The week started off when the unknown royalty walked into school to find their pajamas hanging in the study hall windows. There were many fun activities during the week, such as the royalty banana eating contest, a tug-o-war. life- saver pass, the powder puff game between the juniors and seniors, with the game ending in a tie. This year a few new dress days were added to our week such as vacation day. dress crazy, clash day. then the usual dress-upday and school spirit day. Thursday night 's coronation started out as the M.C. 's Cari Knutson and Tony Prince Strand bopped into the auditorium. The banner boys were Tony Hilleren and Kim Erdman-. crown bearers were Angela Ziels- dorf and James O'Leary. Various skits entertained us during the evening with the Benson Body Wave breakdancers winning. The coronation ended with the crowning of Liz Blasey and Pete Spates as the 1984 King and Queen. The week was highlighted by the volleyball and football games. Unfortunately, the volleyball team was defeated, but our football team won 17-7 over the Hew London Spicer wildcats. 79 1984 Homecoming Royalty Miss Becky Buckner Mr. Wayne Newton Miss Sue Peterson Mr. Dan Franzmeier Queen Liz Blasey Miss Charlene Cain Mr. Sean Bolduc 80 Miss Melanie Rode Mr. Ed Friedlein luieign Lxuunye Jiuuems Seated: Lina Carvajal. Advisor. Mrs. Nelson Girl's Sidle is learning about our form of govern- ment at the local, county and state levels by actually participating in and organizing the various levels and branches of government as found in Minnesota. Each girl is a citizen of a city. We began the week by setting up our city government and electing our officials. We campaigned, elected, organized, and carried on the business of government. We held mock political conventions and caucused through the state conventions. Some highlights of the week are filing for office, campaigning, the election and inauguration of the Girl's State Governor and State Officials, and our legislative sessions held at the Minnesota State Capi- tol in the House and Senate Chambers. When I left on Saturday morning. I left with a better understanding of my government and many, many friends whom I will remember all my life. I want to sincerely thank the American Legion La- dies Auxiliary for giving me the honor of attending Girl’s State 1984. Roy 's State is conducted annually by the American Legion in every state in the union as a part of their Americanism program. Thousands of young men like myself participate. I attended Boy’s State on June tenth to the six- teenth at Gustavus AlolphusCollege in St. Peter. Min- nesota. The primary objective of Boy s State is to give you actual experiences in the way local, county, and state governments function. And by doing so. hope- fully to create interest and desire to practice sound government in your everyday life. Throughout the week we listened to many speakers covering the var- ious areas of government. There was also a chance to take part in sports such as softball, basketball, volley- ball. table tennis, and tennis. It is truly a rewarding experience and I would like to thank the American Legion for allowing me to partici- pate. Gopher’s Whistle Front Row.- K. Nemmers. K. Olson. M. O 'Leary. L. Gross- man. M.
