Principal ' s Message To Members of Class of 1960: As you leave our school, I trust that you will carry with you some ideals and principles which have been inculcated into the fabric of your lives during your stay here. Among these ideals and principles, it is our hope that the following have made deep impressions upon you: 1. WE DO NOT GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. Anything of any real worth and value in life requires effort, thought, and energy. You and I cannot expect to go through life upon the glory of our past, or upon some fantastic idea of what might happen in the future. Present effort and accomplishment is the thing which counts. This applies to work in school, as well as to other phases of our life. 2. QUALITY EDUCATION (about which we have heard so much in recent months) REQUIRES THOROUGH APPLICATION TO THE TASKS CONFRONTING US. All of us must realize that the first and most important requirement of the public school is that of teaching and learning. Intellectual growth and development must go along with our growth along other lines. Lasting benefits of any kind cannot be accomplished without effort and dedication to our tasks. 3. HONEST WORK OF ANY KIND IS HONORABLE. Willingness and a desire to do the simple tasks in life equip us to do the more difficult things in life. Are you willing to begin at the bottom and ascend the ladder through your own efforts? 4. FOR EVERY RIGHT AND PRIVILEGE WE HAVE A DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY. As law-abiding citizens we must realize that without law and order we have chaos and bedlam. If we hope to keep our rights and privileges, it will be necessary to assume our duties and responsibilities. We are not worthy of rights and privileges unless we measure up to our duties and responsibilities. 5. THE INTANGIBLES AND SPIRITUAL THINGS OF LIFE ARE THE ETERNAL VERITIES. Honesty, courage, mercy, humility, and love are the values which will endure after all the material things of life have passed away. 6. MORAL AND RELIGIOUS VALUES MUST FORM THE FOUNDATIONS OF OUR LIVES. Without the under-girding of the work of the Almighty, our efforts will all be in vain. The greatest and most useful men and women of all ages have recognized and paid homage to a spiritual reality higher than the spirit within them- selves. Our best wishes follow you in all your future endeavors. Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 5
