W. THOMPSON, who throughout our high school years has inspired us to set high goals of learning, understanding, honesty, and citizenship. His guidance has helped keep us on the right path to greater academic achievements. This dedication is but a small token of our lasting appreciation for one of our most loved and respected teachers. 2 Table of Contents PAGE DEDICATION 2 TATLER STAFF 4 CLASS OF 1962 6 ADMINISTRATION 7 SCHOOL BOARD 12 CLASS OF 1963 13 LITTLE SENIORS 28 SUPERLATIVES 29 CLASS HISTORY 40 CLASS PROPHECY 41 MASCOTS 42 CLASS OF 1964 44 CLASS OF 1965 49 CLASS OF 1966 53 CLASS OF 1967 58 ACTIVITIES 61 ATHLETICS 77 FEATURES 89 ADVERTISEMENTS 95 4 5 MRS. However, it seems that your class is worthy of some special recog- nition and commendation. We have observed that your class possesses the following attributes in varying degrees: 1. Many of your members have made outstanding scholastic records. This is indeed commendable. Intellectual growth and de- velopment is the primary purpose of all classroom instruction. 2. Your class, as a whole, has shown a commendable spirit of cooperation and good citizenship. This quality will certainly be needed in the years ahead. 3. Several of your members have shown keen interest in the various activities of the school. This interest has helped to develop well-rounded students. 4. Many members of your class have shown a deep interest in the development of the moral and spititual values of life. Certainly, the development of these eternal values form the foundation upon which all worthy living rests. The above traits, shown by many of your class, are the traits necessary for useful and devoted lives. I commend the development of these traits to all members of your class. These are the charac- teristics so badly needed for a world trying to find the way of The Prince of Peace. Best Wishes to Each of You, Wm. J. Barefoot Principal 9 MR. CLIFFORD N. CHARLES OLIVER WOODALL, JR. PAMELA GAYLE YOUNG 27 Cutest PATSY TART RONNIE ENNIS Class History In September of 1959 there entered Benson High School a group of anxious, wild-eyed freshmen. After much work and many good times, this class was to become the graduating class of 1963. The original number of students in our class was more than ninety, but after four years the total had dropped to sixty-five. Our freshman year startedwith our trying to become accustomed to the high school routine. During that year we did little other than collect class dues and elect our officers who were Ethelene Moore, president; Randy Eason, Vice Presi- dent; Jean Stevenson, secretary; and Don Parker, treasurer. With the help of our homeroom teachers— Mrs. Auman, Mrs. Willis, and Mr. Thompson— we did, however, have a slam-bang class party. Our second year in high school was in many ways like our first. Our homeroom teachers that year were Mr. J. L. Stephens and Mr. C. N. Bostic; and our officers were Don Parker, president; Johnny Allen, vice president; Randy Eason, secretary; and Jean Stevenson, treasurer. The highlight of that year was the class Christmas party. A lucky few, in the roles of waiters and waitresses, enjoyed the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom of that year. Our junior year proved to be a great variation from our preceding years. We found we had two new homeroom teachers— Mrs. Singletary and Mrs. Hines; and our class officers were Randy Eason, president; Don Parker, vice presi- dent; Patsy Tart, secretary; and Brenda Parker, treasurer. Our many activities included Stunt Night and the Junior- Senior Prom, the theme of which was Evening in Paris. This was our first year under the legendary Mrs. Louise Lambert, who showed us how to speak and write class histories correctly. Our senior year was full of work for everyone; our various enterprises included annual sales, class rings, magazine sales, Class Night, and the New York trip. Our homeroom teachers were Mrs. Lambert and Mr. V. J. Tucker, and our officers were Douglas Strickland, president; Brenda Parker, vice president; Anthony McLamb, secretary; and Patsy Neighbors and Franky Blackmon, treasurers. We soon finished our high school career, and as we did so, many of our class members look back on the best years of their lives, some with joy and some with regret, but all looked to the future with anticipation to goals set during our high school years. Our stay at Benson High has seemed long and tiresome, but the knowledge gained, the friends acquired, and the unforgettable experiences will always be valuable and dear to us— the class of ' 63. 