She was a special friend, no one can take her place. She filled our lives with happiness, leaving now an empty space. She’s now our guardian angel, forever at our side She’ll always be there to talk to. in her we can confide. She entered the land of eternity as she was chose to rest. She’ll always live within our hearts, for with her our lives were blest. We should not go on through sorrow, for now the Lord’s her company. But we can rejoice in our prayers, within us she’ll live eternally. We’ll see her smile in every rainbow, hear her voice in every dream. Feel her presence in the warming sun. she’s still with us. so it will seem. We think of all the times we shared, as we look back through the years Remembering all those precious moments, as our eyes fill with tears. If only we could’ve said good-bye. before she went away And share our last few words together, we’d have a lot to say. We’d sit and reminisce for hours, we'd laugh at times, then cry. Knowing it would be the last time, we’d talk before she’d die. The word “death’’ seems so hard to say. yet harder to understand. How could someone as special as her be taken from our hands? The sun will never shine as bright, the day will seem so long. We’d think our life is over now. but here we would be wrong. For we'd have to go on living and face reality. This is what she’d want, for it was meant to be. UNDERCLASSMEN Juniors Anderson, Tim Ascheman, Scott Ascheman. Terry Ascheman. Tom Ascheman. Tony Bakke. Alice Beam. Troy Benoit. Christine Berens. I came to Benson on August 15, 1986, but I was in the USA on August 11, 1986. I am with the AFS organi- zation and I am staying with the Laycock family. I like it here, Benson is a nice place. I am in choir and I enjoy that. I came here because I wanted to live in another culture and country, to make new friends, to meet a lot of people, and to learn English. My name is Ben Pearson. I am an Australian ex- change student on an AFS Scholarship Program. I am here on a corporate scholarship through a company called Mayne Nickless, who have subsidiaries in Seattle and Winnipeg. I am 19 years of age and used to live in Sydney. This is the largest city in Australia (3.5 million). I graduated from high school last October, but because I applied to be an exchange student in my last year of school, I was accepted. I enjoy all sports: rugby, surfing, and cricket. I have enjoyed playing football here, and am looking forward to wrestling and baseball. I am really enjoying my stay so far and am glad to have been accepted by all my fellow students. I really want to thank the populous of the local area for making me so welcome and I hope I live up to all expectations. The name my parents gave me is Vemund Haa- gensen and I am from Norway. My hometown, Steinkjer is about the size of Willmar and it is near a pretty big city called Trondheim. I arrived here August 6, and I was really excited to see how my family was. They have been nice from the beginning and I’m really pleased that they be- came my family. I took this year to get away from Norway, to see something new, and maybe to get away from the Norwegian school too. I went out for football and it was a new experience for me. I liked the coaches, the players, and the atmosphere around every game. I think when I return to Norway I will miss this place. My name is Sergio Gonzalez. I’m from Monterrey, Mexico. I arrived here on August 9, 1986. I came independent to any exchange program. I am living in DeGraff with Joe and Carol Simmonds who are the same people that my brother, Rick, came to live with three years ago. They are a really nice family who have made me feel at home and I enjoy staying with them. I decided to come to the United States to have a different and new experience, to meet a lot of friends, to live with another family and to enjoy the whole school year. I am very fortunate to be able to spend one year in the United States. I have enjoyed going to school in Benson, all the people here are real friendly. I want to thank all the teachers for helping me, all my classmates who have given me their great friendship, because of this I was able to overcome the little problems when I first came. This year has been very important to my life, a year that I will always remember. 48 Boys Girls State This summer from June 8 to June 141 attended the American Legion’s Minnesota Boys State program. The program was again set on the Gustavus Adol- phus campus in St. Peter. This year 470 seniors-to- be attended. The program provided a very detailed working mo- del of government from the city to the county to the state level. At Boys State you get out what you put into it. With a little incentive you learn a great deal. Also available for our free time were the various sports activities. Available were softball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, racaquetball, swimming, and more. Perhaps the best aspect of Boys State was being able to meet new people and make new friends. Dealing with the wide range of people found at Boys State gives a good experience for life beyond high school. Boys State was a week I'll not forget. I can only thank the Benson American Legion and the Wom- en’s Auxiliary for allowing me to attend the 1986 Boys State. During June of 1986, I was privileged to attend the fortieth annual Girls State at the College of St. Cath- erine’s. On Sunday I arrived on campus with 475 other girls, and we each became a citizen of a city. During the week, we learned how local, county, and state governments are run. This gave us the opportunity to run for and hold offices. One of the highlights of the week was going to the state capitol and being able to sit in the Senate Chambers as a senator. It was a great opportunity to get to know many other girls and make new friends. I would like to thank the American Legion Auxiliary and Benson High School for giving me this great opportunity. Wolf Tennis Team Has A Good Season The Benson Braves Tennis Team had a good season and had many close matches in which they came up short. The Braves had a 2-4 record in the West-Central Conference this year. In Region team competition the Braves were eliminated by Madison. All the Benson tennis players were defeated by players advancing to State competition, in individual compe- tition. The Braves netters had three new comers this year. Heidi Kjos, a sophmore transfer from Hutchinson, and two juniors, Alice Bakke and Andrea Hamann. It was a memorable year for the netters because it was Coach Rick Willhite’s last season for coaching tennis. 70 Cross Country Team to Return Letter Winners The 1986 cross country season had its ups and downs. On the up side, everyone “worked hard” and had a lot of fun. The team had six boys and three girls. Also on the plus side, all members were underclassmen, so hopefully, next year the cross country team will be successful. Basketball FRONT ROW: K. Payne, manager. A. Rode, manager. W.
