PRESENTING THE 1960 TATLER Published by The Senior Class of Benson High School Benson, North Carolina To our parents, whose guiding light has penetrated our darkest ba rriers, forming the pathways on which we have trod, we return a favor after eighteen years of receiving so many. Without this light, we would be completely blind - - - without these pathways, where would we find suc- cess? It is impossible to enumerate the many ways in which we are dependent upon those we love dearest. The dedication of the 1960 TATLER could not be more appropriate. ADMINISTRATION Mr. W. J. Barefoot Mrs. Elsie Thompson Principal ' s Message To Members of Class of 1960: As you leave our school, I trust that you will carry with you some ideals and principles which have been inculcated into the fabric of your lives during your stay here. Among these ideals and principles, it is our hope that the following have made deep impressions upon you: 1. WE DO NOT GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. Anything of any real worth and value in life requires effort, thought, and energy. You and I cannot expect to go through life upon the glory of our past, or upon some fantastic idea of what might happen in the future. Present effort and accomplishment is the thing which counts. This applies to work in school, as well as to other phases of our life. 2. QUALITY EDUCATION (about which we have heard so much in recent months) REQUIRES THOROUGH APPLICATION TO THE TASKS CONFRONTING US. All of us must realize that the first and most important requirement of the public school is that of teaching and learning. Intellectual growth and development must go along with our growth along other lines. Lasting benefits of any kind cannot be accomplished without effort and dedication to our tasks. 3. HONEST WORK OF ANY KIND IS HONORABLE. Willingness and a desire to do the simple tasks in life equip us to do the more difficult things in life. Are you willing to begin at the bottom and ascend the ladder through your own efforts? 4. FOR EVERY RIGHT AND PRIVILEGE WE HAVE A DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY. As law-abiding citizens we must realize that without law and order we have chaos and bedlam. If we hope to keep our rights and privileges, it will be necessary to assume our duties and responsibilities. We are not worthy of rights and privileges unless we measure up to our duties and responsibilities. 5. THE INTANGIBLES AND SPIRITUAL THINGS OF LIFE ARE THE ETERNAL VERITIES. Honesty, courage, mercy, humility, and love are the values which will endure after all the material things of life have passed away. 6. MORAL AND RELIGIOUS VALUES MUST FORM THE FOUNDATIONS OF OUR LIVES. Without the under-girding of the work of the Almighty, our efforts will all be in vain. The greatest and most useful men and women of all ages have recognized and paid homage to a spiritual reality higher than the spirit within them- selves. Our best wishes follow you in all your future endeavors. Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 5 MRS. ANNALEAN JOHNSON MR. RICHARD LEONARD Commercial Science MRS. LOUISE LAMBERT Engl ish MR. It seems like only yesterday that our patient mothers forced us into our Sunday Best and dragged us off to encounter a new experience—school! During our eight years of grammar school many of our days were stormy; but soon there was a ray of sunshine to drive every cloud away. Before we knew it, we were making plans for our first year in high school. Our Freshman year was filled with every color of the rainbow. Turned footloose in high school, we were only interested in having a good time. But with the guidance of Mr. J. W. Thompson, Mrs. Owen Willis, and Mrs. Nor- wood Sorrell, we were soon set straight. Our officers for that year were Sue Lynn Bailey, president; Judith Whit- tington, vice-president; Guan Barbour, secretary; and Sarah Whittington, treasurer. As Silly Sophomores, our year was rather gloomy, and it seemed as if a rainbow would never appear. We tried to increase our class pocketbook by sponsoring The Sauline Players, but our profit amounted to $3.25. With encouragement from Mr. Tom Davis and Mrs. Owen Willis, our sponsors, we hoped for better years to come. To conduct our business for this year were Randel Holland, president; Sue Lynn Bailey, secretary; and Frances Barbour, treasurer. During our year as Jolly Juniors we began contemplating ways to collect cash. With the help of Mrs. Joan Johnson, we published our school paper, The Spotlight ' Mr. Joe Woodworth had the patience to help us present our class play, The Dizzy Dillions, which, along with Stunt Night, really increased our bank roll. What a task it was for our President, Gordon McLamb, to keep order while the class was making suggestions and decisions for the long-awaited Jr. -Sr. Prom. With the help of Joyce Raynor, secretary, and Rochelle McLamb, treasurer, everything went off smoothly. The brains of our class, who were to serve as marshals, were Susan Wood, chief; Judith Whittington, Sue Lynn Bailey, Elbert Massad, Sarah Whittington, Elizabeth Wood, Joyce Creech, and Gay Nell