Text from Pages 1 - 100 of the 1958 volume:

THE TATLER 58  .-. ' 1958 Section, 2 Our Classmate FRANK LANGDON July 28, 1940 December 7, 1956 His life was a quiet example of kindness, loyalty, and devotion. 3 Dedication ADMINISTRATION Mr. WILLIAM J. BAREFOOT Principal Mrs. ELSIE THOMPSON Secretary To Senior Class of 1958: As you leave our high school this year, we want you to know that you have made a definite and constructive contribution to the life of our school. You have been a class of high ideals, persistent effort and good citizenship. Many of your group have made outstanding records in scholarship and other school activities. Many problems will confront you as you leave us. I trust you have gained some insight into the many intricate problems now facing our country and the world. These difficult problems will require a high devotion to duty, personal integrity, a high degree of responsibility, and above all a loyal devotion to the highest and best of our moral and spiritual values. To help you fill your place honorably and effectively in a world of turmoil, you will need the help and advice of friends, knowledge and understanding of current events, and above all, guidance and help from our Divine Creator. Humility and reverence will be required of you at all times if you are to serve well your fellow -man, your community and your God. We are living in an age of tremendous scientific advancement. Atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, missiles, space rockets, etc. are common words in the vocabulary of even our younger people. Certainly the great advances made in the field of science have placed the human race in such a position as to eradicate itself or to use these great advances for the good of humanity. We are in doubt as to whether our moral and spiritual progress has kept pace with our scientific progress. Has the edu- cation of the heart kept pace with the education of the head? Your generation will answer this question. Throughout the ages, men have sought to find their greatest comfort and solace in the material things of life. To a very limited degree they have succeeded. How- ever, in the final accounting of all things, it will be the great Imperishables of Life which have given men their greatest comfort and satisfaction. These great spiritual values have endured throughout the ages and will continue to endure throughout the endless ages of eternity. I point you to a careful study of the fifth chapter of St. Matthew for these abiding values. These are the great principles which will endure after the material things of this life have all decayed and passed from the earth. My sincere wish for you is that you will endeavor to find and follow in your useful and fruitful years ahead these great and abiding spiritual values. Wm. J. Barefoot, Principal 7 Mr. WILLIAM J. You have helped and guided us in ways that only parents can. Class of 1958 23 JUDY FREEMAN and BILLY GODWIN You are invited: To What? A Masquerade Party When? May 28, 1968 Where ? At the Satellite Club in Benson Why? To renew old acquaintances What time? 9:00 p.m. A very large crowd has already arrived. Everyone is talking and laughing, remembering days at Benson High School. Suddenly someone draws the attention of the crowd. It is Charles Jernigan. He is going to introduce everyone. It is twelve o ' clock and everyone must unmask. The first person introduced is J. E. Lee. He is a very successful farmer and owns very much land. Next, Betty Anne West, Rosalie Gilbert, and Martha Glover are introduced. Their dreams are now fulfilled. They are happily married, live near each other, and have telephones. Next on the platform is Linda Faye Wood. She has just returned from India where she directed her latest movie starring Tommy Barbour and Emma Lou Holmes. Brenda Langdon, better known as Lanky, is a basketball coach. She joins the group and is followed by Delores Vernelson, a famous model, and Jimmy Stuart. Jimmy is a bookkeeper in a large firm. We know it is bankrupt. Taking their places among the others, we see Andrew Norris, Charles Ray Ennis, and Becky Smith. Andrew now has a part in the play Romeo and Juliet. Knowing Andrew, it isn ' t hard to guess which his part is. Charles Ray is pianist for Lawrence Welk. Becky has established herself in the medical field as a technologist. Max Johnson and Lawrence Campbell surely aren ' t going to be left out. They own a Super Market downtown. With them are Vasco Creech and Phil Norris. Vasco is an executive in the Creech Creech Company, and Phil is running for Mayor next election. Sybil Whittington, Annie Ruth Lee I, and Sue Creech look very cute in their white uniforms. You couldn ' t find three better nurses anywhere. Louie Belle Johnson is going to meet them. She works at the same hospital as a dental assistant. Ernestine Stephenson is down here from Connecticut visiting her mother. We are glad that she is with us. With her are Jewel Grimes and Hilda Jones. They are walking around here with diamonds on their left hand. They sure do look happy. Here come Rayvon Adams, Rayford Stevens, and Wayne Parrish strutting up on the platform. They are the three