Activities and Ciubs The varied extra-curricular activities at Benson High School offer students opportunities to do advanced work and to obtain more pleasure from the subjects and hobbies in which they are most interested. Various departments in the school are represented in the extra-curricular program. Besides the Student Council, publications, R.O.T.C., sports, vocal and instrumental music, there are language, science, mathematics and history clubs fo meet students' interests. Interest in activities did not wane when many of them had to be discon- tinued in April, 1938. At the start of the fall semester when reorganization began more students than ever before registered for these activities. foams I' r 315 in 12 its 'W isis If CQ 4 S Ml QQ f Lg ,T iv Jrdfiy R if 'H QM? Every day Student Council members are on hall duty before school, between periods and after school. Besides taking care of the cafeteria and lunch- rooms members also assist in the library. It is stressed that Student Council members are not to act as police ollicers but as guides for other students. Members of the Council are elected by home rooms while committee workers are appointed by the sponsors, Miss Caroline Gurney and Miss Eva Jones. Officers of the Council are Grace She-pherd,presidentg Bernard Fruhwirth, vice president, jim McGafiin, prosecuting attorney, and Clara jane Clark, secretary. JUNIOR RED CROSS A first-aid course and a penny drive to furnish additional magazines for the library were the more important accomplishments of the junior Red Cross this year. Miss Grace jelinek and Miss Grace Matous are sponsors. A jitney show raised funds to send a delegate to the national convention in Washington, D. C. Mr. john Speedie was superintendent in the building at Sixtieth and Maple streets. In 1911, while Miss Margaret Fedde was still principal, the eleventh and twelfth grades were added. Miss Mary McNamara became principal in September, 1911. In 1912 the first athletic teams were organized, and the Orpheus club, an organization which produced all school operettas for many years, was established. Nineteen hundred-thirteen was a big year when the first four-year class to graduate from Benson High School consisted of eight members. Membership in the North-Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools was obtained in 1914 when the high school was transferred to the Benson West building, Sixty-sixth and Maple streets. In 1918 Benson became a part of the Omaha school system, then headed by Mr. J. H. Beveridge. The basketball team made its first showing in 1920, when it won the Nebraska State High School trophy, Class E. The Benson chapter of Girl Reserves was organized with about 15 members. The Parent-Teacher Association also held its first meeting with a membership of 120. Budding journalists of the various English classes published the first Benson High School newspaper, The Pepogmph, a mimeographed sheet, in 1925. In state athletic meets, Benson moved to Class D, and in city basketball, to Class B. The ground was broken for a new building with capacity for 800, March 4, 1926. On December 17, students and teachers entered the new pillars of learning at Fifty-second and Maple streets. In athletics, Benson was steadily climbing, and moved to Class C in state basketball that year. The formal opening of Benson High School was held in 1927. The first activities stamps were sold at five cents eachg Student Council was organized, and the physical education department gave its first program. The Whole Town't Talking, a three-act play, was given in connection with activities by the junior and senior classes. Honor Day was first held in 1928. Golfers became prominent when they won the Interstate meet and the trophy for the third consecutive year. The Benton High Newt received a first-class honor rating in its first inter-scholastic contest. First entrance to the district and state music contests was made in 1950. Lelaioala was the operetta that year, and Mr. Pim Pnttet By, the senior play. Briar Roie was the operetta, and musical talent had become so outstanding as to warrant a spring concert, now an annual affair. Tracksters won the city title, while the tennis and golf teams won state titles. Debaters again took the spotlight in 1932 by winning the Missouri Valley tournament cup. The Gooxe Hangf High was the senior play. Benson songsters won first place in the state music contest after winning high honors in the district meet. First-class rating was given the Benfon High Newr by the American Newspaper Critical Service. The senior play was Min Lala Beit. In 1953 the Benson chapter of the junior Red Cross was organized, as was the Euclid club, an organization for mathematics students. The operetta was The Dahe of Volenafam and the plays Daley and Tiger H oaxe were presented by seniors. Interstate titles in track and golf were won by Bunny athletes in 1934. The Xenophon club was formed that year by Mrs. E, Pearle Scriven. Seniors gave Shidding as their play. The Simzmoning of Everyman was the outstanding performance of 1955. The Prince of Pilfen was the operetta. Debaters again won first place, this time in the Missouri Valley Debate League. Five hundred students and nineteen teachers participated in the gigantic Gym Revue at the Ak-Sar-Ben coliseum. The Road to Yerterafay was the June senior play. First place in City tennis doubles was won. Guidance, under the direction of Miss Grace Jelinek, was offered as a one-semester course. Ace-footballers won for Benson the Interstate and Intercity titles. The senior play was Tommy. The first Victor Herbert operetta to be presented at Benson was Naughty Marietta, which proved an outstanding success in 1936. That year the girls' debate team won first place in the Midland Debate tourney. In the fall of 1936 the R.O.T.C. held its first classes. Gaexr Again was the senior play. The new stadium was dedicated by Mr. Elwood Pratt, president of the Benson Boosters club. The second Victor Herbert operetta, The Rea Mill, was presented by the music de- partment in January, 1937. The Production Staii' was organized by Mrs. Anna Cass, to manage the necessary behind-the-scenes work, such as prompting, make-up, properties, and business management. Benson's first Military Ball was held at the Central club in April. The june class presented a comedy, Balmy Dayf, as its play. The state debate tournament was won for the second successive year by Benson, giving the school perma- nent possession of the trophy. The Eyef of Tlaloc, a mystery, was presented by the January class. The Bunnies won Interstate football championship that year. Sweezheartf, the third Victor Herbert operetta to be given at Benson, was presented in 1958. The second annual Military Ball was held at the Central club ballroom in February, 1958. Bunnies won the Intercity and Interstate titles for basketball that season. The Fool, a serious drama, was given in the spring. The most recent step in the progress of Benson High School was the consolidation with Benson High of its next door neighbor, Monroe junior High and Elementary School, announced April 15, 1959. The consolidation will go into efiect in September, 1959. Miss Mary McNamara, Benson High principal, will become principal of both schools with Mr. J. Arthur Nelson, assistant principal in charge of Monroe. On April 19, 1939, Miss Grace Matous, instructor in the commercial department, died after an illness of two months following an attack of flu. Miss McNamara said of Miss Matous, She was kind and generous and frequently gave her individual check for welfare work among the students at Benson High School. Miss Matous was a fine Christian char- acter and an excellent teacher, especially understanding freshmen and their problems. Her death brings a real loss to Omaha's educational system. 1.3-1: rljez' .vii , .5 Q' , ' f 9,1553-a l , ,- . .h V ,Ki ., .Q qi 'C 91477 'wif I..
