Barbour III 18 19 22 26 PROPHECY It ' s a warm Jurie night in 1967, and as we come to a stop in front of the Smithfield Country Club, we pause and listen to the music. It is different from that to which we listened and danced only ten years ago. As we are taking our seats J.R. Register, a big Chevrolet dealer, calls our attention to the Number I Band directed by Charles Holmes. We notice that Jackie Woodall and Jean Benson are having a time looking after six kids and at the same time trying to get an autograph for the children from two great Yankee pitchers, Landis Coats and Edward Stephenson. Paul Dunn, a famous Television Producer is trying to get these boys to appear on Person To Person. Charles Gibbs cuts a step and announces that he has an open date. Glancing around the room we see Jean Wood, Joyce Benson, and Linda Hall surround- ing Gerald Johnson, who is still looking for his one and only. Jean, Joyce and Linda are now doing secretarial work in Raleigh. Kenneth Dorman is discussing his Charles Atlas Courses with Charles Ingram, Charles Lee, and Johnny Strictland who are merchants in Benson. David Haller, the new Benson Review owner, is interviewing Billy Stuart who is en- tering his ' 57 Ford in the Darlington Races this year. During his spare time from his huge farms Jerry Morgan is Billy ' s mechanic. We hear a roar of laughter and it ' s none other than Libby Massad and Carroll Allen talking over those good ole days in Dunn. Libby and Carroll are now residing in their homes near the S S Grill. Our attention is drawn to the Band Stand as we see Don Clifton who is taking time off from his Broadway Schedule to sing all those Elvis Presley songs. We thought Don would be a big Livestock Producer like Roy Byrd and Glenwood Holland. Roy and Glen- wood now own farms near Benson. Ray Nell Eason, now owner of Betty Gay ' s, is talking with some of her clerks, Louise Lee, Janet Lee, and Ollie McLamb. They wave at Betty Frances Surles, Frances Thorn- ton, and Barbara Stephenson. Frances and Barbara are happy now that their husbands are out of service. Betty Frances is a private secretary. As we dance we notice Zona Faye Barbour and Helen Allen. They are successful nurses at Rex Hospital and are also doing housework. Not far from the group we find Charles Blackman, a successful artist, trying to persuade Sylvia Gaines to let him paint her. Sylvia is a Hospital Technician at Duke Hospital. Wandering over to the punch bowl we find W.A. Barbour, a leading engineer, talking to Pat Medlin and Jean Dale Freeman. Pat is both a housewife and famous hair stylist. Jean Dale is secretary and co-owner of the Lee Enterprizes. Under a cloud of smoke we see C.L. Parker entertaining Doris Dunn, Arlette Mc- Lamb, and Glennie Boan who have a full time job keeping house. Near the door we hear Rebecca Dixon, Bonnie Wheeler, and Sylvia Vernelson bring- ing each other up to date on their married life. Joining the group are Mary Frances Oakley and Sandra Coats who are living in Coats. Seated on the sofa we find Ruth Barefoot and Barbara Coats. Ruth is a commercial teacher at Meadow and Barbara is a private secretary. Arriving last is Peggy Nordan with her husband. Peggy has been married about twelve years and has three children. As all say good-night, happy that they have renewed their old friendships, the Band plays Auld Lang Syne. 30 CLASS HISTORY September of 1953 revealed seventy-two green, scared, but proud students. At last we had reached that long-awaited goal--HIGH SCHOOL. Knowing that our freshman year would be the basis of our high school career, we elected Billy Johnson president to help us get off on the right foot. Thanks to our understanding sponsors, Mrs. Stephen- son, Mrs. Perkinson, and Mr. Thompson, we completed the hectic year. Then in 1954 we began our sophomore year, decreased in number, but increased in ambition. As guiding lights we selected Billy Staurt, president; Don Clifton, vice- president; Frances Thornton, secretary; and Betty Frances Surles, treasurer, aided by Mr. Corbett and Mr. Stephens. The highlights of the year were the sponsoring of the Sauline Players and the tapping of eighteen members of our class as Beta Club mem- bers. Looking forward to all the junior activities we eagerly began our junior year. Our class officers were Billy Johnson, president; Billy Stuart, vice-president; Betty Frances Surles, secretary; and Louise Lee, treasurer. We edited THE STUDENT under the gui- dance of W.A. Barbour, editor, with the aid of other members of our class. We also sponsored Stunt Night which was a real success. As March rolled around we presented our first play, Here Comes Charlie. Because of the success of Stunt Night and our play, we gave the seniors one of the most beautiful banquets ever given. The theme Starlight, was beautifully carried out at the Johnston County Country Club. Our spon- sors, Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Woodworth, made these activities possible and most enjoy- able for us. The Marshals chosen were W.A. Barbour, chief; Billy Johnson, Libby Mas- sad, Sylvia Gaines, Zona Faye Barbour, Ray Nell Eason, Helen Allen, and Joyce Benson. Finally the time arrived when we became dignified SENIORS. Leading us through our senior year were Don Clifton, president; Billy Stuart, vice-president; Betty Frances Surles, secretary; Louise Lee, treasurer; Sylvia Vernelson, assistant treasurer; and sponsors, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Lambert. Our hardest and most gratifying project of the year was the publication of THE TATLER. Next came our senior play, A Pair of Country Kids, then, our Junior and Senior Banquet. During our senior year our class appreciated immensely the various parties given to us by our grade parents and the mascots, Mary Lynn Dunn and Davey Dunn. One of the most important steps of our lives now confronts us GRADUATION. To this day we are anxiously looking forward. For some it will be the ending of school days; for others it will only be the completion of one phase of their educational development.
