Wtsrking with equations and formulas are the math, science, and industrial arts depart- ments. Roberta Kiewit teaches algebra and is Y-Teen sponsor. Paul Ackerson handles physics, general science, driving, and directs the light crew for stage productions. Max Wfinter teaches mechanical drawing and is in charge of the stage crew. Shop instructor is Charles Snyder. Sponsor of the Hi-Y, Clark Raser, also teaches general math. School treasurer, Lloyd Darrow, teaches biology and sponsors the Ologists. Head of the science department, Charles Matthews, is a chemistry teacher, tennis coach, senior sponsor, and Chess club sponsor. John Kurtz is a geometry and algebra teacher. Miss Ella Barrett, not pictured, is head of the mathe- matics department. Four elective departments which help round out the activities of the school are art, for- eign language, ROTC, and homemaking. Sgt. Archie Cernaghan and Sgt. Joseph Peres worked together this year in organizing the ROTC. Spanish instructor and sponsor of El Circulo Espanol is Mrs. Mary Weetli. Art instructor and Art club sponsor is Miss Jose- phine Shively. Mrs. Marjorie Hornberger teaches Latin, sponsors SPQR, counsels the sophomore girls, and is a senior sponsor. Miss Marjorie Eloerchinger, not pictured, homemaking teacher and sponsor, is also a senior sponsor. Miss Esther Weitkatnp, head of the busi- ness department, is a type and bookkeeping instructor. Co-sponsor of the Junior Red Cross, Mrs. Alice Tesar, teaches shorthand, transcription, and type. Teaching business arithmetic and law and bookkeeping is Mrs. Edith Smith. Mrs. Kathryn Kendall teaches office practice, shorthand, and transcription. Miss Ehrma Donley, who teaches type, is head senior sponsor. Teaching sales and sponsoring the Co-ops is Miss Alene Crop- per.

Facult One of the most important assets of the school is the teacher. Members of the Ben- son High faculty make it their responsibility to teach and guide each and every student. Pictured on the preceding page are Principal Earl Schroer, general superviser of the fac- ulty and students, and Assistant Principal john Aronson, also senior boys' counselor. The largest department in Benson is the Eng- lish department. The teachers are pictured from left to right, Miss Mabel Rasmussen is a newcomer to Benson this year. Miss Gertrude Dieterichs taught English VIII for the first time this year. Co-director of the Christmas play this year was Mrs. Anna Cass. Head of the department is Gunnar Horn, adviser of the Benson High News and Cu- pola. Mrs. Doris Stevens, speech teacher, directs three plays each year and sponsors the Thespians. Miss Gladys Line is sponsor of the Science-Fiction club. Mrs. Irene johnson, English teacher, also teaches French and sponsors the French club. Mrs. Helen Maynard is strictly an English teacher. Debate and golf coach, Arthur King, also manages to teach modern problems, world history, and to sponsor NFL. Miss Alice Horsfall, librarian, helps students find books and reference material needed for their lessons. Teaching English are Mrs. Blanche Swan, junior girls, counselor, and Miss Helen Yont, junior Red Cross co- sponsor. The social studies department consists of eight teachers. Mrs. Mabel Carlson, fresh- man girls' counselor, is also co-sponsor of the Student Council. Junior Red Cross co- sponsor is Miss Lucille Barbe. Mrs. Eula Ross is a veteran at history. Sponsor of the Benson High Forum is Dan Wilcox. Miss Bertie Hoag, head of the department, spon- sored the Xenophon club. Freshman boys' counselor is Miss Verna Dillow. Miss Eva jones, co-sponsor of the Student Council, senior girls' counselor, teaches senior math besides American government. '

Franklin Brown, director of instrumental music, producer of the ABC Revue, sponsors the IMD. Students graduate in the best of health under the supervision of Nurse Grace Jardine. Mrs. Regina Place, director of Ben- .ron Blfzcffoam, also is in charge of the vocal music department. Assistant to Mrs. Place is Miss Bernice Grunwald. Library clerk is Mrs. Joanne Owen. Assist- ing in the office routine are Secretaries Miss Marguerite Zweifel, Mrs. Gwendolyn Alberti, and Miss Virginia Maxwell. John Haney, head custodian, has the responsibility of keeping the school clean for the students. Mrs. Marie Savage is in charge of the book- room. Head of the cafeteria is Mrs. Alice Moore, who is not pictured. Teaching physical education takes up not only school time, but also after-school hours to perfect each sport. Cecil Sharer, besides coaching the freshman boys' football team last fall, teaches biology, driving, and coun- sels sophomore boys. Miss May Leach is in charge of girls' sports. Assisting Miss Leach was Mrs. joan Jones, who was later replaced by Mrs. Jessie Patterson. Veteran coach of varsity football, freshman basketball, and track is Arthur Harris, who also sponsors the Boys' O-Club and counsels junior boys. Newcomer John Johnette, who teaches world geography, algebra, and general science, assisted Mr. Harris in varsity football, coached the second team in basketball, is freshman baseball coach, and sponsors the Science-Math club. Mrs. Margaret Olson is accompanist and keeps records in the girls' gym department. Edward Orcutt, who teaches biology, is varsity basketball, baseball, and second team football coach.
