Principal ' s Message To the Class of 1961: Your graduation from high school will mean many things for you as a group, depending upon your plans, hopes and aspirations for the future. In whatever phase of life your lot may be cast, you carry with you our best wishes and highest esteem. For many of you, graduation from high school will mean the end of your formal education. You will soon accept work in various fields and begin to earn a living. It is my hope that, although your formal education as such may have ended, you will con- tinue to study and learn. Continue to develop your God-given mental faculties. If you are to become a well-informed and useful citizen, it will be necessary for you to con- tinue to read, study, think and plan. Give your best in physical, mental and moral strength in whatever honorable vocation you may follow. Remember that all honest labor is noble. God honors nobility of effort in any endeavor for the benefit of mankind and for his glory. Make service to God and your fellowman your guiding star. Many of you will enter institutions of higher learning, trade schools and other organized schools to continue your formal education and training. You will find, I am sure, that much will be expected from you. It will be necessary for you to discipline your mind, body and time. As you continue your preparation for places of responsibility and leadership, it is my sincere hope that you build the foundation strong and steady. This will require many months and years of earnest study and toil. Let Devotion to Duty be your motto. Some of you no doubt will soon establish homes and find your places as citizens of a community. I trust that you will be builders of a better and nobler life for your com- munity, state and nation. It requires no brains, thought, character or stamina to join the wrecking crew. To be a builder of that which is noble and uplifting does call for the finest attributes of human personality and devotion. For every right and privilege you will enjoy, there will be a corresponding duty and responsibility. Make The Sermon on the Mount your guide. I trust that Benson School has been able to point the way toward a better life for you. Follow the Gleam Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 7
