Yet even more important, we appreciate the spiritual guidance which he administered to each of us in our time of need. With these thoughts in mind, we proudly dedi- JL cate this volume of TATLER to our MR. Even when the cards were against him, he never failed to play the winning hand. His overpowering drive to be one of us made us love and respect him. You will carry with you many happy memories jberja ps S some not so happy. However, we do sincerely hope that you will carry with you certain simple yet basic ( -fapts . --v -N _ of life: 1. Effort and application are required in order to achieve anything of value. Your country does not owe you a living. If you expect to be citizens of any worth, continued effort and application will be required. 2. Honor and Integrity are some of the eternal values. In our efforts to possess the material things of life, let us never lose sight of the fact that your Honor and Integrity will stand you in good stead after all the material things of life have vanished. 3. Continued training wherever possible will help to make you a more useful and productive citizen. It is our sincere hope that many of you will realize that in this complicated world of ours today that training beyond the high school will be of great value. Your high school diploma should be a spring-board from which you may go forward to greater success. 4. Your continued devotion to the American Way of Life, where the dignity and worth of the individual is supreme, will be a worthy goal for you to pursue. America needs young men and women truly devoted to the great ideals of our founding fathers. I hope that you will always strive to make government the servant of the people and not their master. Along with his smile and personality, he has the desire and the ability to learn. Knowing this, his fellow classmates voted him Most Intellectual of their senior class. Reggie has proved, by maintaining an above average in grades throughout his high school career, that he can hold this superlative position. He has been accepted by North Carolina State College, which he plans to attend in order to study veterinarian medicine. Reggie, during his high school career, has participated in many different activities and has had many responsibilities. He was in the Library Club and served as the vice-president of his class during his sophomore year. During his junior year, he played a very active part in the Junior play and served as secretary of his class. During the summer separating his junior and senior years, he represented our school while attending Boys ' State. During his senior year, he served as the secretary of the Key Club and on the annual staff. He was also a very active worker on the school paper. We ' re sure that Reggie will have great success in life and that he will work to accomplish everything he tries to do. faculty elects outstanding BRENDA NEIGHBOURS The class of 1964 wouldn ' t have been the same if it had not had among its members that mischievous, intellectual, and dy- namic gal— Brenda Neighbours. Beginning with the ninth grade, Brenda participated in many activities and worked for the benefit of Benson High School; she was a member of the science club, the F.T.A. , and the dramatics club. During the same year, she also debated and played basket- ball. In her sophomore year, Brenda continued some of these activi- ties and added others. At the close of the year, she was tapped into the Beta Club; she also served as a waitress at the Junior- Senior Prom. In her junior year, Brenda was a member of the play cast and served as Co-Chief marshal. In her final year of high school, she was chosen the Best-All-Round girl by the graduating class. Brenda has received many other honors during high school. She attended the scholarship banquet held each year for the top six students in each class. She has received several medals given each year at the commencement exercises to students who show outstanding ability in their school work. She also received a citizenship award her sophomore year. After graduation Brenda plans to attend either the University of North Carolina at Greensboro or East Carolina College where she will study biology. Benson High School has greatly benefited from Brenda ' s hearty participation in its activities; her classmates will always remember her and are proud to have such an outstanding student among them. 32 Semer«5 Jor recognition STACY LEE A young man who has proved himself worthy of the title of outstanding is Stacy Lee. Stacy came to Benson from Dunn, where he had the honor of serving on the Student Council his sophomore year. Since he has been attending Benson, he has par- ticipated in two sports— baseball and football. His achievements in the field of athletics have been rewarded with a letter and membership in the Monogram Club. Stacy served on the Citizen- ship Council and also participated in the Junior Play his junior year. In his senior year, he served as class president and was elected a superlative. In addition to all these activities this out- standing student has been able to maintain above average grades. Stacy ' s personality and intelligence have wonhim