Rah! 4 Principal ' s Message To the Class of 1961: Your graduation from high school will mean many things for you as a group, depending upon your plans, hopes and aspirations for the future. In whatever phase of life your lot may be cast, you carry with you our best wishes and highest esteem. For many of you, graduation from high school will mean the end of your formal education. You will soon accept work in various fields and begin to earn a living. It is my hope that, although your formal education as such may have ended, you will con- tinue to study and learn. Continue to develop your God-given mental faculties. If you are to become a well-informed and useful citizen, it will be necessary for you to con- tinue to read, study, think and plan. Give your best in physical, mental and moral strength in whatever honorable vocation you may follow. Remember that all honest labor is noble. God honors nobility of effort in any endeavor for the benefit of mankind and for his glory. Make service to God and your fellowman your guiding star. Many of you will enter institutions of higher learning, trade schools and other organized schools to continue your formal education and training. You will find, I am sure, that much will be expected from you. It will be necessary for you to discipline your mind, body and time. As you continue your preparation for places of responsibility and leadership, it is my sincere hope that you build the foundation strong and steady. This will require many months and years of earnest study and toil. Let Devotion to Duty be your motto. Some of you no doubt will soon establish homes and find your places as citizens of a community. I trust that you will be builders of a better and nobler life for your com- munity, state and nation. It requires no brains, thought, character or stamina to join the wrecking crew. To be a builder of that which is noble and uplifting does call for the finest attributes of human personality and devotion. For every right and privilege you will enjoy, there will be a corresponding duty and responsibility. Make The Sermon on the Mount your guide. I trust that Benson School has been able to point the way toward a better life for you. Follow the Gleam Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 7 8 MR. E. S. Remember our first day in high school, when our heads were in a whirl and we were feeling just a little too big for our britches? We didn ' t get much done, but we thought we were the busiest group in school. Just getting our class organized was quite a job. However, we did manage to elect officers. The supreme heads of the mighty freshman class were Danny Royster, President; Donnie Phillips, Vice-President; Sharon Barbour, Treasurer; Eloise Dorman, Secretary; and Judy Adams, Reporter. After this tremendous start in high school, we were able to face our Sophomore year with a little more confidence. Having established ourselves as the equal to any class, we could now begin to take a closer look at our future. After electing Donnie Phillips, President; Tracy Medlin, Vice-President; Virginia Barefoot, Treasurer; Barbara Snipes, Secre- tary; and Anne Johnson, Reporter, we got things rolling by putting the Sauline Players into the pay column. We felt quite rich after contributing a lump sum of about $250. 00 to our class treasury. The rest of the year went by quickly, and we topped the Sophomore days off with a hamburger fry at Williams ' Lake. Our Junior year! This year our work really began with Stunt Night, the Junior Play, and the Junior- Senior Banquet and Prom coming ' in rapid succession. Stunt Night and the Junior Play, Let Me Out of Here, proved to be quite profit- able. Then came the event of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and we really began to appreciate the profits from our other two undertakings. However, it was worth every cent, and more. Our theme, Stairway to the Stars, lent an air of heavenly bliss, and it was a night that will long be remembered by all. Guiding us through this industrious year were Tracy Medlin, President; Bill Woodall, Vice-President; Donnie Phillips, Treasurer; and Donald Wheeler, Secretary. At last it was here! Our Senior year! We had reached the climax of our high school days, and we were on top of the world. How swiftly these last weeks flew by, presided over by R. J. McLamb, President; Sharon Barbour, Vice-President; Catherine Hudson, Secretary; and Brenda McLamb and Camille Levinson, Treasurers. Events whirled by so fast that it was hard to realize what a glorious time we were having. The dramatic highlight of the year was the presentation of our Senior Play— or rather plays, The