Haney ENGINEER O. M. Egolf MISS BARRETT, MISS JONES, MISS LEACH CUT ANNIVERSARY CAKE Silver Anniversary Silver anniversaries are something to be proud of, so Benson is justly proud of her twenty- five years at the corner of Fifty-second and Maple streets. Teachers, too, are celebrating silver anniversaries. Miss Ella Barrett, Miss Eva jones, and Miss May Leach have played an important part in the lives of Benson students for twenty- five years. Math, government,.and girls, gym students are indebted to them for the hard work and patience of these three instructors. Putting on the Annual Benson Capers revue each year occupies Miss jones and Miss Leach a good part of the school year. There are others who have been at Benson almost as many years as these teachers. No matter what the word conditions, the teachers at Benson have fulfilled their duties. The extent of their service is exemplified by those Benson graduates who have attained success in the professions, business, entertainment, science, and sports, Even though the school has seen its enrollment grow to double the intended capacity of the building, the patience and hard work of the faculty has resulted in a high standard of education. Benson has seen the happy, frivolous Twenties, the bankrupt, depressed Thirties, the warring, turbulent Forties, and views, thoughtfully, the beginning of the Fifties. Twenty-five Years of Datelines JANUARY 9, 1927 The Benson High sewing class is hem- ming towels for the cafeteria which will be ready for use February 7. MARCH 30, 1928 No more will the Benson Central school building hold memories for those who attended school there as the build- ing has been condemned. FEBRUARY S, 1929 Never absent since the second grade, Mary Alice Howe has maintained a perfect record during the past seven and one-half years. Measles prevented her record from being eight and one-half years. MAY 29, 1930 Lunch hour usually announces itself with the clatter of hurried feet. A group of students walked leisurely into the cafeteria. Others followed, without the haste, noise, or boisterousness that usually accompanies the procedure. At a glance, one could recognize the order- liness and efficiency with which Benson High is managed. MARCH 12, 1931 Teachers walked around with elated smiles. A new rug had been purchased for their study. A committee of three teachers selected the rug. One represent- ed the dignity of the school. Another would not spend one cent more than necessary. The third went along to kid the salesman. OCTOBER 13, 1932 C. E. Jones, the electrical wizard, re- turned to Benson High to give his second program in which he demon- strated television. APRIL 27, 1933 Seeing horror in feminine eyes, Mrs. Ida Wood spied a baby mouse. With no ado she slew the mouse with her pointer. It was removed to the waste basket to be cremated by the janitor. Mouse is survived by a mother, father, and five sisters. APRIL 12, 1934 The girls have invaded the ping-pong room. Many were the cries of joy when they discovered that they too could play. The fact that no girls were allowed during the boys' tournament had irked them considerably, but now the girls are going to have a tournament of their own. NOVEMBER 15, 1935 Benson's football Bunnies reached the end of a rainbow Thursday afternoon at Tech field and found a real pot of gold-an Interstate high school champ- ionship. NOVEMBER 14, 1936 Construction of a stadium and athletic field for Benson High was a dream for 10 years, the school board president said, in dedicating the stadium Friday. DECEMBER 17, 1937 There are thirteen in Miss Helen Yont's Braille class which meets every Thursday. They learn to transcribe print- ing into Braille. After 10 lessons and a test, they start work on a forty-page manuscript to be passed upon in Wash- ington, D. C. OCTOBER 14, 1938 A group of Vassar girls, a Cincinnati politician and his daughter are the prin- cipal characters in the operetta, The Prince of Pilsen, to be given by the senior glee clubs. OCTOBER 13, 1939 Soldiers wander about Benson's athle- tic field in a daze endeavoring to master the new streamlined drill! The squad of eight men has been changed to twelve, instead of marching in ranks, they march abreast, instead of raising their elbow in right dress, they touch the shoulder of the man on their left. OCTOBER 11, 1940 Girls should be able to repair a broken iron cord, declares R. B. Dub- ler, shop instructor. The course is to teach students how to do simple jobs around home. He recalls that a class of girls he had two years ago learned more quickly than the boys. DECEMBER 5, 1941 A dime was offered any student in General Math 1 who could name a part of everyday life that did not depend upon mathematics. As a result of the discussion, students admitted that math- ematics is a practical subject. OCTOBER 23, 1942 Considering that the scrap pile on the walk obstructed traffic to a certain extent, I think the fire drill October 13, was pretty good, stated Earl Schroer, assistant principal. DECEMBER 8, 1943 P.U. It smells! is the general greet- ing to the Benson High News. We know it refers to the odor of fresh newsprint. But this aroma is not repellent to all. Many a weary journalist is revived after a gruelling week of news hunting by the pungent smell of fresh newsprint. MARCH 10, 1944 The labor shortage hit