McCauley Dick Brug and two sophomores Gary Johnson and Dick McQueen. Dick Fiske and Jack Hall are the probable starters. The rest of the staff will see action in relief roles. The outfield is the darkest picture for the coach. So far they haven't been hitting up to expectations. They probably will improve as the season progresses. Jack Mayer, Dick Wolfe, Don Roberts, Al Sovereign and Tom Low make up the outfield. The Techmen may prove to be a darkhorse in this year's title chase. If they do come through in all departments as they should, our Mechanics could be the team to beat in the race this year. Competitive swimming has been a high school sport for only six years in Portland. In this time they have made dual meets, at which each high school challenges another until every school has competed with each other. There also is a city meet for the individual honors. The boys and girls receive ribbons for this meet. Then on to state, at which all the high schools that wish to, may compete. Medals are given as individual honors and trophies for l, 2 and 3 teams. Graduating members of the team are: Larry Anthony, Breaststroker, Grant Fuller, Backstroker. Other team members are: Walt Wilks, team captain, Backstroker, Breaststroker, and Freestyler, Dick Fisher, Freestyler, Ed Huston, Freestyler, Back- stroker, and Breaststroker, Don Grace, Freestyler, Don Thorneycroft, Freestyler and Diver, John Anderson, Freestyler, Dick Vebreese, Freestyler, Kenny Croal, Backstroker, and Bruce Wadsworth, Breaststroker.