Man in the Bowler Hat (Comedy), and Riders to the Sea (Tragedy). And who can forget our formal Christmas party with the beautiful Winter Wonderland theme and Bill Joe Austin ' s band! We have our gradeparents to thank for that memorable event. After mid-term, things really got moving. There was the magazine sale, rings, plans for the New York trip, and preparations for graduation. Yes, these years will long remain in our store-chest of memories, but even after these events have faded, let us keep in our hearts the remembrance of our classmates. We have come a long way together but graduation marks only the beginning, not the end, of our lives. As we drift apart, let ' s not forget these happy years and many friendships; and let us strive to profit from the lessons we have learned. VIRGINIA BAREFOOT DONNIE PHILLIPS 28 Prophecy The fourth dimension is in effect. It is ten years since we have been to a homecoming dance as a group. The doors are open and we have many a chuckle at seeing our old friends. Let ' s take a look. Come on in. Look! Over there! It ' s NELSON HOLLAND. Don ' t tell me, he ' s grown an inch; he can almost see over the crowd. Wonder what they are looking at. It ' s a three ring circus with LARRY WHITTINGTON as the barker. GLORIA ALLEN is doing her imitation of the Big Bopper, while VIRGINIA BAREFOOT and ETTA RUTH ADAMS are showing us their famous Florida Strut routine. DIANE OVERBY and BARBARA SNIPES are leading the school song. TRACY and DONNIE, now partners in Medlin and Phillips Pharmaceutical Supply, are trying to sell to the B and B Drug Company, owned by BEN CLIFTON and BILL WOODALL, the latest cold remedy. Are we being invaded? Here comes the troops led by Colonel JAMES HALLER, of the U.S. Air Force, with TOMMY PARRISH, DONNIE LANGDON, MIKE BAIN, BOBBY WHITMAN, and BOBBY LEE, following in tight formation. R. J. McLAMB, STACY NORRIS, JIMMY HAYES, and CARROLL BRITT, just back from a Carribbean Cruise, in the Navy, are planning to sleep well tonight knowing that RONNIE CREECH, CHARLES BLACKMAN, LARRY NORRIS, LERAY BAREFOOT and the rest of the National Guard are awake. BILL SORRELL, designer of the new governor ' s mansion, is discussing the building plans with LARRY WOOD, a con- tractor, while MICKEY MATTHEWS, the state ' s newly appointed state highway consultant, is looking on. NOELA SUE AUMAN is doing the interior decorating for the mansion. DANNY ROYSTER has just designed a new jetliner, which is powered by six of W. T. SORRELL ' S ramjet engines. DONALD WHEELER has designed the guidance system for this plane. MARCIA LEE GUITON is the head stewardess on this plane. Here comes JERRY NEAL CREECH, Mr. Big Business, followed by his harem of private secretaries, MARGARET BEASLEY, BRENDA SUE McLAMB, FAY WEST, and ANN MORGAN. BILLY MOORE and BILLY POPE are being escorted by ROBERT DENNING, ROY DENNING, LESLIE BLACK, and LEAMON CLIFTON, the state ' s leading patrolmen, after a 90-mile-an-hour chase. He almost got away. MIKE JOHNSON, now the owner of Johnson Tire Company, is discussing with DON BYRD, the state ' s leading accountant, the possibility of a $100,000 embezzlement. Private detective, BRUCE PEACOCK, has been called into investigate. He is talking with the company ' s secretaries, RACHEL BLACKMAN and LINDA SUE McLAMB. CAROL and CAMILLE LEVINSON are celebrating their victory for the first prize of the All-American-Twin-Contest. GLENN PARRISH, North Carolina ' s Secretary of Agriculture, is explaining his new theory of how to harvest 350 bushels of corn per acre to R. L. GODWIN, KENNETH WEST, and LARRY LEE, who are Johnston County ' s biggest pro- ducers of corn. JUDITH ADAMS, CATHERINE HUDSON and BECKY BENSON head the staff at the Benson Health Center. LEONARD McLAMB has just returned from Indiana, where he has just been made vice-president of U. S. Steel. He is trying, along with ED Mousey MILLER and JOSEPH McDANIEL, to assemble a Do it yourself helicopter kit. ANN JOHNSON and ELOISE DORMAN, teachers at the Benson Elementary School, have devised a way to keep all the little ones of CAROLE PHILLIPS, RACHEL WHEELER, NANCY BLAKE, BEL VIA McLAMB, and WETONA WOODCOCK out of so much mischief. Smith-Corona just gave SHARON BARBOUR a new typewriter for winning the National Typing Contest. CLARA COBB, MARY PARRISH, JACKIE BARBOUR, NELL HOLLOMAN, EDITH SUGGS, and FAYE STEWART are happily married and are helping keep the Benson School well populated. As this gala affair draws to a close, with some old friends crying tears of joy, others laughing, we leave; but we will always remember the many happy days at B.H. S. that we have just relived in these few short hours.