Benson last week as no regular cheerleaders were available for the game. The problem was solved by three teachers who proved superior. NOVEMBER 2, 1945 Do you know of something around our school that could be improved? If any of you havenit been able to tell someone about your pet peeve, here's your chance. The Student Council has appointed a special committee to see that Benson High's progress is continued at a fast pace. APRIL 25, 1946 For the first time at Benson, all grad- uating seniors were required to take a review test on American history. MAY 9, 1947 In memory of 79 Benson High boys who died in World War II, the Benson High Boosters club memorial organ and chimes were dedicated in the school auditorium Thursday evening, May 1. FEBRUARY 6, 1948 Mama may think her son is an angel but to 31 Benson athletes initiated into the Boys' O-Club he was more of a devil. Blindfolded, the aspirants were taken to the initiation room. Here as a warmer- up for the ordeal, paddles were wielded on the proper place and a soothing red-hot salve applied. MAY 20, 1949 One kitten and nineteen students took the necessary vows and became Thes- pians May 19 at the spring initiation. MARCH 31, 1950 Miss Mary McNamara, principal of Benson High, announced her retire- ment Wednesday, March 29 to take effect August 31. The announcement came as a surprise to faculty and stud- ents. DECEMBER 21, 1951 We have come a long, long way, proudly stated former principal, Miss Mary McNamara. Many of her memories of the past 25 years concern Benson high school, for it was through her con- tinual efforts that Benson has achieved its high reputation. JANUARY 18, 1952 The fog rolled in and the dust rolled out , as the students in Room 202 open- ed windows to keep from suffocating. The cause was that artists had left their creations on the desks. Ten minutes of sandpapering each period cleared the desks for a new generation of artists. ri'-'ffl Ml FALK, SWERRE, YELICK, EDSON-READY TO FACE THE WORLD Class of '52 History has been made at Fifty-second and Maple streets. This year, l952, marks the silver anniversary of the school's existance and the graduation of the freshman class of 1948. Benson has changed since 1926. Her growth in athletics, enrollment, activities, scholar- ship, and importance has paved a path of success in her history books. How could four years have gone so fast? But it really was fun! Maybe not the final exams, the term papers, the Senior English and math tests or the tuberculosis skin test but the gym revues, plays, activities programs, athletic contests, military balls, and the Friday mornings when the Newt came out made life at Benson seem wonderful. First under the heading Class of l952 in Bensonls annals is the senior election. Boosting their parties by handing out pamphlets, donuts, flowers, caps, and namecards, the 6 tickets fcarried on a vigorous three-day campaign. When the votes were counted, Bob Falk became president of the class. Bob Edson won the second spot as vice president. Ingrid Swerre and Roxanne Yelick were chosen secretary and treasurer. We had hardly caught our breath from the elections when the campaign for the Cupola sales got underway. The efforts of everyone concerned combined to send the scale over the 1200 mark to top the school's enrollment of ll93. This excitement had hardly died when we elected Beverly Campbell and Ronald Smith the Kathleen and Patrick of our class, and chose Ann Andreasen the Benson Lions Queen. Throughout disturbances such as measuring for caps and gowns and collecting banquet money, our sponsors, Miss Ehrma Donley, Miss Gertrude Dieterichs, Mrs. Blanche Swan, and Miss Marjorie Floerchinger kept order in homeroom. Their suggestions on conduct- ing senior elections and the senior banquet helped us to get the most out of our senior vear. Twenty-five years ago on June 14, the junior-Senior banquet theme was The Stage . This year on May 28, following a journalistic theme entitled Special Editionu, Managing Editor ftoastmasterj Joe Hanna introduced the publishers Ingrid Swerre and Bob Edson who spoke on l'The 10 Best News Stories. Next on the program were Reporters Miriam Wyrens and Phil Patterson who talked on Nose for Newsf' Brick-bats and Bouquetsu by janet Woods and Wendell Walker followed. Completing the program was Cover your Beat by Editor-in-chief Earl Schroer. The next day found Benson giving out with a more subdued air as the seniors blissfully accepted a legal skip day. Baccalaureate was held June 1 at Dundee Presbyterian Church with Robert Scanland ad- dressing the graduates. The Benson high school auditorium was the scene of graduation for the 15 members of the class of '27, Times have changed and the classes have grown so that this year Benson's 265 seniors will graduate in the larger Technical high school auditorium. The pages of the history book are closed, but only figuratively. For the senior class will never forget its four wonderful years in high school. May Benson high school long remember the class of 52. Q Activities Student Council members kept order in the halls and during lunch in the cafeteria and served as the governing body of the students. A new plan was begun whereby several stu- dents were exchanged with other schools every other Tuesday to learn more about the func- tions of other schools. junior Red Cross