Bunny High and how he grew . . . Shortly after the turn of the century in 1904 in the city of Omaha a bouncing baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Omaha High School Education. After great deliberation, the proud parents named him Benson High. As he grew older, his pals nicknamed him Bunny. There were four children in the Education family besides Bunny . . . two boys, South and Tech, and two girls, Central and North. Appointed Bunny's guardian was Mr. John Speedie who was in charge of Bunny's home at 60th and Maple for eight years. In 1911 the 11th and 12th grades were added to Bunny's two year course and a new guardian was named. Miss Margaret Fedde was her name. In September, 1911, Miss Mary McNamara became young Education's guide. And this is the story of Bunny High and how he grew . . . From the very beginning Bunny showed evidence of leadership and progressiveness. Although he was the smallest of the five children, he often equaled and even surpassed their feats. Always enterprising, industrious, and upftofdate, Bunny, when he was only eight, organized his first athf letic team. Eight years later he bounded home with the Nebraska state trophy, Class E. That was only the beginning of a long list of victories, trophies, titles and crowns which Bunny brought tri' umphantly home. He has advanced to Class A in all sports and has filled his trophy case with evidence of his athletic prowess. How Bunny could play golf. In 1930 for the third consecutive year, he won the Interstate meet and trophy. In 1931 he proved himself a mighty fast little rabbit when he ran away with the city track title. In 1935 he fought his way with the pigskin over the goal line to both the Intercity and the Interstate crowns. Developing in basketball slowly, in 1938 he won the Intercity and Interstate titles. From that time on, Bunny grew in basketball skill until this year he won the Intercity, Interstate, District crowns and was runnerfup in the State. Being skillful in all sports, Bunny became so interested in athletics that he entreated his parents to build him a stadium. This wish they granted in 1936 as a reward for the fighting spirit and good sportsmanship which Bunny had shown. In 1918 he joined the Omaha school system. Bunny was growing so fast that he needed room to stretch. In 1926 the ground was broken for a new building with a capacity for 800. December 17, Bunny took over his new home on 52nd and Maple strccts. Bunny was such a distinctive personality that all his associates, in order that it might be known that they were Bunny's friends, called themselves the Benson Bunnies. In 1927 Bunny made his debut when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omaha High School Educaf tion, formally introduced him at an Open House. Not only was Bunny interested in athletics and the three R's , but he also believed in the cultural aspects of education. In 1930, he entered his first District and State Music contests. Conf sistently has Bunny won excellent ratings for his singing voice and his instrument playing. He has also produced fine operettas. In oratory, too, Bunny has always shone. Talented as a debater and speaker, he holds countless first places. His journalistic ability came forth when the Benson High News received Hrst class rating. His paper, the last three consecutive times, has won the AllfAmerif can award. He and his pals have always placed well in various Quill and Scroll contests. Bunny also is a recognized scientist. In the fall of 1936 Bunny became a marching military man when the first ROTC classes were organized and in 1937 he was appointed Cadet Lt. Col. at the Hrst Military Ball which was held at the Central club. For three years the ball took place there but since then it has been held at the Peony Park ballroom. In 1939 Bunny's parents adopted Monroe, and Bunny and his new little sister began to have a grand time together. When the explosion of the jap's treachery hit Pearl Harbor and sounded and resounded through' out the spirit of the American people, Bunny devoted himself to the winning of this war. He co' operated in the scrap drive, he contributed to collections to aid those hit by the dread impact of war. He is aiding the Red Cross, he is collecting grease, he is sending games and books to USO centers, he contributes apples and oranges to the Union Pacific canteen every Friday. Bunny has organized a Victory Corps and is stressing athletics, mathematics and science in order to fit him' self for the armed services. Thirty'nine years ago Bunny was born. He is now in the midst of his second war. Throughout the years Bunny has always kept abreast of the times. At present he is learning radio, blueprint reading, camouflageg he is taking a preflight course, and he is enrolled in the commercial classes, preparing himself to fill office jobs thereby releasing men for combat serv' ice. Bunny is a grand person waving the colors of the green and white. He's someone who we Ben' son Bunnies have known for four years, and will remember a lifetime. Under the supervision of the Victory Corps, all school organizations assumed the responsibility of filling a large Red Cross quota and aiding in every way possihle the nation's war effort. Each cluh chose a project, organized groups of workers, and set out to reach high production goals. The attainment of these goals may he seen in their records of completed articles. Always recognized as an important part of a students school life, cluhs gained a new importance through their participation in vital war work. Service Organizations Service with a smile could well be adopted as the motto of three of the school's leading organizations. Whether it be participating in student government, delivering an office call to a forgetful student, or selling war stamps in homeroom, members of the Student Council, Office Messengers, and junior Red Cross are always ready to help. Good citizenship, scholarship, and general dependability describes any or all of the members of these groups, for they are chosen upon this basis. The helpfulness of these students is not confined merely to everyday routine, for in accordance with current demands, almost all of them have helped with rationing, Red Cross drives, U.S.Q. drives, and other types of war work. OFFICE NIESSENGERS AND HALL DUTY Barber, Ramer, Wallace, Sapicnza, Peterson. Stahl, Bradley, O'Kcefe, Hoerner, Bixton, E. This is no mystery to the members of the office messenger group and the doorkeepers, for it is their daily job to do these things. About 52 students have been engaged in this work during the current year under the direction of Miss Ada Morgan. Some of their other duties consist of carrying messages, checking passes, and directing visitors in the building. STUDENT QOUNCIL I S E E Q 1, 1 ': Z C Q 11 :J -.. V2 J U II Q 5 2 . H he t IH Victory Corps The Victory Corps is playing a new but im' portant role in the activities of students. The or- ganization, with a membership totalling more than five hundred, is carrying out war service programs and preparing students for