1 ■i ■■■: i ; 1 . ' ' ' ' ' - - ■■■% i mm, i w,- mmm PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1947 will be remembered as a class of varied characteristics. Your class is the first to have Ex-Service Men enrolled as graduates. This class has felt the full force of the strain of war, as well as the difficult situation brought about by an acute shortage in teaching personnel. As freshmen in the fall of 1943, our nation was in the titantic struggle with the forces of Hitler and the Japanese war lords. As you graduate in the spring of 1947, our nation is going through a most difficult period of readjustment. The world you will know will be different from the world of yester- day. Intelligence and consecrated devotion to high ideals will be de- manded of you. More than ever will man need to really think. The postwar era will present many fabulous opportunities to mount a social and economic merry go round which leads to nowhere. There will also be many real opportunities to render service of lasting value. It will be your task to clearly think through the different and difficult situations confronting you. One of the lessons, I trust, you have learned in your school career is the power to think and analyze a difficult situation. This trait will certainly be needed in the years ahead. You will carry with you our best wishes in whatever situation you find yourselves. ' Tis life, whereof our nerves are scant, Oh life, not death, for which we pant; More life, and fuller, that I want. — Tennyson. 2 DEDICATION MISS MATTIE GA1NEY SEVERAL years ago we were fortunate in having a woman come to our school as Math Teacher, who proved to be a friend to all of us and who was ready to listen to our troubles as well as our triumphs. In her, each member of the student body felt as if he had a helper to give advice and offer suggestions that would help him out of his difficulties. To Miss Mattie L. Gainey, for her faithful efforts in classroom teaching, we dedicate this Volume of the Tatler. Senior Class 1947. 3 SENIOR CLASS SONG Tonight we leave Benson High With memories we hold dear. And as we strive to win our future goals We will not fear. We ' ll not forget the happiness here at school Nor all the love and guidance shown us by our teachers. A great love will never be; The war has ended and peace has come again to the world, We have endured the sacrifice with grace and loyalty. We leave our Alma Mater with kindest thoughts, and take our place with those whose purpose is, To honor those they love and also to save all mankind. 4 FACULTY Lejt to right: Miss Margaret Lassiter, English, Geography ; Mrs. Smith, English, French; Miss Gainey, Math, Latin: Mr. Boyd, Science, Coach. Mrs. Fish, Home Economics: Miss Sasser, Eighth Grade; Mrs. Wiggtns, Eighth Grade. 5 GRADE MOTHERS AND FATHER Left to right: Mrs. Paul Johnson, Kyle V. Stephenson. Mrs. L. L. Levinson MASCOTS Sue Lawhorn, C. M. Blackman, Jr. 6 HISTORY OF CLASS When we as freshmen entered high school four years ago, we had to adjust ourselves to many changes in our school life. The three minutes allowed us between classes to get to our rooms seemed almost unreason- able, and it was quite awhile before the halls were clear of late students going to their classes. Our homeroom teacher was Mrs. S. Nordon, a small but determined teacher. Our genius that year was Katharine Gaskins, who won the prize, awarded by Mr. Whittington for making the best grades in the freshman class. Another school year gave us the pride of saying we were sophomores. Our subjects that year were more complicated especially algebra; but with cooperation and hard work with our teacher, Miss Gainey, who also was our homeroom teacher, we managed to pull through. Our gem of our sophcmore class was Margaret Vaughan, who won the prize as the best all around girl. In 1945 we entered our Junior year with a class of only twenty-seven students. Many of the friends entering high school with us had enlisted in service and others had married. Although ours was a small class, having Miss Gainey again for our homeroom teacher helped us to obtain our spotlight in the activities of Benson High. The outstanding event during our Junior year was the Junior-Senior banquet, an occasion, which I ' m sure all present thoroughly enjoyed. The Junior winning the Whittington prize for showing greatest im- provement in grades and sportsmanship was Ermaline Register. At last: our Senior year with only a few months until we have ac- complished cur goal. For our homeroom teacher we have one of the very best, Miss M. Lassiter, whom I ' m sure we will never forget A day to be remembered was Senior day at Chapel Hill. True to custom, it rained that day but in spite of getting wet we had a very nice time. Ermaline Register. 7 SENIOR CLASS Officers CLASS POEM By Laynell Penny As we reach the end Of our Senior year, We think of the things That we hold so dear. First of all, our teachers, To them we owe many debts, For their patience and kindness And examples they have set. Next, our parents Who are waiting to see What examples we will follow And what we will be. And now, our classmates Of whom we are very fond. But soon we must part And think of the years beyond. From these halls we ' ll soon depart And now we say good-bye But we ' ll never forget the memories Of old Benson High. To the future we ' ll look For the things of the best, In God we will trust For our happiness and success. 8 J. B. Benton, Jr. Interested in anything scientific including radios and films.