many friends during the two years he has been here. We, the senior class, know that Stacy ' s many qualities will make him a great success in future years. How can he miss? JUDY ADAMS Most Intellectual is what Judy Adams was voted by her class- mates and we say rightly so. For during her high school years, she has maintained a high scholastic average. As a sophomore, Judy was tapped into the Beta Club and served as a waitress at the Junior-Senior Prom. Her junior year, she acted as co-chief marshal at commencement exercises. For the past two years, she has attended the Scholarship Banquet. For Judy ' s outstanding work in math, she was selected to attend a summer Mathematics Seminar at the University of North Carolina at Raleigh. It was sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Judy ' s high school years have been anything but dull! As a sophomore, she served as the Future Homemakers of America secretary and is presently serving as the chapter ' s president. Because of her keen interest in F.H.A., she is working on her state Home- maker ' s Degree. Judy also debated during her sophomore year. She participated in the Future Teachers of America and served as the president her junior year. She served as the class secretary both her sophomore and senior years. In the junior play, she played a leading role. She was a Candystriper at Johnston Memorial Hospital her junior year. She has also done an excellent job as the TATLER editor. Throughout high school, Judy has been an avid fan of the Phantoms and has participated in several activities. Judy was selected as a cheerleader her senior year. To improve her cheering ability, she attended Camp Pla-Mor one summer. She also served as girls ' basketball manager as a junior. Judy was chosen Home- coming Queen her freshman year. Following graduation, Judy plans to attend Campbell College and major in mathematics. We are sure Judy will be a success at whatever she undertakes. LINDA JONES A friendly smile, a charming personality, and good looks de- scribe one of the most outstanding students in our class— Linda Jones. Linda has attained a high scholastic standing and has been in the Beta Club since her sophomore year. Her high grades en- abled her to be a marshal, a waitress at the junior and senior banquet, and to attend the scholastic banquet for two years. Much of Linda ' s time is accupied by studying, but she still finds time for outside activities as well as several clubs. During her junior year, Linda enjoyed being a candystriper at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She served as secretary oftheF.T.A. her junior year. She was also county secretary of the F.H. A. and historian of the local chapter her freshman and sophomore years. Since Linda is an enthusiastic cheerleader, she attended the cheerleading camp at Windy Hill Beach, South Carolina, in order to learn ways to encourage more school spirit. Following graduation Linda plans to enter East Carolina College at Greenville, North Carolina, and study psychology. We are proud to have such an outstanding classmate, and we wish her the best of luck in everything she does . SUZANNE BENTON A winning smile and a charming personality all describe Suzanne Benton. She ' s a 5 foot 2 inch package of perpetual motion. During her high school career she has taken on more activities than one person can hardly handle and keep an above ninety average. Suzanne was extremely busy her freshman year: she be- came a member of the Junior Science Club, was elected to the Citizenship Council, and sang with the Glee Club. She also joined the Future Homemakers of America. Suzanne ' s sophomore year began by her being elected president of the class. After winning the local World Peace Speaking Con- test, she was given the opportunity to go to New York to the United Nations building. She went and really enjoyed the trip. Winning the contest enabled her to attend the Scholastic Banquet given each year for the top six students in each class. She was tapped into the Beta Club as a sophomore and became its secretary her senior year. Suzanne was chosen to play one of the parts in the junior class play. During her sophomore, junior, and senior years she was in the Homecoming Court. During the summer after her junior year she attended Girls ' State in Greensboro for a week. The senior year is always the busiest and Suzanne can give many reasons why. She was elected to the position of class treas- urer. Acting as Business Manager, Suzanne is working hard on the annual. After playing basketball all four years she was selected as Most Athletic for the senior class. Susie ' s outside interests are also keeping her busy. This past summer she attended the Annual Conference Session for all local Methodist Youth Fellowship presidents at Duke University. At the opening of this school year Susie received a most im- portant letter, her acceptance to Brenau College in Gainsville, Georgia. She plans to major in history. As anyone can plainly see, Suzanne is a truly outstanding person with a high scholastic average, and she ' s also a fine example of a good citizen. 34 PEGGY ALLEN PENNY SUE BAREFOOT SHIRLEY BEASLEY J.