Ennis. We could hardly believe that in three months, we would be Sophisticated Seniors. Our last year can be compared to the brightest color of the rainbow. To conduct our orderly class meetings, Gordon McLamb was again our president. To keep notes and correspond for our class was Sue Lynn Bailey, secre- tary. We elected Ann Currin and Judith Whittington to keep an eye on our money. We stayed busy making plans for publishing the TATLER, ordering rings, preparing the senior play, and doing the one hundred things a senior class must do. We realize now the storm will soon be over, and we will have reached the end of the rainbow- -graduation! Will we find a pot of gold? Some of our seniors will; perhaps some will not- -but it waits for those who seek. Sue Lynn Bailey Historian 10 Prophecy It is a warm night in June of the year 1965. Former classmates of the 1960 graduating class are gathered at Cape Canaveral, Florida, waiting for the rocket ship, Leonard, to whisk us off for an unforgettable journey to the Moon Republic of America. As we enter the rocket ship, we are told by JOYCE RAYNOR who has become a suc- cessful stewardess, to fasten our seat belts. Next we are greeted by the captain of the Leonard, CONNIE HOLLAND. Looking around, we see R. L. GODWIN, SHERWOOD STEWART, J. R. LEE and WAYNE STEPHENSON , several promi- nent tobacco farmers. Suddenly the passengers of the rocket ship break into a roar of laughter. It seems that JERRY PENNY, a famous comedian, has just cracked one of his hilarious jokes. DOROTHY COATS, MARIE DOR- MAN, and ROCHELLE McLAMB can ' t seem to stop laughing. Of course we all know this is just to cover up their loneliness which is caused by their being away from their families. When we pass through the Milky Way, DAVID BRADLEY, GORDON McLAMB, and ELBERT MASSAD, all famous scientists, seem to be in a trance as they discuss the formation of this galaxy. SCOTT AMIS, GUAN BARBOUR, and HOWARD NORRIS, nuclear engineers, join in the discussion. For entertainment along the way ARLENE ENNIS, JANICE HALL, FRANCES McLAMB, EDNA RUTH JACKSON, and JOYCE STANCIL relate some amusing incidents about their married life to BETTY MANGUM and RACHEL TART, who say married life is not for them. Suddenly the voice of JAMES ALLEN comes over the inter- com informing us that we are about to land. Greeting us after we land is a platoon of Moon Rangers. We recog- nize several of our former classmates. JIM BEST, ED HALLER, PAUL LANGDON, and BILL MONDAY have chosen this branch of military service as a career. Walking through the rocket terminal we see several offices which remind ANN CURRIN, SANDRA HODGES, DORIS ALLEN, and JACKIE ALLEN of their jobs as secretaries in the Empire State Building back on earth. Upon arriving at the Hotel Lunar, we are greeted by its owner, LARRY TART. The desk clerk, HAROLD GODWIN, gives us the keys to our rooms. After resting a few minutes we go to The Comet, a night club owned by RAEFORD SURLES. Performing is BRENDA STEPHENSON with her all-girl band, The Moon- lighters. Playing first clarinet and trumpet are JUDY COATS and CAROLYN PENNY respectively. JUDI JOHN- SON and BRENDA JOHNSON, well known as the Twin Pianos, are also members of this band. SARAH WHITTING- TON, GAY NELL ENNIS, and FRANCES ENNIS, who make up the Venus Trio, perform with a look of professional- ism, as they sing Moon Over Miami. Suddenly all eyes are turned toward the door as JANET JOHNSON, Miss Moon Republic of America, enters in all her glamour. Finally the time comes for us to return to the hotel. The next day we arise early, because we have a busy schedule ahead of us. First we visit the race track, where we get the thrill of a lifetime as jockey, DOUGLAS BARNES, leads his horse to victory. Next we tour a rocket factory owned by VADEN HOLMES. He is talking to his department heads, DONALD BYRD and LARRY CLAYTON, about some new plans. After leaving the factory we are ready to eat lunch at a famous restaurant owned by PHIL JOHN- SON. The lunch is very enjoyable. While letting our food digest, we decide to attend the Moon Series between the Planets and the Meteors, well known baseball teams. Through our binoculars we spy some former class- mates who are now major league baseball players. They are BUDDY JOHNSON, STACY BLACKMAN, and RANDEL HOLLAND. Nurses JOYCE CREECH and ELIZABETH WOOD are on hand in case of a misfortune on the field. Model JANET STEPHENSON enters with her famous hairdresser, JUDY NORDAN. It seems that everyone is interested in the Moon Series. Before returning to earth, we go to FRED JONES ' cattle ranch for a steak supper. SUE LYNN BAILEY, great home economist, gives bachelor Fred some pointers on preparing outdoor meals. After eating, we sit around the campf ire singing some famous songs written by JIMMY MOORE, a well-known writer. Now it comes time to return to earth. All farewells are said and we start our journey. It ' s been loads of fun, but everyone seems anxious to return home. Upon reaching earth we go our separate ways. I, JUDITH WHITTINGTON, must return to work on my Master ' s Degree and I, SUSAN WOOD, to Medical School.
