Your class is the first to graduate under the 12 year program. Certainly this extra year of school growth and development should be of real value to you. It has been our observation that another year of maturity and growth has been a very great factor in making your class one of dependability and resourcefulness. There is no substitute for maturity and experience. You have the esteem and high regards of the faculty and student body. Your class is unique in another respect. Your graduation from high school comes at a time when the world is in the midst of change from war to peace. The problems confronting us are a challenge to our best thought and action. Truly the world is entering upon a new era. It will be your glorious privilege to share the responsibilities of this post war world. I would urge you to continue your training. Future responsibilities demand consecrated effort and thought. In saying Adieu, we would leave with you this thought from Henry Van Dyke; Four things a man must learn to do If he would keep his record true: To think without confusion clearly; To love his fellow-men sincerely; To act from honest motives purely; To trust in God and Heaven securely. Principal. DEDICATION to Miss Margaret Lassiter As a token of our love and deepest appreciation for your kindness and help which has made again our annual a reality, we, the Senior Class, wish to dedicate with admiration, devotion and sincerity, this, the third volume of The Tatler. For removed from whirling traffic, Of the hustling town, Arched against the brow of heaven, Looks she proudly down. Honors held by victories won, She will cherish to the last, Each one adds a tribute rare, As the years fly past. Though enduring fame be thine, Though thy praises travel far, Truth shall always be thy motto, Wisdom ' s bright alluring star. Alma Mater live forever! MEMORIAL To our most beloved classmates of Benson High who left us before our Senior year to enter the services of our country, and having performed their duties well, we wish to dedicate this page to Benton Stephenson Ralph Edward Medlin Kyle Hunter Stephenson Wade McLamb 13 History of the Class of 1946 It was in September of the year 1942 that seventy-one freshmen entered Benson High, the dear place that we are about to leave as a great part of our past. We never dreamed that this name of freshman was symbolic to us at all, for we knew the older classes too well, and the yearly routine of our small but standing school. We felt of great importance, however, it was our first noticeable change in nine years of school. Our feeling of importance was never really shattered, because we were not green at all. Alas! What fate will do! Our Freshman Class had dwindled to fifty-four sopho- mores. We spent some of our most pleasant moments trying to solve algebra problems and glean a few facts from biology (doubting if we were). Whether we were really successful in our attempts is left entirely to the faculty to decide. Quite reluctantly we left, happy to think we would soon be juniors. When we returned as Juniors thirty-seven strong (Cupid had claimed some of our members), we rallied around our class and selected a group of officers, who did their duty well. Cooperation played a big part in our Junior year and our class became one. Never shall we forget the dear and pleasant memories, that were bestowed upon us. Long shall we cherish fondly the memory of our banquet, held in honor of our upper-classmates, the seniors. But perhaps the most memorable of our entire Junior year was that night on which we assembled to pay tribute to our classmates who were leaving to serve in the armed forces. We soon departed, each to his home for a three months vacation, happy to think that we should return as seniors in the following year. Standing at the portal of the opening year. Yes, this is for us, a class of thirty-five seniors, the year of all years, spelled with capital letters, too. Long did we look forward with great enthusiasm to our Senior Year and we deem ourselves very fortunate indeed as being the first class to graduate from the twelfth grade from Benson High. We foresee many hours of trials (exams) in our pathways as well as many days filled with joy and happiness. To these last months of our senior year in our reminiscences the things that characterize Benson High so well stand out in bold relief. One of our sweetest memories in after days will be that of the hours we spent together with our beloved teacher. As our Senior year is fast drawing to a close, when we, as graduates, shall receive our diplomas, our hearts are filled with joy and sadness. As we look over our past career, we regret that we could do no more than we have done to uphold the ideals of Benson High. May we prove ourselves worthy of the emblems and privileges accorded to us and may we ever remain true to our Alma Mater, going forth from dear old Benson High as typical representatives of noble man and womanhood and everything good in life. 14 Last Will and Testament STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA County of Johnston Benson High School Town of Benson We the class of ' 46, departing from this dear old building where we through these many years have gained our knowledge, declare this our last will and testament, leaving unto our successors our dearest and most beloved possessions here at Benson High School.
