Student Activities STUDENT COUNCIL is the governing body of the school representative of all students. It is the Councils job to enact and enforce rules in order to keep the school running smoothly. The Council added an amendment to its Articles dealing with membership and elections. The Council now requires members to maintain grades of 5 or above. Candidates must fill out applications instead of being nominated as formerly. As its Red Cross project the Council sent three Care Boxes to Europe. JUNIOR RED CROSS has the motto, Always there when needed lending a helping hand. Each year the Benson chapter of the junior Red Cross furnishes special projects to be carried out by the various homerooms in the school. This years big project was the National Children Fund dance. OEEICE PRACTICE is the organization which supplies clerical help to faculty and oilice. The work of this class, taught by Mrs. Kathryn Kendall, is to take dictation, file, and mimeograph for the ollice or teachers. This practice is helpful in preparing them for jobs after graduation. STAGE AND LIGHT CREVUS provide lighting effects, scenery, and props for the stage productions throughout the year, Sponsored by Max Wfinter and Paul Ackerson. the crews were behind the scenes at Qlldlffj' Slreei. Ar You Like Il. and Bezziwz Blacknzzli. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC provided music between halves of the football games and also during play of the District and State Basketball tournaments. Bedecked in their new uniforms the band played at the Douglas County Fair at Waterltwtm. The All-city orchestra conducted by Emanuel Wishnow and the All-city band conducted by Dr. Willizim D. Ravelli were also included in the activities of the department. Under the leadership of LeRoy Giles the band presented its second annual Sunday afternoon band concert. VOCAL MUSIC revived old-time vaudeville with the Be11.ro1z Blackoulr of 1950. It was highlighted by moving hands to the tune of Dry Bones. The production featured the Senior Choir and individual acts by the Madrigals and Voice class. Other undertakings of the department, under the direction of Mrs. Regina Place, were providing music for the Christmas play, A Child Ir Born. and Commencement exercises, and putting on the annual Spring Festival. The grand finale of the concert was the entire chorus singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic dedicated to Miss Mary McNamara, retiring principal. Early in the fall the All-city choir under the guest direction of Peter Tkach included all five choirs of the public high schools. SPEECH DEPARTMENT, headed by Mrs. Doris Stevens, highlighted the school year with its three annual productions. Shakespeare found a place before the footlights in the departments fall production of Ar You Like II. Stephen Vincent Benet's play, A Child Ir Born. added to the spirit of the Christmas season, and Qualify Street by M. Barrie was presented in the spring. For the aspiring young Hayes or Olivier there is the Thespian Troupe which is open to students doing outstanding work in the department. v Q2 8 'FW V gg OFF lCliRS President ................ ,Calvin Kuskzi Vice President ............