biggest tobacco farmers in North Carolina. We now see a very distinguished man walk up to the microphone. It is Tommy Stephenson, a famous nuclear scientist. Withhimis his private secretary, Lucinda Matthews. Following them are Judy Dixon and Jackie Ennis. Jackie is editor of a famous New York paper. Judy is assistant editor. We are very proud of our class. Here come two men we can well be proud of, Jerry Langdon and Billy Parrish. Jerry plays professional baseball and Billy is the joke writer of a very prominent magazine . Wade Johnson and Larry Young come in late. They had to check on their chain of restaurants before attending the party. Ray Jones and Billy Godwin are spotted in the crowd. They have found that their diplomas have enabled them to get very good jobs in large firms. We hear someone laughing. Without turning, we know who it is: Dura Faye Barbour, Judith Neighbors, and Mary Benson, all secretaries. Their main duty is to sit on the boss ' s knee. Carolyn Phillips, Jane Haller, and Linda Johnson take a seat. Jane and Carolyn are now airline hostesses. Linda couldn ' t stand the altitude so she quit and got married. Linda Denning, looking very well indeed, is part owner of a theater. Annie Ruth Lee II, Melba Beasley, and Mary Coats now have a trio and have taken the place of the McGuire Sisters. They now have a hit record. Max Barbour is talking to Sue Beasley and Vivian Barbour. Max is a jockey. He has won several races with the help of the horse. Sue just dropped in to say hello. She is on her way to Florida. Vivian has a job in an office. She got some wonderful training at Benson High School. Judy Freeman and Joyce Anne Lee seem to have very much in common. They teach at Benson High. Judy is taking the place of Mr. Stephens and Joyce Anne the place of Mrs. Lambert. We must all leave this wonderful place. I, Bette Anne Wood, must prepare my lesson for tomorrow ' s class and I, Vivian Joyce Parker, must return home to my husband and children. We shall not soon forget this night or our days at Benson High School. Class Prophets Bette Anne Wood Vivian Joyce Parker 36 Stop--Flat Tire! Our years together will not flatten, but will remain inflated forever. Materials: Pupils, teachers, fun, sincerity, loyalty, better understanding of our fellow human being. Method: Bolt I. It all began on an autumn morning about twelve years ago when our proud mamas, after much dressing, coaxing and bribing, dragged us off for our first day at school. Were we scared! ! ! After all, we were being thrown out into the cold old world for the first time. We were approaching new fields to conquer, new friends, new joys, and new hardships. We were embarking on many long, hard, and wonderful years together, which have turned out to be entirely too short and not so hard and twice as wonderful. But before we go too far, let ' s begin just a few years back. Bolt II. We had finally reached eighth grade and after studying extra hard for a year we embarked upon Benson High as Fresh Freshmen. Our freshman officers were Jackie Ennis, President; Joy Byrd, Vice President; Bette Anne Wood, Secretary; and Emma Lou Holmes, Treasurer. With the guidance of our sponsors, Mr. J. W. Thompson, Mrs. Nancy Willis, and Mrs. Mattie Lou Penny, we finally reached our sophomore year, and changed our name to Sloppy Sophs. During our sophomore year Linda Faye Wood was elected president, with Mr. J. L. Stephens and Mr. W. G. Corbett as advisers. We sponsored the Sauline Players to help increase our class pocketbook, and before we knew it two years of high school were behind us and two ahead. Bolt III. We finally made for ourselves-- Jolly Juniors. What a year for us! With our officers, Charles Ray Ennis, President; Billy Godwin, Vice President; Judy Neighbors, Secretary; Lucinda Matthews, Treasurer; and our sponsors, Miss Emily Milton and Mr. J. W. Woodworth, we passed a successful year. Stunt Night, as well as our play, THE RED-HEADED STEPCHILD, contributed to our bankroll for the forth- coming banquet. Our Christmas party at the gym was a highlight of the holiday season. The coming of Spring meant only one thing--Junior-Senior at the Country Club. Under a ceiling of blue stars and the theme Fantasia, we dined and danced until midnight, adding many memories to our collection. Graduation came, with Bette Anne Wood as chief marshal, assisted by Rebecca Smith, Vivian Joyce Parker, Joyce Anne Lee, Judy Freeman, Judy Dixon, Jackie Ennis, and Tommy Stephenson. The Finish As Sophisticated Seniors we tightened the final bolts on the wheel. This was the final year of school for some, but only a stepping stone for others. We began the year by electing as class officers Charles Ray Ennis, President; Billy Godwin, Vice President; Linda Denning, Secretary; and Brenda Langdon and Dura Barbour, Treasurers. Class rings arrived in October (our hands were stiff for weeks from holding them out); mascots, Cindy Parrish and Tommy Chapin, were chosen in October; and LINDY LOU was our play. We looked forward to the rest of our last year in high school and at long last- -Graduation. But for none of us is this the finish, for-- The Best Is Yet To Come.