40 Prophecy Miss MARY LOUISE JONES, beautiful stage, screen, and television star, and Miss BOBBI WOODALL, world renowned Paris model, have just returned from their round-the-world trip, on which they renewed friendships with their former classmates. The celebrities started their trip in Florida, where they talked with RAYMOND CLIFTON and ROBERT JOHNSON who are developing the Everglades into farmland. Then they went over to Louisiana to see TIMOTHY LEE, celebrated football coach of L. S. U. At Bowling Green Race Track in Kentucky the girls saw JERRY STANCIL, as successful jockey; and DANNY RAYNOR, an efficient horse trainer. In Detroit, Michigan, they reminisced with DAVID WOOD, and were shown his prize-winning design for a new Pontiac. They also got in touch with JUDY LEE and ADA JACKSON, co-owners of a big department store. In the nation ' s capital they were proud to claim Senator C. DOUGLAS STRICKLAND as one of their former class- mates. Here they were invited to a gala party thrown by FA YE PARKER, a Washington hostess, and her husband, the Secretary of the Navy. The travelers went on to New York to meet FRANKY BLACKMON, President of Westinghouse, Inc. , and his secre- tary, LINDA WALLACE. After congratulating Miss ETHELENE MOORE, Miss Luxembourg, they were taken on a tour of Union Carbide by the executive co-managers J. B. HAYES and BILL BRADLEY: and their secretaries, WILMA GOODWIN and CAROL PENNY. Then on to Idlewild Airport, where they were surprised to see ANN PLEASANT and ANNA ADAMS as hostesses. They went into the cockpit of the plane to speak to the pilot OTIS WEST. Soon the tourists arrived in London and checked in at the Grandbilt Hotel, owned by KENNETH PHILLIPS and KENNETH WEEKS. They stopped long enough to be entertained by the famous law partners, MIKE CANADY and DON PARKER. In Norway, after they saw JERRY DON McLAMB and S. C. NEIGHBORS, heads of the Scandanavian Dairy Associ- ation, they visited the T. V. studios. There they were pleased to see DIANE SORRELL on her children ' s program, The Miss Diane Show and BRENDA PARKER onhershow, Homemaking Hints. Theweary lasses relaxed at JOHN ALLEN ' S swanky hunting and fishing resort. After this rest they went on to see CHARLES LEE BYRD, a movie star, on location in Holland; RICHARD BEASLEY and KENNETH MOORE, race drivers in Holland ' s famous speedway; and PAM YOUNG, supervisor of nurses at the Brussels, Belgium, hospital. In Germany the girls attended a reception for Nobel Prize winner, BOBBY BOAN, who developed a new solution of the Pythagorean theorem. There they were delighted to see CHARLES McDANIEL, bookkeeper-in-charge of Germany Motors, and his very private secretary, EDITH HARDEE. Then on to gay Paree, where they saw LYNWOOD MASSENGILL inspecting his French headquarters of Massengill Van Lines. On the French Rivera, they found CHARLIE WOODALL and JOE NORRIS, now international playboys; RONNIE McLEOD, traveling companion for one of Confucius ' s wealthy descendants; and GLADYS and NANCY JOHNSON, comediennes appearing at one of the plush hotels. The American Secretaries ' Union was having its annual vacation on the Riviera and with it were JUDY MORGAN, GAIL PEACOCK, BETTY SUE PLEASANT, and DORIS ALLEN, all successful and highly-paid secretaries. The next stop on the agenda was Greece, where the tourists reminisced with PATSY TART, the N. B. C. chief foreign correspondent. In Turkey they talked with ROBERT McLAMB, and EUGENE LEE, big cigar manufacturers, about their new odorless cigar. From there they went to the royal court of India and visited the princess ' s tutor, PAT LANGDON. They also saw ANTHONY McLAMB, teaching modern agricultural methods to the Hindus. In Japan they were greeted by BARBARA BYRD, Pulitzer Prize winner for her latest novel. She took them to a hospital in Hong Kong to see cancer researchists, DORA STEVENS and PATSY NEIGHBORS. Decked in the port were FREDDIE BENSON, WAYNE McLAMB, and RANDY EASON on their P. T. boat. They stopped in Australia to see SUE RAYNOR, owner of an exclusive cheerleading camp. The tourists went on to Africa especially to see PHYLLIS ALLEN, assisting her renowned husband in photographing wild game. During their brief stop in Argentina they found STACY JOHNSON and JAMES GLOVER, livestock market chain operators. As soon as they docked in California, they rushed to Los Angeles to see RONNIE ENNIS, star of the Dodgers. The last stop on their trip was Las Vegas. They entered a lavish casino and found that CECIL MASSENGIL was the new owner. After looking through their high school annual, Mary Louise and Bobbi were delighted to see that they had renewed acquaintances with all their old school chums. 41 Junior Class Officers L. B.
