Nothing aids more in preparing for better citizenship and maintaining this way of life than the actual experience in democratic living gained through participation in school activities. Active work in club meetings teaches students how to achieve worthwhile objectives. Through the Student Council they gain leadership and responsibility and develop a more democratic attitude toward their fellow students through the system of representative government. The Red Cross stresses cooperation and aid to fellow humans through na- tional and local service programs. Invaluable for promoting self-reliance and tolerance are classes in journalism. Debate similarly teaches students to take an impartial view of a subject and to think swiftly and accurately. Prominent among the future outstanding citizens of our country will be those who develop strong bodies and minds through their high school physical education program. A finer appreciation of art and music and an opportunity for expression are obtained through group work that furthers the individuals interests in these activities. Through military drill offered by ROTC, leadership, cooperation, and the ability to follow instructions are learned. Because of the character-building qualities of these extra-curricular activities, high school students are better prepared in thought, word, and deed, to serve their community and nation. L K 5 I 4-0 OFFICE MESSENGERS CALVIN OLSON Preridenl of Sludent Council SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS Service to the school is the primary objective of the Student Council, junior Red Cross, and Office Messengers. Members of these groups voluntarily devote time and effort to effect greater coordination within the school. The performance of these various tasks affords the students opportunities to develop leadership and initiative, and is in part responsible for the fine reputation for orderliness and cleanliness which Benson has created for itself. Students are elected to these organizations on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and general dependability. They are occasionally called upon to perform tasks indepen- dent of school duties as exemplihed by aid given in rationing sugar this spring. The combined membership in the three bodies totals approximately 135 this semester. A group of forty-three students who aid the office staff are office messengers and students on hall duty. Students who are appointed to positions must have good scholar- ship and citizenship and be exceptionally dependable and alert. Seniors are given prefer- ence. Miss Ada Morgan is director. ROTC This year, more than ever before, ROTC has been an important factor in preparing and equipping the nation with fighting men. The course studied is valuable to the boys when they enter active service in the armed forces. The name implies just what the letters stand for, that is, Reserve Officers Training Corps. The men in the battalion are taught to become leaders of men not only in military life but also in civilian life. Having earned honor unit ratings in the last two years, the Benson High ROTC battalion is striving to earn this recognition for the third time in its sixth year. The battalions social event, the ROTC Military Ball, was held at Peony Park on March 20. Clifford Walstrom followed in his brother Roberts footsteps when he was pro- moted to lieutenant colonel, battalion commander. Stanley Stepanek was named major. Newly commissioned captains were: Albert Beyer, jack Dindinger, john W. Petersen, Donald Honig, and Clyde Bohrer. The four new officers were second lieutenants, William Beebe, Robert Lawrence, Harold Ward, and Andrew Drinnin. Several special honors were awarded during the evening. Braids were presented to each member of the crack squad. john Egbert received a medal as best all-around cadet. Donald Swenholt was picked as the best junior cadet and was also presented with a medal. Miss May Leach, Miss Ella Anderson, and Mrs. Grace Smith assisted in training the officers and their ladies for the grand march. Sergeant Roy Lewis is the new D.E.M L. this year. A separate unit of the ROTC, the Crack Squad is under the direction of Thomas McCarville. The squad has been fortunate this year to receive new uniforms, blue blouses with white trousers. The 1942 banquet, the second of its kind, was on May 20. Each company, including the band, put on a skit that was judged by the guests of honor. The sergeant instructors from other Omaha high schools presented the prize. To enable ROTC boys to prepare for Federal inspection, early morning parades were held regularly on Wednesday and Friday morning, rain or shine. The ROTC oflice was remodeled by the battalion range officer, Albert Beyer, who put up venetian blinds, painted the floor, and built new supply racks for the iirst sergeants of the companies. The awards to the rille team, best cadets, and best squad were given at this time. The company that won the excellence banner the most times throughout the semester was recognized. Lieutenant Colonel Clifford Walstrcmm inaugurated a new plan for officer-of-the-day. Three of Coach Ross' men also won positions on the Intercity first team. They were Ray Borg, Stanley Stepanek, and Malcolm Watkins. Watkins also won a position as tackle on the All-State first team and Stepanek was placed as fullback on the second team.