participation in the war effort. There are six different divisions-general, air, land, sea, production, and community-each having requirements and activities relating to that special field. Some form of physical fitness program is necessary for membership in any division. The general membership group is the largest of the six divisions. The qualifications for it include participation in a physical fitness program and par' ticipation in some school, home, or community service such as Red Cross, U. S. O.. farm aid, and scale model airplane building. The Air Service Division is for students plan' ning for service in the armed forces as aviation cadets or aircraft workers. The requirements of this group are related to the training necessary for that type of work and include courses in physics, mathe' matics, pre-flight aeronautics, or courses providing preliminary preparation for the servicing and mainf tenance of aircraft. For students whose interests and training lead to preparation for military service in some branch of the ground forces of the army, the Land Service Division is organized. Requirements include courses in mathematics, laboratory science shop courses, or certain prefinduction courses. Students who are interested in preparing them' selves for service in the Navy or Merchant Marine belong to the Sea Service Division. The require' ments for this division are courses in mathematics, laboratory science, or those which will prepare the student for the type of sea service in which he is interested. Members of the Production Service Division are preparing themselves for service in war inf dustry, agriculture, or other essential civilian prof ductive occupations. One of the requirements of this division is that the student must be engaging in partftime work, either paid or voluntary, in some form of production. Students belonging to the Community Service Division are planning and have begun preparation for work in community or other service occupations such as commercial service, social work, teaching, medicine or other professional services, and home' making. Each member must be doing some part' time work, either paid or voluntary, in some form of community work. Lu Lu .1 LD on 2 K Q '15 T-rl o :a z o 5'-1 A Q 1 nf. E va .uc o lil rf 4: U fu 'Q V? Military training was the only school subject that was doing a wartime job before Pearl Harbor. That job was pref fl? paring men for future years so that they could take com- N mand of any situation whether in civilian life or on the LN battlefield. ' Most notable change in the battalion's program this 'g 4 X year was the substituting of 70 'LVictory rifles for some 160 Army Springfields that were turned over to army train' us Q ing centers. The annual banquet was called for the dura' I nay tion of the war. I The unit was under new direction this year, in fact under the direction of a man who knows the battalion better than many, for Sergeant Harry Balster is a former Benson High student, and was one of the unit's officers back in X Al 1937 when the battalion was still in its infancy. Early morning parades were held this spring regularly on Wednesday and Friday at 7 a. m. The purpose of these marchings was to perfect and maintain battalion formations and to give each company ceremonial marching practice. This spring all the ROTC battalions in the city, Benf son, Central, North, and South, were combined into a city regiment. A commanding colonel was chosen at a Regif mental Field Day held in May at Creighton Stadium. As a finale to a successful and colorful year of ROTC activities at Benson, the annual battalion Field Day was held late in May. At this time many officers for the coming year were advanced to commissioned posts. Recognition was also given to the different groups for their achievements during the year. 4 L N 4' r N X, M if Z' if CJ' GFFICERS AND COLORS McKenzie, XVhelan, Adams, Plank. Also Victory Corps work has played an important part in the club-s activities this year. RYES ESE R i-l CC Q3 E 5 rf. il -6 E f- d 2 Ill 1' Q 4 . In accordance with the nationfwide Physical Fitness program, regulation exerf cises were added to both the boys' and girls' gym work. The addition of ropefclimbing was an indication of this, as were also the obstacle races and endurance tests held at various times. As preliminary training for possible military service, the girls have been or- ganized into platoons with commanding oificers in charge. In the boys' gym department, a new demerit system has been added in which points are given for citizenship and attitude. k'Five times around the gym, means only one thing, and the male gymsters go into action at this command. So keyed up to the present war emergency, all classes have shown a new aware- ness of, and added interest in, their physical education work. 1942 Football Team When the dust settled back on the gridiron, records revealed Benson's griddcrs turned the tide in the last three games of the year by upsetting Tee jay, North, and Lincoln Northeast. They salvaged enough of their pigskin season to win four battles while dropping three. Most thrilling game of the year was with Tech. The last few seconds found Benson on the Maroons' 6finch line, with the score tied at thirteen all. Time ran out before the Bunnies could drive over, but one more play might have turned the trick. At the end of the year Benson was rated in the Top Ten rankings, holding seventh place. The Green and Wliite eleven tied North for the Interstate but finished low in the Intercity. 1. Once more a group of Journalism students, in this case nine girls, have combined initiative and hard work to produce a book that will be a volume of memories to its owners. I hope it will mean even more to the majority who have purchased a copy. For this year changes in Benson's school life, due to the war, appear in the Cupola. They appear to remind everyone that youth-high school students---realize the seriousness of war and know the work they can do to help. Each club that has undertaken a project to aid the war effort is to be commended. Each student who has given time and effort to roll Red Cross bandages, knit, sew, paste scrapbooks, or make checker' boards can rightly feel that he is doing his part to win the war. The amount of war stamps and bonds purchased speaks for itself. The work the teachers have done these last two semesters and the guidance they have so often given rate merit. Few students realize the hours their teachers have spent in preparation for classes. Especially will the Seniors remember this last year, its ups and downs-A-English tests and Senior Mzith reviewg the Military Ball, Senior Banquet-'ebecause it is their last year at Benson, We seniors are leaving you juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen to 611 our places, to study and plan as we did in Benson, and to gain all we have from our years here. The Cupola stall and l hope this hook will mean as much to you as it does to us who have watched it grow. We have tried to set in type a part of Benson your Benson to remember always.
