SENIOR CLA SS PLAY The night of Friday, November l5, marked the date of the senior theatrical production, VVhat a Life. The play, a three-act comedy, was one of the most hilarious ever to be staged and probably one of the most modern, since it had hardly made its debut on Broadway more than a year before. In great part the success of the play is attributed to Mrs. Doris Smith and Miss Lydia Pliter, under whose direction the cast was trained. What a Life depicts the daily occurrences in the life of Henry Aldrich, the typical problem child of Central High School. Henry is one of those fellows which every school has. He isn't dumb, but merely trying to enjoy life with the least effort. Henry by some quirk of fate can never get along in school, not of his own fault, but, to top his mournful plight, he is always being made the goat by a fellow student, George Bigelow. Henry, however, has one faithful friend whom he can trust, his school-day sweetheart, Barbara Pearson, who is always trying to keep Henry out of trouble. The play centers itself around the disappearance of the school band instru- ments, and immediately Henry is suspected. The instruments are finally found in a pawn shop by Mr. Ferguson, a small town super-sleuth, and his unwelcom- ed assistant, Miss Wheeler. After admitting his guilt in the cheating which occurred during a test, Henry will not admit the theft of the band instruments. The cheating in the exam is destined to cause a split in the school office, and as a result Mr. Nelson, the assistant principal, takes sides with Henry, while Mr. Bradley, the principal, takes the part of George Bigelow. Mrs. Aldrich through- out the entire play will not believe that her son is guilty of these charges, but rather her only interest is to have Henry go to Princeton at a time when he borders on going to 'the reform school. The case is finally cleared, and George Bigelow is proven guilty of stealing the school band instruments in order that he might buy a tuxedo. Henry as a typical hero wins the girl of his dreams, Barbara Pearson, with whom he gets Recognition should here be given to Phil Young, manager of the stage crew in whose charge was all scenery and lighting. l24l a date to the school dance. I Each Ianuary there comes to Benson a new class of freshmen, as consistent as the return of the spring. Members of this graduating class entered in the spring of 1937 and the spring of 1938. Like every class coming into the school their interests variedg some were interested in the shops, some in the courses, some in the sports, and others had no interests. CLASS HISTORY F During their stay they progressed from freshman to sophomore and then to junior and finally to the rank of the senior. On the twenty-seventh of March, 1940, the class was organized under the direction of Mr. Cleveland, and the advisers, Miss Leon and Mr. Boline, were announced. The class immediately took over its duties and a short time later had its officers as follows: President ................ .... I ack Iernander Vice-President .... ....... W illiam Gray Treasurer .....,. .... A ugustine Amato Secretary ......,,.,,,...,, ....,. R obert Libby Poly Tech Editor ........ ...... U go Raglione Sergeant-at-arrns ,,,,,,,,,..,,,,.,,,,...,.,,,....,,.,,,,......,,......... Gilbert Nielsen Capping the spring term activities, the class in traditional style gave a party for the outgoing seniors of Iune. The party consisted of an auditorium program, refreshments, a moving picture, and a dance. From all appearances the party was a huge success. The class began its work anew with the arrival of the fall semester and immediately elected Dore' Studios as official photographer of the class and Crown Engravers as the official class engraver. Soon after the beginning of the fall term the boys in the class belonging to the National Guard were called upon to begin a two-year period of training and were forced to leave school. Twelve members of the class were in this group. Also in line with this National Defense movement the naval reserves were made ready to leave, but none of these left until the latter part of No- vember. The senior play, What a Life, was given on the night of November 15 be- fore a crowd of thirteen hundred people. Keller, Kendall, R. Phillips, Rankin, Michel, Sexton, Iohnstone I l 41 l I Varsity Football ' For the second time in Benson history the Benson football team has finished a season in the top position. Once before the Benson eleven captured a football title in 1928, under the coaching of Clarence Bell. This year's championship, however, is shared with two other top flight teams-Grant and Iefferson. The tieing of the three teams in this way has caused a great deal of confusion, since never before in Portland interscholastic history has a three-way tie such as this occurred, and therefore, no provision had been made to find which team should be champion under such a condi- tion as this. From the standpoint of scores and playing, Benson probably has more reason than any team of the league to rule the l94O football season in that they were not scored upon except by Iefferson, and they were not beaten as decisively as any other team in the league. A At the beginning of the l94O season the promises of a good team were the smallest for some time, since we had but five returning lettermen, Pettit, Stan- gel, Gray, Holden, and Smith, and the team as a whole was the lightest in a period of eight years, their average weight being only one hundred and sixty- seven pounds. The team proved the old saying that a football player must be big and dumb