Mrs. Rachel Stephenson, Mrs. Elsie Thompson, Mrs. Faye Woodall Hay Principal ' s Message To the Senior Class of 1962: As you leave us this spring, we hope that you have been able to gain some insight into the many problems you will face in a rapidly changing world. For your consideration, we might list a few of these problems and the American way of meeting them: 1 . Due to the rapid change maue in the world of technology, science, and mechanical operations, information which was valid a short time ago, will no longer be valid. This means that you must keep an open mind relative to new problems and new information. The fact that the world no longer lives on the same level as our grandparents, does not necessarily mean that the world is going on the rocks. We must recognize change as a part of life. Of course, all change will not be for the best interest of mankind. You will need to keep your head in the air, but your feet upon the ground in considering changes. Be idealistic, of course, but remain practical. 2. Our way of life is being jeopardized by those who would make the individual the complete servant of the state. You will need to recognize this and make an effort at all times to recognize the worth of human personality and effort. Our system of education in America is based upon the development of the individual in order that he or she may become a more useful and productive citizen. Continue to support our American way of life. 3. Individual effort and accomplishment are the things which have made our country great. We do not get something for nothing . Our rights are determined by how well we meet our duties and responsibilities. Often privileged Americans proclaim long and loud their God-given rights and privileges, but pay very little attention to their duties and responsibilities. True Americans are not looking for a free ride. This is indeed very- poor c itizenship. We are not worthy of rights and privileges unless we can meet our duties and responsibilities which go along with these. For every right and privilege, there is a corresponding duty and responsibility. 4 . In the big hurry and push to accumulate material things and meet social obligations, you will need time for recognition of your duties and responsibilities in relation to your God. Remember the Sovereign Creator has first claim on your life. Acknowledge Him in all your ways . It is our sincere hope that you will be able to meet the stern demands of the years ahead in keeping with the ideals of a simple, child-like faith in Him who said, Ye Are the Light of the World. Our best wishes follow you wherever your paths may lead. William J. Barefoot, Principal 9 Faculty MR. CLIFFORD N. BOSTIC Social Studies B.S. E.C.C Duke MR. In the fall of 1958, we entered the portals of Benson High School as green freshmen. We may- have looked rather proud and confident, but on the inside we were frightened. After several blunders, we soon learned to follow our schedule without much difficulty. A wiener roast at Williams Lake was the outstanding event for us that year. With the guiding hands of Mrs. Frances J oh ns on, Mrs. Willis, and Mr. Thompson, we soon found ourselves as sophomores. We began our sophomore year by electing Donald W. Strickland, President; Larry Peacock, Vice-President; Douglas Allen, Treasurer; and Brenda Smith, Secretary. To raise money, the class sponsored the Sauline Players. It was a very exciting moment when Mr. Barefoot announced the seven girls and seven boys who were waiters and waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. In the spring, fourteen of us were tapped into the Beta Club, making Mr. Stephens and Mr. Leonard very proud. With a fierce determination to set the world on fire, we moved into the Junior Class. We started things off with a bang, h av ing one of the most successful Stunt Nights ever held. Joe Harrell and Judy Young held down the M. C. ' s spot, while one of our own Juniors, Rachel Adams, was crowned queen. 38 History From here we couldn ' t be stopped. With the help of Mr. Tucker, we really had a ball putting on our Junior Play, Oh, Promise Me . Boy, was that a success! ! Then we started making plans for our first Junior -Senior Banquet. Cinderella supplied us with an appropriate theme and set us on our way to a splendid night of magic and wonder. Then came the rush of our Senior year. Leading us through the one hundred and one things a Senior Class must do were Douglas Allen, President; Jerome Langdon, Vice-President; Betty Parrish , Secretary; and Sandra McLamb and Daniel Woodall, Treasurers. We really began to feel like seniors when we ordered our rings and elected our mascots. Preparing our Senior Play, publishing THE TATLER, and making plans for our trip to New York kept us in a flurry all year long . With graduation just around the corner, we look back upon our high school years, 1958-1962. These were our most memorable years; the years that molded our lives for the future. We shall never forget the days at dear old B.H.S. SUE LAW HON JOE HARRELL Historians Remember those class plays? What ever happened to those recesses?
