In completing your high school course I am sure that you will want to take time and evaluate the time and effort you have put into your work here. It seems to me that you might ask yourselves the following questions: 1. HAVE I DEVELOPED A RESPECT FOR SCHOLARSHIP AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT? Classroom work is the primary purpose of our public schools. Our nation is calling for men and women who have developed the self discipline imposed by the work of the class- room. Unless students have been able to profit through classroom experiences and gained respect for scholarship and academic achievement, the most important goal of education has been missed. Learning is the chief characteristic of an educated person. 2. HAVE I LEARNED TO LIVE WITH AND GET ALONG WITH OTHER PEOPLE? No person lives unto himself or herself. The day of the hermit and caveman has passed. With our improved means of communication and transportation, it is imperative that men and women work with each other. More people are unable to make a success in their work today because of their inability to get along with other people than for any other single reason. You must be able to give and take. The viewpoint of others must always be taken into consideration. 3. HAVE I.LEARNED TO THINK CLEARLY AND ACT UPON FACTS? One of the earmarks of an educated person is the ability to think straight --to distinguish between truth and error. Clear thinkers will save the day for our nation and world --not the radicals and hotheads. 4. HAVE I DEVELOPED AN APPRECIATION OF ALL OF MY GOD -GIVEN GIFTS --PHYSICAL, MENTAL and SPIRITUAL? One of the clear characteristics of an educated person is his or her full realization that his or her strength comes from a higher power. Our responsibility is to develop and use those God -given talents and gifts. Are we grateful for these gifts? Do we use them solely for selfish purposes? 5. HAVE I LEARNED TO RECOGNIZE AND APPRECIATE THE ETERNAL VERITIES OF LIFE? The truly educated person respects honor, integrity, truth, charity, love and all the other imperishable charactistics of the good life. Do you try to cultivate these things in your own lives? The Great Teacher said, What does it Profit a Man to Gain the World and Lose his Soul? Education of the heart must go along with education of the head. Our best wishes go with you in all your future endeavors. I trust that Benson High School has given you some appreciation of the above realities of an educated person. Think on These Things Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 7