representatives held three parties for Clearview Home and provided birthday cards for all of its residents. They collected 3126.48 with the annual Valentine Drive for the library. The Red Cross dance, the Criss-Crosser, was held at Benson. Undertaking the most difficult task of their career, the stage crew built a showboat for Benson's gym revue. They also constructed the stage settings for play productions presenta- tions. Assisting the faculty by doing its secretarial work is the ofiice practice class. It also per- formed a service to the community by addres- sing 8,000 envelopes for the Cancer Fund. The premiere of Pleafe Admit was given in the fall by the play production class. It was fol- lowed by the annual Christmas play which was presented only to students as the weather made an evening performance impossible. The Aci- mimble Crichton was the J. M. Barrie play presented in the spring. Vocal and instrumental music departments highlighted numerous performances during the year. The vocal music department provided the background music for the Christmas play and much of the singing for gym revue, lt also gave a concert in the spring. The instru- mental music department lent its talent to the gym revue, football games, school dances, the County Fair at Vlfaterloo, as well as conducting two concerts of its own. E? COL. RODGER LINDWALL ROTC ..w'm 's:s,.. SERGEANTS CERNEGHAN, HANSEN, PERES CAPTAIN FITZSIMMONS Sa 2 if 3, E 3 E 32 DU Day, May 6, came off without a hitch as the Bunny Battalion showed the inspect- ing officers and the spectators at the Federal Inspection that their sometime sleepy-eyed early morning parades, reviews, and road marches had been to good advantage. With the stadium as a background the battalion was an impressive sight. Classroom work during the winter months showed its value when students were faced with the written part of the examination. Another highlight of the ROTC year was the annual Recog- nition night when the last parade of the year was held and awards and honors of the year were announced. On February l5 all eyes were turned to Peony Park ballroom to witness the result of many weeks' work and the revealing of the Lieutenant Colonel. Leading the grand march at the sixteenth annual Military Ball were Lieutenant Colonel Rodger Lindwall and his lady, Miss Sandra Speicher. This year as always the grand march and officers' waltz were under the direction of Miss May Leach. Long hours of hard work paid off as the Crack Squad of '52 performed at the Military Ball to an appreciative applause. This yearls squad was under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Rodger Lindwall and Captain Robert Falk. Their performance at the Shrine Circus was another example of precision and balance. The announcement of next year's commanders, Bill Kampfe and Benjamin Belmont, and the best Crack Squad cadet, Kenneth Moorhead, were highlights of the annual Crack Squad banquet. Topping all competition in the city and taking fifth in the Hearst match this yearls Rifle team set a high standard for the following teams to shoot for. The team was made up of eight men with Major Bill Morris taking top honors as high scorer. Battalion Staff Mason. Fdsmx 'f ef' q Club Life Out of the past come many of the most im- portant organizations of Benson high school- the clubs. ART CLUB had its beginning as far back as 1931. Led by its sponsor, Miss Josephine Shively, it has ably fulfilled its purpose of service by making tray favors and lending the appearance of stained glass windows to classroom doors at Christmas. CAMERA CLUB was first organized under the leadership of Roy C. Busch in 1938. Its main objective was to study the art and science of photography. However, the club was discon- tinued and did not reorganize until 1951 un- der Joe Ihm. The present sponsor is Lloyd Darrow. CHESS CLUB participates each year in a tout- nament and its sponsor, Earl Schroer, presents the winner with a trophy on Honor Day. This club began in 1939 with 25 members. CO-OPS promotes sociability and develops more efficient cooperation with business firms. It was begun in 1939 and has enabled many students to work part-time. In this way they gain experience in retail selling. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS is one of the oldest of Benson's clubs, beginning in 1951 with Mrs. Irene johnson as sponsor. It promotes interest in French and in the lives and customs of the French people. HI-Y combines each year with the Y-Teens to present Lenten services. Since 1955 its ideals have been to create high standards of Christian character among its members and to develop them in many activities. HOMEMAKING CLUB members sponsor a monthly bake sale in the front hall. The club stresses training of members to be leaders in home and community life. The Home Eco- nomics Club was its first name and in later years it was known as Se-Co. In 1950 it took its present name. 2 5 5 - E-.53 l i gg Q 2 l E ii - 4 - 1'-' SPQR is another old standby among school clubs. Under the guidance of Mrs. Sadie Schaff- nit it has continued through the years to carry out its purpose of showing members the bene- fits of Latin in present day life. NATURE CLUB made its debut in 1952 with Lloyd Darrow as its sponsor. It was organized by a group of students who are interested in hiking and studying