was grossly incorrect, for by the time a few games were played, it was easy to see this squad made up for its lack of beef in its surplus of brain. lt is to this ability of the team to think clearly under all conditions and at all times that Coach Marineau feels in great part was re- sponsible for their success. Of the games this year the Benson-lefferson battle was probably the hardest fought for many definite reasons. lefferson had lost to Grant the week before, and only by our defeat could they hope to tie for the league title. We had nev- er been scored upon, while lei-ferson had been trounced by a 12 to O beating at the hands of Grant. The outcome of this game proved to be our only defeat, but in its playing was displayed the true spirit of our team, who in the final moments of play with the score 20 to 7 against them, pushed back the letter- son machine to score another touchdown, the game ending 20-l3.. Franklin High, of the schools we defeated, was probably the hardest to score on and win over. Throughout the four quarters of the game it was a toss-up battle, and only by virtue of a single touchdown, scored by Pettit over the Quaker weak side, were we able to win. This game showed very convincingly that all the ballyhoo which had been given Benson as a one-man team was not true, for in this game it was not the much-feared Pettit who proved the real threat, but rather Don Colohan with his continuous center plunges which sparked the Benson attack. Grant, although they had been picked by Eldon lenne as the best team in the league, was not able to prove itself worthy of this title in any way against Benson, and this contest probably proved to be one of Benson s easiest wins l42l Varsity Football of the season. The Grant-Benson tussle was staged on the much-coveted Thanksgiving Day bill and, most likely, destroyed all doubt in anyone's mind as to why Benson ranked as they did. The Benson team throughout the entire confest had the game well in hand, and at no time was worried by the Gen- era s. rr? Each year some one boy on the team seems to show up above his fellow mates. This year that one boy was lames Pettit, who combined his speed, stamina, fast thinking, and all-round football playing to be the answer to any coach's dream, and the outstanding player of the Portland league. lim acted as team captain and was the league high scorer and fastest man. An example of the star's speed may be had from his seventy-yard run against Washington for the only touchdown of that game. With Pettit should be classed Bill Gray, the Mechanic center, who played a great game and also called the defensive signals. Both of these boys undoubtedly will be on the all-city team. Credit goes to Ben Stangel, end, who called the offensive signals, and to Don Colohan, the back-field power driver. The above mentioned boys may have sparked a little more brilliantly than the rest, but the whole team was a championship club right down to the lowest water-boy, for no one man is responsible for the doings of any team. It is often the case that one fellow clears the way for the oncoming runner who receives all the recognition, but without good blocking, the ball carrier would be nailed. So to the whole team our hats are off for a great job well done. As a reward for their playing and for their co-championship, the Tech eleven was chosen to play against the all-city all-stars in the annual milk fund game. The result of this game was not available at the time this was written. The coaching staff this year consisted of Lefty Marineau, who is head coach, and Chuck Mucha, former All-American, who was the line coach. The results which these men attained show what unceasing effort and regular practice may result in. The coaches did a swell job. GAME RESULTS Benson 7 i .,., ,.,,,,,,,,,..,,..........,,..... . .. IUNIGR FOOTBALL For the first time in years the lunior team did not complete the season in the first division. Their failure to win a game is attributed to the greenness of the entire squad. Nevertheless throughout the duration of the season they retained their excellent squad spirit and Willingness to dig in and learn. Fortunately injury did not take a high toll. Mr. Porter stated that his team was encountering older and more experienced boys consequently had little winning success during the season. Under the very capable guidance of Mr. Drynan, the Benson cross country team ended second in the city. At the first part of the season two meets were scheduled, the first being with Milwaukie, which Benson lost by a score of 21 to 36. Then they showed that they were true athletes by winning from Commerce by a score of 24 to 31. ln their first Hill Military meet, Benson competed against Iefferson and Roosevelt, and won by a score of 32, to Iefferson's 38 and Roosevelt's 48. Then, in the three-way meet between Grant, Commerce, and Benson, the Mechanics were forced to bow to the more experienced Generals. ln the all-city cross country meet, in which all high schools of Portland participate, Benson again went down to defeat before the Grant Generals, finally Corning in with second place. Benson placed sixth in the mass northwest meet held in November. The high point man on this year's team was Stewart Norene. l-le was fol- lowed by Carter and Fisher. f46l .gl qyfldverdsing I a I1 u a I y ir ir 'ki' ir ir ir 'Ir tit 'lr if if J' MG11,UfHCf1lTOT.9 of Qnami aefu 'n Jfaweferf' JANUARY 19441 CLASS PINS 4 OFFICIAL BENSON RING AND CLUB PINS Jr. Craftsmen Oycr-Un-Gon International Camera Club Radio Club - Minutemen Tech Pep Dramatic- Cavaliers Type-Hi B.