fish, birds, insects, plants, and animals. NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE made its appearance in 1931. This organization works to promote better speech and clearer thinking among high school debaters. Debate coach Arthur King is the sponsor. EL CIRCULO ESPANOL made its appearance in 1932 and held as its purpose an interest in Spanish and Spanish speaking countries. Its first sponsor was Miss Effie Durgan, but the reins changed to Mrs. Mary Weetli two years ago. THESPIANL was newly organized as a Ben- son club in 1947 under Mrs. Doris Stevens. It is an honorary society composed of out- standing students in the dramatics field. XENOPHON CLUB made its appearance in the club spotlight in 1956. Under the leader- ship of its sponsor, Miss Bertie Hoag, it has become affiliated with the Nebraska Junior Historical Society. Y-TEENS has as its annual project the dressing of dolls for the Good Fellows. The girls also presented Lenten services with the Hi-Y un- der the guidance of the club sponsor, Miss Roberta Kiewit. 3? it L if 1 2 5 ,?- E 5 -ri if if l : : -Z : -2 9? 5 2 5 g ' ' Fine. FNB Hi .L COACHES SHARER, KING, MATTHEWS ORCUTT, HARRIS Football Bunny gridsters showed themselves to be only slightly better than last year's team. The record, however, does not show the whole truth. Benson was set back by bad breaks such as fumbles and intercepted passes. Although the defense was good, the offense was seldom up to par. Despite the hard luck which resulted in a dismal season the team remained one of the best spirited in the history of Benson. The season began with Central trouncing the Bunnies 21-7, South 22-7, and Fremont 15-O. They improved enough to tie the Tech High Maroons 7-7 and walk over Thomas Jef- ferson 31-l5 before falling before the North High Vikings. At this game the Hates established a new record for passes thrown in one game by one team in the Intercity league. The gridsters amassed a total of 27 passes to break the former record held by St. joseph. Unfortunately, however, only 9 of these passes were completed. Cold weather and a raw wind combined with a blasting l5-6 defeat at the hands of Lincoln Northeast to close a dreary season. Rodger Lindwall, stalwart center and line- backer proved himself worthy of the All-City, All-State awards which he received. Other outstanding players were Jack Brandt, who did most of the Bunny scoring, and a pair of fine runners, joe Hanna and Chuck Reynolds. .2 2 2 g ? 3? The cagers, after downing Wahoo 45-31, and North 39-28, just managed to squeeze by Central with a 34-33 win and went on to beat Tech 45-40 to place top in the lntercity league. The Bunnies were stopped short by a 47-32 defeat at the hands of Creighton Prep in a game which as a whole was a contrast between a hot team and a team off the mark. They recovered in time to win over South 39-32, which put them into a second place tie with Tech. They continued by defeating Thomas Jefferson 71-32, and North 53-35. The hapless Hates were floored by Central and Fremont with scores respectively of 47-38 and 62-42. The Bensonites bounced back with a 36-33 upset over South and a surprising victory of 37-36 over Creighton Prep. Columbus was downed 45-39, but Grand Island and Tech proved to be too much for the Bunnies to handle. The season wound up with Benson being knocked out of the city tournament in the first round. The Bunnies were matched against Creighton Prep who downed them 39-35. Ron Smith, one of Benson's top players was elected honorary captain of the World- Herald's All-Intercity team. John Morse, another outstanding player on the team, re- ceived an honorable mention. Along with the help of John Trenerry, Tom Mitchell, Bill Mlaska, and Buster McCoun, Benson had a fine team. A graduate of Omaha University, Miss Leach has been the driving force behind the development of the Benson gym department. Miss Leach recalls that her first project was starting the Girls, O-Club, top organization in the gym. Immediate additions were the GAA, the largest club, the pep squads, begun as a combined boys' and girls' yell squad, the cheerleaders, and, more recently, the B-Club, jeans Club, Rifle Club, and the girls' soccer field, Miss Leach's special dream-come-true. Starting as a part-time history teacher, Miss Leach doesn't regret her switch to Phys. Ed. She is proudest of the fact that Benson girls respond so enthusiastically to the gym program. I don't think you'd Hnd a more interested group of girls anywhere in the U.S.,,' she says. They're hard to beat. Thinking of her gym classes of 25 years ago Miss Leach remembers that We had to get permission for the girls to roll their black stockings below their knees. It was con- sidered very daringf' Her class program has expanded from a volleyball course to in- clude tennis, badminton, archery, basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, and dancing. These activities she conducts with the help of Mrs. Anne Morrison and Mrs. Margaret Olson. Miss Leach has always hoped for a swimming pool but included in her picture of the future she sees two more gyms built over the locker rooms and out-door volleyball and cageball courts. It's a good thing we don't have all these things though, she declares, 'ifor not having makes you keep on working and planning. L? F? Lrozicr. johnson. Mucllcr. Burge. Davis. Koldcric. S.
